Ride The Lightning Master of Puppets Kill Em All And Justice For All Death Magnetic The Black Album Reload Load Hardwired to Self Destruct St Anger
Comments:
Black Album is definitely better than Death Magnetic, and I say that as a big Death Magnetic fan. Depending on the day I might also put Black Album before AJFA.
Hardwired is definitely better than Load and Reload, and I'll assert with slightly less certainty it should also be above Death Magnetic. Very rare to have an album that damn good from a rock or metal band multiple decades into their career. The new songs also go over surprisingly well at their shows.
RTL is missing from your list.
I won't try to parse whether Master of Puppets or Kill 'Em All is better. either could take the top slot. it depends on whether I think "Battery" or "Whiplash" is the best Metallica song. probably "Battery".

phish studio records only. despite the greatness of the songs on the early records, i judge jamband records on how good they are in the studio, not just how the songs became good later in live recordings. i don't know why but a lot of early career jamband records have this speedy, rushed quality, going all the way back to the Grateful Dead's debut.
i'll admit recency bias with Sigma Oasis but i listened to that record on repeat for months when it came out.

Why is License last?
Because it’s my least favorite. It definitely has some bangers for sure. And it kick started everything for them. I just think their other records are sooo much better. Like Paul’s Boutique was their second album. SECOND!!!! How crazy is that??? The growth was insane!!! It’s like night and day. Also sometimes I think To The 5 Boroughs is their weakest entry. I feel like they lost some magic with that one. So maybe I’d switch them out.

Ok, after a review I’m changing my ranking. License To Ill is fun as hell. Minus “Girls” I still can’t stand that song.

Master of Puppets Ride the Lightning Kill Em All And Justice For All Metallica
Don't know the later ones well enough to say. I did think Hardwired was alright.
I made a podcast/commentary track for their Moscow 1991 show. Once I edit out the part where I said Newsted got kicked out ("he fucking left the band" etc.) I'll post it.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

I might move it down a couple spots, it's the first thing that clicked with me for him so I probably weigh that kinda heavy. And Deletee might be the best bladee song.
