Never saw the Grateful Dead, but caught the first set of a two-set show by The Jerry Garcia Band, saw Bruce Hornsby once, and a Furthur show. At that last show, I figured out why the Dead have such a different vibe than most other rock bands. The drummers swing. Even on the band's more rocking songs, the drummers swing.
I regret never having seen the band play together. While in grad school, they played the arena on campus, which was right next door to the building where I had all of my classes. On the night of their show, I gave up on trying to get any studying done in the library since the music was loud enough to be heard in the neighboring building, so I left for home, and stood at one of the arena entrances for a few minutes. I heard a sublimely beautiful guitar solo. Not long after that, I was out of school and living in a big city where their shows sold out in minutes. A few years later Jerry died, and the opportunity to see them had been lost.
