This might be a month where I have less than ten albums that I even like, let alone ten to put into a top ten.
I was very wrong when I said this four days ago. There is a lot to like about this month.
My current recommendation list: Pond (my current front runner), Perfume Genius, Sinjin Hawke, Do Make Say Think, Mac DeMarco, Slowdive, Juana Molina, PWR BTTM, Nick Hakim, Jlin, Land of Talk, Afghan Whigs, !!!, Jane Weaver, and (Sandy) Alex G.
Pond is a perfect combination of Tame Impala (obviously) and MGMT. Nick Allbrook is a bad ass.
I've been trying to figure out what Perfume Genius reminds me of and I figured it out. With Grizzly Bear releasing new music this month I went back and listened to Chris Taylor's solo project Cant. His album Dreams Come True from 2010 is a better version of what I enjoy about Perfume Genius. If that album had come out in 2017 instead, I think it would've gotten a lot more recognition.
I'm pretty sure that since January, nothing has failed to match my expectations (set by the reactions of this board) as much as Alex G. Pretty unimpressed.

It's not the type of album that I normally listen to, and was about to turn it off the other day when it started to grab me. Think I've listened to the full thing 3 times now.
I can't quite place what I like about it.
Brick and Sportstar might be two of my favorite tracks on the album, and are so completely different. I love that they're placed next to each other on the album.
Likely won't get my AotM nod, but I'll be coming back to it and checking out the rest of his discography.
I felt like Brick was too out of place. Not in a way that makes me think it's super meaningful or symbolic, just out of place.
Horse > Brick > Sportstar is a great run of songs.
Not related to Alex G, but this comment makes me think of 1% and Never Created, Never Destroyed on Jlin. That 1-2 punch almost makes me want to vote for Jlin on its own.

I've really been enjoying Juana Molina the last few days. It's way more accessible than I thought it would be based on various reviews. Also her album art is awesome.
Sidebar, was Cosoco used in a movie/TV show/commerical/something recently? I swear I've heard it before checking out the album.

if covers of the month were a thing, i'd take that #1, with Afghan Whigs #2.
This thread needs more Jlin talk. I like the new Mountain Goats but nowhere near as much as Black Origami.
E: almost forgot to ask if you can vote for an album that is a "reimagining of songs" that an artist previously recorded. Not worried about this month but with that Jeff Tweedy solo record looming in June, I feel like I need to straighten that out now.
I'm not sure who started the notion that you can't just vote for whatever album, EP, live album, reimagining, mixtape, or whatever other recorded album is released in a month. Shouldn't the only criteria be that it came out in that particular month? If the best thing to come out that month is a live album of only cover songs, that's what I'm voting for.

Agreed, no reason to get super particular. This ain't the Grammys.
For this record in particular, it's solo versions of songs written for current and previous bands. I'm worried on that fact it turns it into "greatest hits" category.
It's not like it's gonna matter for me though, I'm sure. My vote will end up going to Lorde or Ride or Jefre Cantu-Ledesma anyways.
This month is a killer. Really digging Slowdive, Mac, Alex G, and Pond. Honestly don't know which I'd vote for. Not to mention I still need to check out Juana Molina, Jlin, and Aldous Harding.

If someone genuinely enjoyed a reissue or a greatest hits comp the most out of every release in a calendar month then I think they should be able to vote for it.

I feel like I got the ok to vote for the Oczy Mldy RSD "live" rearrangements thing.
At this point my list is down to Penguin Cafe, Wavves, and The Black Lips. I'm not sure what else is coming out this week, so there may yet be something else that jumps in the list.
