LCD or Gorillaz w 2 shit-the-bed HL is fine with me. Kendrick and Arcade Fire w 1 shit-the-bed HL. Kanye West seems like a strong play for this.
So who raises to the top as HL status? (based off future album drops) -Future seems to be the big hip hop rise to the top
-Thirty Seconds to Mars
-Tyler, The Creator (maybe in 2019)
-The 1975 - ugh
-Vampire Weekend - also ugh but they seem like a good indie/alt fit
-Queens of the Stone, at first seem unlikely for this type of fest, but it feels like their next album is gaining momentum, and with Mark Ronson producing, everything shifts in a more dance/pop direction.
-St Vincent - if this next album gets big but she is hitting up small venues on the current tour
-Yeah Yeah Yeahs - are a reach but if they crush a new album maybe? They are headlining two others
-Iggy Azalea - New album, pretty much the worst possible scenario headliner
-Marilyn Manson - so Im going with least likely headliner but Trump is president so stranger things have happened.
And unless she has a total reinvention of herself, Iggy Azelea is never going to headline. She is margianally less relevant now than she was a few years back
Really hoping that I get something enjoyable here. My fest schedule next year is going to be way lighter than the past few years and this is one the GF and I both would like to do. I may be down to just this and Peach next year.
1/17 Spafford 2/7 Greensky Bluegrass 3/17 Cool Cool Cool 3/28 Ekoostik Hookah 7/10 Jason Mraz 7/11 Chris Stapleton 7/12 Red Hot Chili Peppers 7/13 Buffalo Ska Fest
And unless she has a total reinvention of herself, Iggy Azelea is never going to headline. She is margianally less relevant now than she was a few years back
I'm just setting the bar as low as physically and emotionally possible with Iggy.

That's the right spirit. People who like Hangout have a tendency to WAY overhype what it is. It's a teeny-bopper festival for the 16-22 set now. It's corporate and has no edge whatsoever. And the lineups are overrated with a random exception here and there. Outside of a miracle lineup, I'm done with Hangout as are all 3 of my kids. I might go back to Baldwin County to ride the roller coaster at OWA at some point. But otherwise when in South Alabama, I'll stay closer to Mobile.

no no no their lineup was comparable to most other fests in its ballpark. + there's the beach.
i mean booking a place to stay for acl (thursday-monday) is a bundle more expensive then hangouts beach condo (tuesday-tuesday) and we're on the beach steps from the entrance of the fest.

'The bottom was too fuckin crowded Just like a crab in a barrel I fought to get out if it But they wouldn't allow it And still i got out and go' Killer Mike
I'm sure being on the beach enhances the hangout experience, but even with Roo's lineups being trash... hangout's lineups are next level trash. Worst in the country tulips trash.

lawl. we cant all book kesha and t pain.
don't get me wrong. Firefly, and Sasquatch were right there with you, I just don't see how anybody could say this and Roo were neck and neck. Roo has gone downhill for sure. But this has completely changed for the worse (lineup wise)
true Hangout isnt much different then most lineups anymore, for the last 3 years its been on par with Roo for the part. Not that thats saying much
C'mon man. Not a chance. Not even isolated to like 2 major stages vs.
Obviously Roo isn't want it was, but that's an incredibly optimistic opinion of hangout. That's alright though. I'm not saying all of you all are deluded. I have had fun there. But when a lineup is too teeny-bopper for my 21 year old daughter, I think that says all that needs to be said about it.

Unless someone is really into popular or "in" shit at the time, you are 100% right. And it's weird because it used to be so varied up. And what's weirder is that Goldenvoice (despite having some festivals with some really cool and diverse lineups) has basically orchestrated it to be a beach party for pop fans.

I love the beach and staying out tIL 2am so it really gets a big slant. Ne215 and I grew up going down to the beach n party g our asses off. But yeah, it's really got shit the bed. Adding Pheonix to replace Frank really helped the value.
sorry but take away U2 and the superjams and Roo has a generic run of the mill basic multi genre fest just like this and the majority of the multi genre fests, Roo is the same fest that booked Dead and Co and then proceeded to book Halsey 11th. im not trying to dump on Roo just outside of Coachella theyre supposed to be the standard. Roo, Lolla, ACL, etc all have been booking the majority of the same acts that have run through hangout the past 3 years.

