Fair critiques all around. I was more just curious as to why. I had heard some people saying that the reason they didn't feel engaged is because it doesn't have a "concept" and I kind of think that's whack. But I can just see it not immediately grabbing the listener's attention.
I think the more I listen to it the more I pick out moments I'm really digging.

I'm 6 or 7 listens in and I had about the same opinions as you on my first couple listens. Read about the story he tells at the end of the album on duckworth and that helps clairify things and slowly it falls into place. Still can't say how it compares to his earlier albums, but definitely a great record

So is there any chance DAMN. doesn't win?? It's early... but probably my AOTY so far. If he does release another album (which I don't think he will) that'll pretty much lock it in as best of 2017.
Joey was very good but ultimately a bit empty for me. Arca was pretty good too but a bit too niche for me. Gonna wait for Gorillaz before locking a vote in but yeah Kendrick has done it again.
Just like all his albums, the deeper you dive into it, the more you find. I'm just now getting to the Duckworth lyrics and the album came full circle on me. The man is a genius.
As much as I love Kendrick, I also love FJM for different reasons. I'm going to have to do some soul-searching to decide who to vote for this month. And if it comes down to a tie for me, I'll go FJM because I know Kendrick will have over 15 votes already.
Maybe it's because the radio-pandered production is trite and lackluster. Maybe it's because I just don't "get" my generation's understanding what classifies as "good rap." Maybe this makes me seem like an asshole.
I'm just really not interested in this Kendrick album and it's bumming me out how overwhelmingly praised it is from every direction.

You're not alone, I wasn't blown away either. The songs I really enjoy have already made it into my regular rotation though.
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air

I think that's an unfair way to describe the production, but I could understand why someone who really liked TPAB doesn't like this as much. For me, it hits all the right spots. Shifting rhythms and infectious melodies, insightful subject matter, intense mood and emotion. It's all there.
I think Kendrick may have put together the best 3-album run of any artist ever, or at least close to it (not counting untitled unmastered). For me it comes down to the tone and the attitude of this and GKMC inspiring me more than TPAB.

I also much prefer DAMN to TPAB which was such a slog to get through. The continuous retelling of "I remember you was conflicted...", the Tupac convo, the race issues that I admittedly may not feel as deeply because of the color of my skin. I recognize that the album is good, but I'll never be in a hurry to put it on. I think Damn is extremely varied and more fun. Being more accessible than TPAB doesn't make it radio-pandered.

You know that Pink Floyd put out DSotM > WYWH > Animals > The Wall...... right?
Like, I LOVE kendrick, but this is not the best 3 album run ever, especially considering that you're acting like untitled unmastered didn't happen.
