It's one of those songs that I heard way way too many times growing up to where it's grating on the ears, Axl at his most irritating, and I gotta turn it if it comes on the radio. Who knows, the power of the live music moment might make me appreciate it.
There's a lot more to the song than Axl! It's a powerful freight train of a song.

Yeah that’s lame that they don’t have one. Some of it is on the radio, but I like watching ACL. You do get a bunch of metal tonight on tv from rock in rio and King Crimson is Sunday. But yeah, I’m glad I decided to come. Today should be fun. It’s hot but we’ve been loafing and drinking Beer. Hit Valentina’s Tex Mex bbq for a sample of everything. Everything was good, and though it’s not blow away or anything, id eat there any time. House sausage was good. Spare rib special was good. Cerveza steak fajitas were really good. We should be there for 3. Can’t wait to see Black Pistol Fire again. They remind me of Lightning Bolt and DFA though they are their own thing.
We saw some decent shit on Day 1. We got there about 5 minutes into Black Pistol Fire and watched the rest of that set. This was the second time I’d seen them. They were better at Voodoo a few years ago, but this set was still good. The last two songs were when they let it rip with the finale being the guitarist crowd surfing out into into the crowd while playing. Also they brought out some hype guys to rap a song or two. I think it was the cats from Blackilac, but I’m not 100% on that.
We watched the first King Princess song before going catch 2 songs by Monsieur Perine.
Next stop was Troyboi. This set was pretty disappointing. I’ve seen him about 5 times, and I felt like this was the weakest one. Whereas he usually blasts grime, trap and hip hop, he was doing a lot of song shit with some houseier beats in his drops. There were some good parts, but otherwise it was kind of a waste.
Next was a trip to Tito’s Tent for The Comet Is Coming. While this set wasn’t as good as the blow away one at Bonnaroo, it was still great. Sometimes Tito’s can get unbearable, but this wasn’t crowded at all. We walked in and went straight to the front. Bravo. My buddy and his old lady who went to Raconteurs said that was pretty great too. Sorry to have missed that, but Comet was the right pick for me. Sparse crowd that was there was into it.
Next we passed by RL Grime for the first two songs. I just saw him again last week for the zillionth time, so I didn’t really need to see him again. He did do a Clockwork song second which was kind of cool I guess.
Next stop was Thom Yorke’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. This show was weird and interesting. I should have just sat on the hill and watched the whole thing. What we did was watch the first half hour or so. Light show and screens were pretty great. However, GNR must have been ridiculously loud as the sound was blasting us from the side and we were still pretty far away from that stage. We ended up going sit by the flags to catch some of GNR from way back. We went back over to Thom Yorke and watched most of the end of the set. It was pretty hard to describe and fairly different from song to song. It would be hard for me to rate this other than to reiterate that it was interesting and I’d like to see it again.
Next stop was all of Tame Impala. Tame was as great as they always are, and it was relatively the same songs you’ve heard and seen the last several years. But it’s Tame, so you know it will rule. It was nice to finally catch them in person with a giant production. We left after that so, I didn’t get to seen any of the rest of GNR. We have them in3 weeks, so I’ll see it then. My friend liked it and said Slash was the highlight and that Duff and the drummer were good. He wasn’t as high on Axl though his old lady didn’t like him at all and was laughing about him having become a characature (sp?).
Main takeaway from day 1 was the heat. There’s never enough shade at ACL, so you deal with it. Comet is Coming and Tame Impala were the best shows of the day for me. They had decent beer so we chugged a bunch of Sol’s and Pilsner Urquells along with waters to stay hydrated because you have to.

