These super obscure AF lists are hilarious. How do you decide that DAMN. should land at 41? You choose to include it amongst album after album that no one outside of your office has heard, but determine it is just not quite as good as Karen Gwyer..
I decided I would check out Karen Gwyer to see if I could figure why she is just barely better than Kendrick and her album isn't on Spotify. So I skipped her and tried out Aaron Dilloway instead.
If you can make it through the whole thing without skipping around, congratulations on wasting your life. It's like background music to a snuff film. Try to listen to the first five tracks or so without VCR quality images of poorly pixelated gore appearing before your eyes. Arguably the best track on the album, "No Eye Sockets", sounds like it was recorded inside the brain of someone who gets drugged at a bar, with a solid four minutes of recorded bar sounds and conversations that subtly transition into the slightest of psychedelia. Don't get too excited because the next track, "Switch", is utter and complete fucking garbage of repetitive abrasive noises.
Bottom line, you should listen to this album if you plan on taking hallucinagens and want to end up in the fetal position crying. It's like what Aphex Twin must sound like to your mom.

I wasn't planning on listening to this but I'm now 1000x more interested thanks to this description

At least they have Tyler in the top twenty
The Wire is known to cover super obscure music on their magazine as well, so I'm not surprised that list has a lot of underground music. But I wouldn't include DAMN. if I was making that kind of list.
Having an interest in underground music, I tried their #1 & 3 (listened to #2 before) this morning, but I don't think they should be ranked that high. There are much better underground/experimental music released this year.

I once saw Dilloway play a washing machine for 45 minutes. It’s been over a decade and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.
I like this list more than The Quietus but god damn with Richard Dawson. I’m really starting to think it’s a me thing.

i've been trying to figure out Richard Dawson all year, still unsuccessful.

I was introduced to the ~art~ of "playing a washing machine" at Day for Night 2016.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Should be pointed out that record is pretty despondent and a horrible choice as a gateway to the genre. It also proves to me that The Wire continues to make lists for old white dudes.
Blanck Mass put out the noise album of the year and nowhere is that listed.
20. LCD Soundsystem, American Dream 19. Iron Chic, You Can’t Stay Here 18. The Horrors, V 17. Lorde, Melodrama 16. Charly Bliss, Guppy 15. Björk, Utopia 14. The National, Sleep Well Beast 13. Bell Witch, Mirror Reaper 12. Sampha, Process 11. Pile, A Hairshirt Of Purpose 10. Waxahatchee, Out In The Storm 9. Vince Staples, Big Fish Theory 8. Julien Baker, Turn Out The Lights 7. Fever Ray, Plunge 6. Priests, Nothing Feels Natural 5. SZA, CTRL 4. Sylvan Esso, What Now 3. The War On Drugs, A Deeper Understanding 2. St. Vincent, Masseduction 1. Kendrick Lamar, DAMN
A small gripe I have every year is that I really wish publications would stop using the word "Best" in these lists and switch to the much more appropriate "Favorite." If they're compiling votes from different writers who all likely grade and evaluate music differently how can they possibly have a means of determining objective quality?
EDIT: Another big factor, at least for me, is seeing an artist live. Fleet Foxes' album would've ended up on my list regardless, but will almost definitely be my #1 because I appreciated it on a whole new level after seeing them. Temples on the other hand, played such a boring show that I haven't touched their album since.

These are the same ninnies who think mid-November is the end of the year.
A nice list from Pop Matters. Top 3 are Kendrick, Lorde, and Fever Ray.
FINALLY someone gives those Kendrick and Lorde albums some recognition...
EDIT: But actually that's probably one of my favorite lists so far. Don't quite agree with all the rankings, but it's got pretty much all my favorites. No major snubs that come to mind other than maybe Grizzly Bear and Oh Sees
Kind of surprised at the love being shown to "Green Light." I get Melodrama as a whole, but that song is probably one of my least favorites on the album.
And overall the overwhelming adoration of Melodrama and DAMN on these lists is surprising/disappointing for me. I expected this to be a year with no clear frontrunners and a lot of different opinions on AOTY, but I guess I was wrong. And both Kendrick and Lorde are artists I have a lot of love for, but I also just found both those records to be weaker than Pure Heroine and To Pimp a Butterfly respectively.

The fact that both got nominated for a bunch of Grammy's probably has to do with it aswell I think. I'm with you on Kendrick but Melodrama was in many ways an immense improvement since Pure Herione imo, she's really grown since then and you really see that in her music and her whole persona..

IMO that growth came at the expense of some of her originality. Melodrama embraced a lot more standard pop-isms and I'd wager that it won't have nearly the impact on pop music that Pure Heroine has/will

If I make a list, Blanck Mass is on there for sure.

I really like the Pitchfork song list. Lots of great representation for female producers like yaeji, The Black Madonna, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Kelly Lee Owens, Jlin, etc.
10. Jlin - Black Origami 9. Fever Ray - Plunge 8. Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy 7. Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory 6. Moses Sumney - Aromanticism 5. Lorde - Melodrama 4. Kelela - Take Me Apart 3. King Krule - The Ooz 2. SZA - Ctrl 1. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.

Not too shabby, but won't really line up with my final list. Surprised not to see FJM, The National, or Oh Sees make the cut. Especially with that Lana Del Rey album at 32...
