Depends what information you need. If it's for accommodation I would stay in a nearby town. Newport is small and the hotels get expensive that weekend. All you need to know is it's a very beautiful city. If you have a day before or after the festival I'd recommend taking a harbor cruise. As for the festival itself. There's no need to stress. It's a relatively small and very friendly festival. When the schedule comes out figure out who you want to see. I'd arrive a bit early. A lot of people bring a low back lawn chair, picnic blanket and snacks and set up base in front of main stage. Space near the stage fills up right away when gates open. Don't run but walk fast if you want one. There is a designated area in front of stage for dancing and the crowd. You can go to other stages as you wish and come back. The first year I spent a lot of time at the main stage. It overlooks beautiful Newport Harbor. This year I may not bring a chair and blanket at all. I tend to bounce around a lot and last year spent almost no time at it. There are food vendors anyway. You can bring a refillable water container. There are water refill stations. The main stage is outside a big old civil war fort. If you walk left facing main stage you will soon see smaller stages. One on right is in a room in the fort. The museum stage. Sometimes big stars show up there. The next is the Harbor stage where smaller acts play. After that go though a tunnel and see the Quad stage. It's inside the fort and is my favorite. It's a huge tent. It get big acts or quickly rising acts. It's a more intimate venue and you can't beat it if it's very hot out as its covered. If you like beer there are beer gardens. You need a wrist band and line can be long for that when it opens. Later it's fine. Have fun.
A few questions - is it all standing at all the stages? or are some sitting? - what sort of temperature should we expect? - can you come in and out? - what's the food like? (here downunder I started and run the countries first food truck festival) - what sort of distance between stages? can you hop between easily?
Love any comments from anyone about how to make the most this bucket list experience......
-The main stage has a designated standing area up front, but behind that is where people set up chairs/blankets, both of the other real stages and the Museum stage are seated, although you can stand around the edges, you just won't be under the tent. Getting a seat for a bigger name at the Quad stage can be something of a waiting game, especially if you want spot closer to the front.
-Temp could really range anywhere from 70º-90º (F), but I think around 80-85 is usual, sometimes with a nice breeze from the ocean depending on where you are. But it also seems like there's always one day where we get some amount of rain and things cool down. Weather in the northeast has been getting more and more unpredictable over the last couple years.
-I think you can go in and out to your car and back or whatever (may be wrong on that) but otherwise there's no real reason to leave. There's no way you're walking to and from downtown Newport or anything during the festival.
-Food's decent, although don't expect anything too incredible. There are a handful of proper food trucks around the fest, mostly by the main stage, and then a couple more traditional food vendors (pizza, gyro, sausage and peppers, etc.). You can also bring in your own food if that's something your into. I think I've brought a sandwich at least one day every year I've been.
-Stages are very easy/quick to get between. They fixed one of the bad traffic areas last year. I think the Fort Stage (main) to the Quad is like a 3-5 minute walk, and the Harbor and Museum are in between those two.
my dad brought me up on folk, so Prine for sure (he is so jealous, suspect he might try to fit in the suitcase), avett's never disappoint when ive seen in past, but really more excited about the newish young bands like joseph, wild reeds, glasby, big thief, salami.... really it will all be good....so aside from stage selection just excited about it all
off to see Mountain Goats tonight, guessing now the cubs have won, you can't ask for that song anymore
A few questions - is it all standing at all the stages? or are some sitting? The Fort stage is the biggest and overlooks Newport Harbor. Room is reserved in front for standing/dancing and behind that there are people on blankets and low-back chairs for those who just want to chill. There is no cover from the elements. The Quad stage is the next biggest and is within the walls of the fort. It has a roof but is open air with hundreds of folding chairs set up under the roof- first come first served for chairs but people are crowded all around. The sound is great pretty much everywhere there because of the stone walls of the Quad are great acoustics. The Harbor stage is smaller and under a roof with dozens of chairs and is halfway between the Fort and Quad stages - again chairs are first come first served. Some acts create quite a crowd and it spills out pretty far (Hozier and Shaky Graves caused quite a traffic jam there). The Museum stage is indoors and holds about a hundred or so people. Smaller acts, themed shows and special appearances happen there and it's easy to get shut out as they will limit entrance once it fills up. People will hang outside and wait for somebody to leave so they can get in. - what sort of temperature should we expect? Anywhere from 65-100 (please do your own Celsius conversion Most likely it will be in the 80's but it hits the 90's here in July pretty often. Late day thunderstorms are not uncommon. - can you come in and out? You can leave and return the festival area (get wristbanded) but I don't think you can leave with your car and return unless you had an additional parking pass. Usually it's about a 20-25 minute walk back to your car from the festival area if you needed to get something from it. - what's the food like? (here downunder I started and run the countries first food truck festival) Lots of food trucks and snacky foods for sale. You can bring in small coolers with food but no booze. Beer/wine can be purchased (~$7-8) but must be consumed in the areas it's sold. There are two beer/wine areas - one by the Quad stage and one by the Fort stage. You can listen to the music from the drinking areas. There are screens at the Quad and Fort. - what sort of distance between stages? can you hop between easily? You can easily hop between Fort and Quad in 5-10 minutes. The Harbor stage is halfway between the two. Sound bleed is not an issue at NFF. The fort is a natural sound barrier.
Love any comments from anyone about how to make the most this bucket list experience..... It sounds like you're already well on your way to making this a bucket list experience. Boston is awesome all by itself.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
It's an homage to Berklee -- a great music school for the talented (and some who just have money). Yhe Jones Family Singers raised the Harbor stage a mile high a few years back. Perhaps they are too powerhouse and revivalist for a lazy Sunday morning, but would prefer to see them one year and have Berklee open the Jazz Fest.