How long are lines today to get in would you say cuz i think best Saturday is my most packed day.
We are at Skull Mechanix drinking before we head over so I’m not sure.
gotcha I’m doing weekend 2 just trying to get an idea of what to expect time and lines wise for my first time next weekend. Hope y’all all are enjoying that’s there expecting a full weekend recap from you Esteban
Haven't looked at it but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the same kind of "fuck I should have just gone both single days instead of either weekend 3 day" like I did with Radiohead
Damn, that Cure setlist has me wishing I was there. Can't wait for next week. Hoping for it being Disintegration heavy as well.
I'm very intrigued about next week's Cure setlist. They've been playing pretty much the same set all year since they've only been doing festivals, but in 2013, they did a drastically different set each weekend. And like this time, that was their last show for a while. (I'm spoiled because I was at Pasadena Daydream, so I'd love a change.)
Weather forecast is intriguing so far. Potentially 25 degrees cooler with some rain perhaps. Hearing it's Coachella-like this weekend, so I'll take a sprinkle in exchange for not burning.

Keeping an eye on that weather too. Possible highs only in the mid 70’s could be interesting g and when the sun goes down, could be brisk
Good luck on the weather next week. Saturday was even hotter than Friday. That’s been the theme for weekend 1 the last 3 years. You learn to expect mid to upper 90s. It’s not unbearable at all but you will sweat and you won’t find shade. That will always be the mega complaint I have with ACL.
Saturday was really weird for me as a festival day. I’d give it a 7 or 7.5, but I wouldn't have booked most of what I saw or wish listed it going in. The balance was way more soulful than what I see most of the time.
We started off at Tierra Whack. She was solid. She gave a fan her kicks and also she gave someone else an artist pass. She could sing and was a decent rapper.
Next we went to Brittany Howard. I wasn’t sure what the format would be for this project. It ended up her mostly singing, backed by a 6 piece band and two backing vocalists. She picked up the guitar a time or two. Anyway, show was very soul based including some anthems, blues, rock and general southern gospelly based stuff. Some of it was a little slow, and it might have been better on a Sunday, but she drips talent. Superstar to the core. We both dug the performance.
Next stop was Kali Uchis. I hadn’t seen her before. This show was also pretty damn good. The band was cool, and she is a good singer, She did a hip cover of Radiohead’s Creep. Third show in a row that was soulful, and 3rd woman of color show of the day. So I was feeling that aspect of what ACL laid out if you wanted it.
We left Kali about 15 minutes early to catch the end of Bones, but they ended early. We weren’t using the app, so it’s possible the schedule changed on us.
My plan was to go see Gary Clark Jr., but my daughter offered that we split Gary, Masego and Billie Eilish. I figured 15 Masego, 15 Billie and 30 GCJ. So we walk over to Masego who is singing with a pretty cool ass band backing him. He did some of his FKJ stuff. Pretty soulful show, so the accidental theme is still in tact. For whatever reason we went over to Gary Clark Jr next. He was just ending This Land when we were walking up. We stayed for about 25 minutes, and this show sounded spectacular particularly compared to how ACL fucked up at that stage’s sound for Deftones last year. I didn’t want to leave but whatever. We will go see the end of Billie. It was fine, so I’m not going to hate or anything. But my daughter tells me we probably should have just stayed at Gary. I had to agree. FWIW, there were a ton of really young girls at that show as you would guess. Talking 10-14, so if it was important for them, that’s cool with me.
Next was 35 minutes of James Blake. That was pretty cool. I don’t like his pop shit, but there is always good sounding music mixed in. If you like him, you’ll probably dig that show next week. It was decent for sure if not necessarily super exciting for me. We wanted to go see Metric for a few minutes but I didn’t know where that stage was. Maybe it was the Barton Springs stage but I didn’t have anything else there to know if VRBO was what they called it this year. We did manage to catch the last 15 minutes of 21 Savage which was pretty good. I didn’t much care for him the first time I saw him a few years ago at Buku. Then the next time I saw him it was better, but still just whatever. He’s clearly grown as a performer as we got some pretty decent rap in.
So all day long I’m looking forward to The Cure. I’m not a big fan but they are good as shit live. Daughter wanted to split with Childish, and we were already near Childish’s stage so we figured let’s just start there. 85 minutes later we were still there. I have seen him a few times and am not that much of a fan. But this show was so fucking good you couldn’t leave. I could see Cure on Honda stage a little bit from where we watched Childish (40 yards behind sound board), and the show looked stupid ridiculous. But we couldn’t or didn’t leave. I couldn’t help arguing in my head that I was simultaneously fucking up bad and not fucking up bad. 9 out of 10 times I’d probably have done 100% Cure instead of 100% Childish. And I can’t say that I don’t have any regrets, because I do. But I also don’t regret being at that Childish Gambino show. We didn’t get to see any of The Cure, so hopefully at least some of it will end up on YouTube.
We are back home, so 4 out of 4 ACL’s I didn’t get there on Sunday. That’s such a random thing for me because I never skip festival days. But shit always comes up that affects timing.
I’ll post some more tomorrow, but ACL is always a premier festival. I missed two of my biggest targets in their entirety (GNR & Cure). We had a blast despite the heat and lack of shade. Rating the shows I saw, and this is based on what I like:
1. Tame Impala 2. The Comet Is Coming 3. Childish Gambino 4. Thom Yorke TMB 5. Brittany Howard & GCJ