I agree. Hangout was always muli genre but it now skews more towards EDM and Pop and less towards Jam, Folk. Coachella boast a great line up because it can. The only reason I dont go is it +100k volume and expensive as hell. Roo used to have line ups that had me contemplating going but the past 2 years have been very meh.

Hangout is way more pop man. There's plenty of crossover between festivals in the corporate festival era. But there is zero edge. Zero. Sigur Ros was an anomaly on the lineup this year. Otherwise look at the Top 10:
Mumford & Sons
Twenty One Pilots
Frank Ocean
Chance the Rapper
Major Lazer
Weezer
DJ Snake
MGMT
Sigur Ros
Marshmello
^^^
When you get to the bottom it's all mostly pop too. No other major festival is catering to high school girls or casual music fans at best more than Hangout. There are none. There might be other popular acts on other lineups, but probably TV on the Radio was the last somewhat edgy thing Hangout did. I'm not even saying all the Top 10 sucks. It's just mostly pop. l Let's look at last year:
1) The Weeknd
2) Calvin Harris
3) Florence & The Machine
4) Alabama Shakes
5) Ellie Goulding
6) Panic! at the Disco
7) Lenny Kravitz
8) Flume
9) Haim
10) Cage
Again, I'm not hating on it completely and actually dig the hell out of a couple of those acts. But keep going down. What was actually cool in the lower card? The Wailers, Vince Staples, Pepper, Raury and Stick Figure. There were far less of those types of acts (not that they're all the same but not super pop) in 2017.
Handwriting is on the wall. If someone wants to go there, by all means do it. Spend that money and have a ball. But that's not going to change what this is.

I'm perplexed how this thread is convinced Frank is a bland pop act. I get not liking his music but he is far from formulaic or boring. Honestly right now, the artist I would compare him to most is James Blake

Aside from U2, these both look pop and EDM heavy.
They are. But look at the rest of the card. NOTE: I realize Bonnaroo has triple the number of acts. And I'm not defending it. I blew it off last year. But if you couldn't find a better schedule on Friday-Saturday-Sunday at Bonnaroo than Hangout, I don't really know what to say because I wasn't looking to fight about it. haha

If there's one thing I probably dislike more than Marshmello is modern era R&B Crooners. I don't like them. I haven't liked any of them since the Whitney Houston era of the mid 1980's. I never will. It's not me. It does nothing for me. And it's way song format-y and not musically adventurous at all (though I realize lyrically he is better than average with expressing his emotions and ideas). I grew up in a jazz world, so 4x4 sing along stuff even with some occasional cool rap and sometimes interesting sound mixes will do nothing for me. I'm not hating on him or his fans. It's not for me. Not even a little.

IDK call me crazy but i dont seem to recall acts like Yeah yeah yeah, bloody beetroots live, Outkast, Beck, public enemy, moon taxi rage sets, modest mouse, lenny kravitz, miike snow, HEALTH, sigur ros, dillon francis, shaggy, lupe w/ umph, jack U, beck, QOTSA, migos, dj jazzy jeff, coheed, wolfmother at bonnaroo in the past 6 years... we get some, they get some its all perspective... not sure how hangout is edm/pop fest but roo isnt? Surley only b/c they have a larger lineup. I mean look at 2017, 18 acts shared or played at hangout in 2016 out of the first 33 listed. i mean we can all agree that we attend multiple fests a year and from my view they are all the same basically except for the lineups. with hangout the lineup and atmosphere inside and outside the fest are totally unique to their location. to me the only draw of bonnaroo is the late night scene.
if it all comes down to u2 then its like ive been saying for years...

