Considering that we just rules that the selection of Aphex Twin took AFX off the board, it seems pretty straightforward that Testpilot should not be allowed.
I'll repeat my argument that a solo artist performing different music under a different name does not make them a different person. You cannot be a side project of yourself.
If anything, this wouldn't be a side project situation but an iteration or configuration situation. In this case Joel Thomas Zimmerman was already drafted in his Deadmau5 iteration so no other iterations of the same artist can be drafted.
14) If an artist performs both solo and with a set band, then when one is drafted all iterations are off the table. For example, if Prince is drafted then Prince and the Revolution is off the table. However if Neil Young is drafted then Neil Young & Crazy Horse is off the table but not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
15) If an act has multiple lineup configurations, the one drafted should be identified when drafted. Other configurations would then be off the table. For example, if you were selecting Van Halen then you verified that you were choosing the iteration with Gary Cherone, the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar VH's would be off the table.

no it doesn’t. There’s other examples that have been picked. It’s a case by case basis. Anyone that’s informed about deadmau5 and testpilot would understand they’re different acts.

Setlist should not matter, otherwise a Grateful Dead tribute band should have been ruled invalid once the Grateful Dead was selected.
It more speaks to there not being as much a separation from the two. It's one thing if he plays a deadmau5 remix on occasion. Another if he plays one every set. There's no doubt that the two shows are different genre wise though.

Yes and no. I'm just trying to understand some common thread of a rule to decide. Also, I haven't the slightest idea who picked either act because it doesn't matter.
I also don’t think it makes sense to use AFX as a reason to veto this. There’s other examples of DJ aliases that have been picked and not even challenged so there’s obviously no specific rule on this one way or the other.
I would hope people will actually think about whether their the same act or not. Deadmau5 and Testpilot tour seperately and play completely different genres, etc.
The fact that nobody challenged it the one other time that it happened doesn't set some sort of precedent. It just means that either people didn't catch it or didn't care.
And the specific rules have been quoted in this thread. It's a different iteration of something that has already been picked.
I think that if an artist decides a selection of his or her music is distinct enough to warrant a different name with different albums or different shows, it is a different act. That is my personal guideline. That being said, we've already struck down AFX so I don't see why others should be allowed.

An artist can make different music under different aliases. These are different. Aphex Twin and AFX are distinct entities, but that ship has sailed. But, deadmau5 and testpilot are completely different. When a festival is booking testpilot, they are getting a completely different show from deadmau5.
This is too little, too late, but I think that instead of doing case-by-case polls, I think we should have initially polled a rule change/addition regarding this issue when it first came up, so that way all future picks would be following the same guideline.
