I loved it, but definitely understood it as a backstory filler. The thing I loved about it (and this has happened on a few shows....I think some Danny McBride stuff) is how fucking perfect that kid is as young Jesse. All of the Jesse lines sounded like they were being delivered by Danny. I don't know if they had Danny do the scenes and have the kid copy them. Or if he studied the way Danny delivers lines on his shows but damn did that kid nail it.
I also was a huge fan of getting some extended time with Baby Billy and the rivalry/heated tension between him and Eli. I think it's possible that the battle against the local ministers and the blackmail tape stuff will all end up being resolved so the main fight between Eli and Baby Billy can take center stage. Would be interesting. The way that episode ended with both of them definitely feels like it's not finished...despite Eli saving Billy.
I am actually really enjoying the way they're portraying Eli as someone who truly is good/does believe in all they are doing. When he is alone or with Amy Leigh he's not turning off the religious stuff and acting like adult Jesse does. It seems like he's a believer even if he sometimes wields his immense power and profits greatly. Even the reveal in the previous episode abotu the fact that they literally hire and pay people to simply pray on their congregations prayer requests was surprising. If he was fully just in it for the money he wouldn't be giving a shit about that stuff.
I liked this episode a lot and liked seeing the dynamic between Billy and Amy. But I can't wait for next week as they seem to be doubling down on "car pranks" lol
Yup, saw this after I posted. There's a few other times where the kid version of someone just absolutely nails it. This sounded like Danny McBride's delivery.
Only other example I can think of right now is Jacob Tremblay playing a hallucination of young Will Forte in Last Man on Earth. Though that was easier because it's only one or two scenes but the way he calls his brother a "turd" made me instantly think of Forte's delivery. The It movie sequel also did really well in matching the adults to the kids.
That kid playing Jesse was unbelievable. He sounded just like Danny McBride. thejeremy thought that it might be dubbed at first, but that was just some damn fine casting.
I agree that the episode drew out, but I also get the importance of the backstory in the episode.

I was raised in an evangelical household and still consider myself a believer (but don't associate with the "evangelical" tag once it became more political than spiritual). So I'm interested in hearing you say that. I was afraid that all this show would focus on was the hypocrisy, of which there's a ton, of course. I'm still worried that there isn't enough heart in the show. I've been reluctant to post this because I think I'm in the minority here and I generally just don't feel like talking about my religious beliefs. I'm glad to see you think there is some good in Eli though. I think marking that contrast will make the show have a longer, richer life.

Definitely agree on the kid that played Jesse.
Overall so far, I’m not sure I love this one as much as Eastbound and Down or Vice Principals. Not sure why exactly. It’s just not clicking as much with me yet. That said, I am still enjoying it quite a bit, and my overall feel for it could certainly change. It has definitely had some moments that got big laughs from me. Example - the line “runnin’ through the house with a pickle in my mouth” completely cracked me up for some reason.

Same. It's very dark and very enjoyable, the problem for me is that I find it overall less funny than those shows, which is surprising given the cast. Adam Devine in particular is disappointing in bringing the laughs so far. I do crack up every time Keefe is on the screen, though, and baby Billy's son Harmon was killing me this week. Judy is good for laughs, too.

My gf is the same way and it's right at the point where you can laugh at it without feeling offended by it. It focuses more on the things that obviously need to change, treatment of women, greed, without attacking the faith. There's a big audience in people just leaving the church or who have reformed and if it was much harsher you'd probably lose them.
And yeah, you could rewrite this story and probably leave out the evangelical part, but including it gives really unique parts like the baptism in China and all the youth group stuff which is gold.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I noticed today that, during Misbehavin', Aimee-Leigh points at the ground when she says Satan one time like Kelvin does in an earlier episode. It's a nice touch.

I can't wait to go back and re-watch while looking for all the background jokes or watch other characters facial reactions. I'm sure there's a lot of little connections and things like that.

Great episode. Loved all the Judy stuff and seeing more Tim Baltz. Also a big fan of Jesse's subtle cruelty by keeping the coins that Gregory made to commemorate their shared experience only to have them be thrown away now that they think they're in the clear. The roller coaster of emotions from Gregory who was delighted to see Jesse kept them until he is told to toss it away is glorious. That's one of the things that Danny McBride shows do so well....the casual cruelty to side characters that just doesn't get addressed or much consequences.
I go back to the post I made about John Goodman being a wildcard and I still stick by it. I'm leaning on the side of him being genuine and good and not just someone who does this shit for the money. I liked his little epiphany moment when he's watching Baby Billy and Judy on stage and sees the footage of his wife and it seems like he either came to accept it or saw the error in his ways for not giving Judy more to do. Either way, it's nice and I like what they're doing but I also wouldn't be surprised if in some desperate moment he reveals that he did just steal Aimee from Baby Billy's act and then profited off it all. But for now I like what they're doing with him. His kids are spoiled brats who have low morals but he still seems like a believer.

Another part of Jesse's subtle cruelty (that he doesn't even realize he's doing) is when celebrating, before tossing the coins, he's so excited that they did it and "no one got hurt" until his friend points out that he got shot. It's such a self-centered type of thing where he absolutely doesn't care about the others and what happens to them.
Other highlights were Kelvin's short lived fancy soda dispenser machine, Jesse doing the "get in" and driving away trick to Judy, and the Gideon/Jesse talk where they both said they like the other and almost went for a hug. I really like Skyler Gisondo in the 3 things I've seen him in and I hope he gets added to the McBride cast of characters for whatever Danny does next. Just like how he kept on Edi Patterson and Walton Goggins.
I like how the payoff to the 'previously on Gemstones' with Devine and the girl was just that he got a fast food soda machine, and not a new relationship

The part that slayed me was when Jesse and his wife are in the kitchen talking about the car pranks, and she asks how a car flipping over is a prank. "Well, obviously it's not a very good one." That line was delivered so well, it still got me even though I knew it was coming.

His response pranks including "cramming a bunch of crickets in the glove box" were great.
Also thee argument with Jesse and Judy where she talks about marrying BJ, moving to malibu, shaving her pussy and surfing. "Why would you shave your pussy?" "To SURF FASTER!!"
