Oh boy. You guys are in for a treat with that new Downtown Boys album, next month.
I've still got some listen to do but it's gonna be a fight between Waxahatchee and Japanese Breakfast, I think. Everything Now is gonna have to be content with the no. 4 slot.
Coming from a place where I discussed outside this board that Lorde > Lana, before Roo.
I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I was at Santa Monica beach looking at the ocean and thinking about the future when I first listened to Lust for Life, but after the first listen I liked it more than Lorde for sure.
But after couple more listens, I got bored with most of the album, I believe it should've been much shorter.
I've enjoyed all the Arcade Fire singles, so I still think it has a shot at being a good album despite mixed early reviews. Tyler's album is decent. I'm not enjoying Lana Del Rey as much as her previous work, but it's also decent. I liked Avey Tare more than most people but I'm also an Animal Collective fan boy. Daphni was okay. I surprisingly enjoyed Declan McKenna more than I expected. Some that were really good finds for me have been Mura Masa, Mammut, Oh Wonder, and Childhood. Broken Social Scene is also a bright spot this month.
I still think Japanese Breakfast is my current leader, but it's still anyone's game.
I've only listened to the first few songs on Avey Tare's new one, but it didn't really do much for me. But honestly, Avey's solo work has never been my favorite. Absolutely love his AnCo songs, and love Panda Bear's solo stuff with all my heart. But his solo output just falls flat for me for some reason.

I can agree to this. Panda Bear's solo work, and Deakin's Sleep Cycle for that matter, are far and away better than Avey's solo work. That is not to take away from some of my favorite songs ever that he wrote and sang for Animal Collective. It's a nice album to put on in the background while at work or creating art yourself. I also like to nap while listening to music in headphones, and this works well for that, too haha

Down There is an immaculate album. Slasher Flicks was good but not great. This new album is really good.
Right now for me it's between Avey and Tyler. Quazarz in a close 2nd. Still waiting on Arcade Fire.

Broken Social Scene is sneaking its way into contention for my vote. The song "Gonna Get Better" is so damn good man

I'd be really interested in hearing an opinion of Hug of Thunder from someone new to Broken Social Scene. I love it and it will be my vote but I can't separate my experience with the album from my previous BSS obsession. I'm sure there are people who listened to this before, say, You Forgot It In People.

Before HoT, the only thing I really knew about them was 'Sweetest Kill' (which I like) and that Feist was in the band.
I thought the first few tracks were fine, but I wasn't really feeling it until the last half. I added Towers and Masons (fave from the album), Victim Lover, and Mouth Guards to my library after 1st listen, and Halfway Home and Gonna Get Better when the singles came out.
I like it, and I'm definitely more intrigued by them after seeing the Prima set and hearing this, but as far this month, it's just not going to beat out Tyler, Daphni, or Waxa for me.
*I like it more than Avery, Lana, Sheer Mag, Haim, probably put it in my 2nd tier with Boris, Prins Thomas, Toro, Japanese Breakfast, Art Feynman, still havent listened to all the Shabaz Palaces.

I'm very unfamiliar with BSS until listening to this album. I think the album is a lot of fun, poppy indie rock. It makes total sense that they're Canadian. You can just tell. But yeah, I may give some of their older stuff some listens because now I'm a fan.
I've already listened to "Gonna Get Better" about 7 times this morning.

Awesome you guys, thanks! I don't really think this is the best album to get someone hooked but it's a great overview of the Broken Social Scene ethos; lots of raw emotion, maxmimalist arrangements, catchy hooks and lots of energy.
If you're interested in more I think you should start from the beginning of their discography and listen through. You Forgot It In People is there critical masterpiece but I like the self-titled just as much. And I think It's All Gonna Break is probably the best representation of the band that I know.
And my favorite songs on this album are Halfway Home, Stay Happy, Hug Of Thunder, and Mouth Gaurds Of The Apocalypse. I definitely agree it finishes stronger than it starts.