You have to probably go back to 2012-14 which I don't think Live Nation was running or booking it yet. There's tons of great shit and more underground. There also was at Hangout. No more. While Bonnaroo does promote to youngsters now, it's still a little better than reaching for the low hanging fruit fans. It has often failed to deliver fully but there is really not much comparison. I mean seriously. You can find similar samples of HL and upper mid cards across most of the festivals. That goes for Hangout, Lolla, ACL, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Voodoo, Firefly, Gov Ball, etc. Hangout in 2016 decided they didn't need to take chances and made it a high school and college beach party. That's okay if that's good enough for you. It's not for me. So I quit going. But I'd still like them to reconsider their music fans over their pop and scene fans and throw some bones our way. Because I'm not against it. I'm just against what it has become musically. I'm not against younger shit with an edge. I go to Buku, and I see plenty of modern shit as you know. But I guess that brings me back to a point a few posts back which was that people who dig the fuck out of Hangout overrate it for beach and vacation considerations. I feel like I rate it appropriately for what I like to see live, so I quit supporting it after 4 years. They aren't going to go broke without me. So I'm sure they don't care.

Im just bored n tossing around comparison charts. I like discussing this shit but for some people on the boars (not you) they get really bent out of shape over this. It really doesn't matter. I had a great time last year at hangout and found just enough music to justify the trip.
My TlDr is that when it comes to fests I want to go, Hangout gets a lot of +1's due to being on the beach. It was definitely one of the weakest line ups. Roo was stronger by nature of it being Roo but it def is also going in a more mainstream direction with slight recovery over last year going all in with U2. If Hangout was on some farm, ranch, forest, a stadium parking lot or better yet, a POST OFFICE, I wouldn't have gone.
It is interesting that Chance, Major Lazer and nearly Mashmello were in the same slots. Bonaroo reminds me more of Firefly with just a shit ton of currently relevant indie, hip hop, edm, ect rather than booking anythign eclectic anymore besides U2 and its Jam presence is diminishing much like Hangout in 2014.
Destination and imaginitive locations are helping fests differentiate themselves. MiddleLands being held in a Rennaisance Faire sounded like a huge success. Friends boasted so much about how much they liked it that I was considering it in 2018. Unfortunately, it won'd be returning if it weren't for permit issues. Sound on Sound is getting its restart with the same idea had a modest turn out and is looking at an even better turnout this year thus far. Day4Night's POST OFFICE adventure crushed in my opinion even while a god damn sewer line busted and was literally streaming down the sidewalk. Hopefully, for the consumer sake, these trends continue.
I hear you and I know where you're at on that. And I'm glad you say that the +1s come along with the considerations. That's honest and legit even though much of the lineup has been lackluster over the last few years. Fair enough.

Using a tried and tested 5-star ranking system, Id give: 2017 Hangout 2.0 - 2.5 (w Phoenix replacing Frank) 2016 "" (Flo, Weeknd, CH) 3.0 - 3.5 2015 "" (Foo, Beck, ZBB) - 4.0 2014 "" (Outkast, Killers, Black Keys) was def a 4.0 - 4.5 2013 "" (Stevie, KoL, TP) was a 3.5 - 4.0
Waka in 2015 was probably a 3.5 - 4.0 in general, but for my tastes it was 4.5 - 5.0. I think Wayhome gets the 1.0 for this year. FYF and Coachella get 5.0s (im sure there were a couple other good ones but I forget.
Well that was a climb up the mountain and back. Pilgramage Tix in the mail. Lockn this weekend...streaming esteban? Hangouts 2011-2013 and 2017 are my favorites. 50% about hanging out with friends or family, 25% hanging with those folks on and at the beach a good drive to reach. About 7 one hour albums or one fun playlist. 25% music. Since I'm good with guitar whenever and wherever, if Hangout festival has some jammy, classic, bluesy, folky, or rock it is gravy. Hangout = annualbeach vacation + friends + music. Bonnaroo = friends + music + survival.

Yeah. It's on YouTube. Go to the lockn channel and then they are subscribed to Relix so go to their channel and it's there. I'll go grab a link. Umphrey's first set is on now but the sound on the webcast is fd up. It'll get fixed but it's supposed to go tonight and then all day tomorrow Saturday and Sunday from like 10:00am to 1am.
