We've talked about this before but it always makes me laugh when you hear right wingers talking about Hollywood as if it's some commie haven. SO MANY people in the film industry are the most milquetoast liberals you could ever imagine. And the work culture is completely elitist and full of the privileged.
Let me know when the people in the film industry start to understand that being able to travel for work is a privilege. Being able to afford it, have it paid for, have babysitters and more watching their children is a privilege. They do not understand that they work in a privileged field and it matters what they do with it. Right now it is totally not marketable to use said power for betterment, or even sophisticated art, right now it's about pushing palatable content and corporate work. Seriously, if people saw the underbelly of the market they would think twice. I have existential crisis over my work, imagine starting and running your own company - struggling, and then seeing some change towards success -- but realizing how toxic your work environment is? I'm totally rattled - because I also see the other work people do as part of my own work, and I would go crazy doing that bullshit too.
Listen to the Scriptnotes episodes on Pay Up Hollywood. The work culture is privileged because the privileged are the only ones who can work in Hollywood.
As a PA in the film industry, it's fucked. I work 12hr shifts, get all the grunt work and can't get out of the PA position until "I've paid my dues."
This is ultimately where the sexism and racism gets to spill into this marketplace. They also hate that if you are unable to "just pay your dues" in a certain venue of the industry i.e. sound, hair + mu in certain markets, producing, directing -- your upward mobility is cut off. I at age 34 finally started being able to demand full rates, or walk away if I want to, but I also can't because you never know when a droughts coming if you aren't on a continuing show or unionized. I've paid 12 years of dues, but I can see the glass ceiling, and I can see the squirrelly expectations of production for us to work harder and bring more for less. And then they will get pissed off at US and not hire us in the future because we didn't bring 10lbs of extra gear that they didn't pay for.
It's dirty as fuck to get a lot of these productions, and prod. companies off the ground. And watching the collapse of Vice and finding out about mass firings/lay offs for camera and editors recently from multiple places tells me a lot.
Edited. I never think about it because I grew up skinny. Today (Thursday) I'm busting at the belt and probably need to drop 30ish to get back in mediocre shape. Again, didn't mean to be a dick there.
Do you think any of the candidates on the debate stage next week could beat Trump in 2020?
No. We need to realize the majority of the world is sexist and racist.
I think we need to realize that there is a candidate that...
1. Is an outsider that is not owned by the establishment or any outside interests. 2. Has a passionate base of young supporters and first time voters. 3. Isn't considered a "libtard" by conservatives because of his business acumen / history. 4. Is converting Trump supporters online every day. 5. Is quick-witted, young and funny. 6. Speaks directly to the problems that concern Trump supporters and facilitated his election.
And his primary reason for running is because he desperately wants to eradicate poverty before a massive wave of automation and AI soaks up all of our jobs.
It's like I'm watching a completely different race from everyone else, but it's so clear to me that Yang is the obvious answer to the electable question and I just wish Dems would give him the time of day.

And also being manipulated by the richest of the rich. Fucking Murdoch and his propaganda mixed with the Koch's, Mercers, etc. are basically controlling so much of the world with their money.
But yes...there's also a lot of idiots who are just fine being racist and sexist as a default which makes them easier to control.
We've reached the era of populism. If we don't elect Bernie and left-wing populists, we're gonna get Trump or worse for years to come. Moderates and whatever the fuck Democrats have thrown at us for decades won't cut it anymore.

They'll side with the lunatics like a lot of the Lib-Dems and the UK press did.
The dumbfucks in this country will use this to say we can't go too far left. We let them win, we are fucked. End of story.

If Obama even joked about something like this they would lose their fucking minds. They are so close to maintaining complete control and will not stop. There's no turning back for so many Republicans