This is good to hear i was trying to decide to split Billie and GCJ or just see GCJ from a ton of comments I’m just gonna stick GCJ. Also i was already planning on splitting Gambino and The Cure. Gambino is one my favorite current artist and saw him in Nashville this past December on his this is America tour and was amazing don’t wanna miss him. Also have never seen The Cure live but never been a mega fan til recently getting more into their music so I’m making a point that I’ve gotta see them lol
That Lizzo crowd looked absolutely terrifying. No way am I seeing her now.
Terrifying in what way? Too many women? Too many dancing people? We didn't see really any bad crowds all weekend, and we hit a diverse bunch of shit. Billie Eilsh was a lot of young kids and their parents, but that was to be expected. Walking in Saturday, the Hippie Sabotage crowd appeared to be about the only dewshy collective. I don't know.

We watched some The Cure videos last night after the football game. I'm still crying over not seeing them. :crying:
Here are some clips off YouTube.
For anyone who is curious about the TYTMB show which you already know you're going to see, here are some clips from that:

It was insanely packed. People were barely budging when you were trying to get out of the crowd. I don't know if I can blame C3 for putting her on that stage instead of Honda as I didn't expect her crowd to be that big either.

Ah, I gotcha. That Miller Lite Stage is sort of the "1B" stage to American Express and Honda but is still pretty big. Unfortunately left side facing ends up at a fence so there's no room to go farther that way. The back spills into the right-side facing crowd at Honda, so you can't really go that way if people are posting up for a headliner. Lizzo is pretty big now, so this seems like an appropriate booking that just didn't work out that great because of demand.

Just got back to Denver from my first ACL ever! The music was so good but damn the heat really did detract from our experience, I'm just not used to the humidity, especially on Friday. I know people complain about it at Coachella but for some reason this zapped my energy much more dramatically. Maybe the lack of shade?
Overall I really liked how the grounds were set up. Sound quality was fantastic and stages are simple yet pleasant. The crowd was mostly ok. Didn't even attempt Lizzo, and crossing from Thom to Tame was a nearly insurmountable task. The only thing I didn't like was just how many dang people there were. 450k over 2 weekends is just INSANE, double Coachella's capacity with maybe 60-70% of the space. I guess it keeps tickets cheap? I truly felt like I didn't have breathing room the entire 3 day weekend. Another thing I noticed was how bad the crowd was with talking during sets. Probably 5-6 times a day I had to deliberately search for somewhere in the crowd where people were actually paying attention to the music. Not a problem during Billie or Cardi but when James Blake is crooning it really impacts the mood.
Every artist I saw really put their all into each set, highlights being Tame of course, The Cure, The Raconteurs. You could tell they were happy to be at the festival.
Lil Uzi dropping should be a surprise to no one, as he had other shows scheduled during ACL weekend. The chants of "quack Uzi" really cracked me up. Cardi was ~25 minutes late to a 60 minute set which is frankly pathetic but they let her continue past her scheduled time to make up for it.
