I'm kind of a geek, but I love good music, and I occasionally lack patience. I'm looking for the best time to arrive as are many of you, and if you're so excited that you're on the boards early, you deserve to know. Please post time you hit traffic last year, how long you waited, and, if you know, which entrance or road you waited on. I'm going to get the responses together from several different boards and let everyone know what I found.
Peace and Other Good Stuff, TheRoadSplit (which way did you choose?)
We came in I-24 from the south and got in line at 7:30am Thurs.. We got 3rd row from the main stage parking in camp Kojak. SMOKIN'!! We could see and hear the main stage clearly from our camp. It took us till 3pm Thursday to get into our spot, but well worth the wait.
We stayed in Monteagle, TN last year(about 20 from Manchester on the Chattonoga side). Left hotel @ 8:00 am on Thur. morning, hit traffic about 8:15 am. After 7-8 miles of bumber-to-bumber traffic, arrived at gates about 12:30. Finally to campsite about 2:30...Not bad, but I really feel for those who won't be arriving until Thur. afternoon or later.
got there wednesday nite at about midnite, in and set up by two. We were way back in Daniel Boone but its was kinda nice back there. hearing about how long some had to wait, I would suggest going as early as possible, but if you want to be close and don't mind the traffic, come a little later
We got in line on Thurs morning at about 6:30. Got to our campground by 2 pm. The line was half the fun, drinking beer, meeting folks, other activities.

We took highway 55 last year from Murfreesboro (where i live, 20 miles away) and we waited 21 HOURS! I'm definitely hitting up I-24 this year. We left Thursday morning and got there Friday morning. I'd love to spend Thursday night at the grounds just to get situated.

It actually wasn't that bad when I look back on it. We had a big group and partied the whole time. However, I'd like to get in a little earlier this year!
I was also on the 55 highway and waited about 17 hours. It drove me crazy, but I did meet some fun people. This year it's all about I-24 though. None of this state highway crap!

Organized religion destroys who we are by inhibiting our actions... by inhibiting our decisions, out of... out of fear of some... some intangible parent figure who... who shakes a finger at us from thousands of years ago and says... and says, "Do it - Do it and I'll fu(kin' spank you."
How should I go then to Bonnaroo. I am coming from NY. I was going ot take 81 to 40 then 70 N then to 111 onto 55 into Manchester. SHould I go another way?[glow=red,2,300]TEXT[/glow]
It sounds like we'll be coming the same way... I'm meeting all of my crew in Cookeville TN off I-40, then we were planning on heading south on 111 (which turns into 70, then 55). Any other opinions on 55? We're all coming from opposite directions, so this seemed like the best option for us... we'll be leaving Cookeville around 10am Thursday.
We got in last year about 2 am Thursday night, off of I-24. There was no line at all, but we ended up WAY back in Daniel Boone, or one of the camps down that looong road. Sounds like we may have gotten closer if we would have waited. This year we'll be in an RV, and will be getting there about 2 or 3 am again. Our driver's idea is to go on in, but don't set up, then find the ultimate spot early the next morning. I'm thinking this is not such a good idea, and maybe we should just park it & sleep at WalMart until morning and get in line. What do you think? Any advice is most welcome.

I'd say wal-mart. My posse is heading up from GA and we plan to arrive at walmart around three, buy last minute stuff and meet cool people to possibly camp with, and just generally enjoy the pre-bonnaroo buzz. We're planning on getting in line around seven Thursday morning. However, all this advice comes from a Bonnaroo virgin, so take it with a grain of salt. It just seems more fun to do it this way.
Hi All! This is my first post... A group of us are driving down from Canada, about 15 of us - we are leaving thursday at 6pm or so, so we plan to get into tennesee around 5 am friday morning - is that a terrible time?? Where would we be camping?? Thanks.
Each of the last three years we have left Chicago around 4-6pm on Thursday and always end up getting to Manchester around midnight or 1am on Friday. I think the way that arrival time corresponds to camping spot varies year by year. If I remember right, I think that in '03 they tried to put early arrivers towards the back but other than that I think the earlier you arrive the better. Our wait has gotten shorter each year (12 hours, ~8, ~5) but our camping spot has gotten progressively worse, to the point where last year we far enough out in the boondocks that it was really a pain in the neck. With a "driving through Thursday night" travel schedule, we are all always pretty wiped out for the Friday shows and have to break to rest up if we want to do the late night. We are always pitching camp on Friday in the late morning and its just too exhausting to dive into 16 hours of music right away. I am hoping and praying that my companions will be able to leave on Wednesday with me this year but we'll see.
So if you can, try to leave earlier (as early as possible). If you can't try to keep each other well rested during the trip, realize that you may be pushing it to catch the very first act depending on all of the variables. In '02 we didn't get to the stages until an hour or two after things got started, but that was with the insane 12 hour wait that we haven't experienced since.
We got there last year about midnight thursday night, got to our camp spot around 3:30. We also had a pretty good camp spot as far as distance from Centeroo. As far as I am concerned it'd luck of the draw.

We left Indiana at 4ish on Wednesdy, rolled in on I24 around 10ish, drove straight into our camping spot (no wait) Green Lantern across the bridge on Shakedown Street. It was perfect, we had clean potties and fresh coffee every morning and were only a 10 minute walk from stages. I suggest getting there Wdenesday in the cover of darkness. P.S. They start music on Thursday night to keep us early birds happy, but don't open the stores until Friday.
We left Cookeville TN around 8 Friday morning, were in line by nine. We had to wait about five hours before getting in parked. But we came down on 55 with no problems. It looked like I-24 was far worse on the waiting aspect than we were at that time. And apparently they were tired of herding people thru by the time we got there and they put us in day parking number 2. Worked out for us pretty well, but I have heard others with stories of being camped way out.

last year, shit happened and we got there later than i usually like to, around 9-ish thursday night...and honestly, we were completely in and set up by 1-ish, it wasnt bad at ALL...still, this year im bailing on that plan and going up there wednesday night from atl
oh and another great place for last minute pee stops and general pre-roo buzzness are the rest stops on 24...wednesday-friday, its like nothin but roo-goers. great times
I personally think it's a crap shoot. You can never judge where you're going to be because it's different every year. We're RV'n it and I'm worried that we're gonna be in BFE just because of the luxury of it. Who knows what's up.
I'm driving from Baltimore (~12 hours?), and was thinking of leaving on Wednesday during the day, arriving Thursday, early-morning (1 a.m.?) and then just chillin. I was wondering though, what is the absolute-earliest time we could arrive and still be allowed to set-up camp? It sounds like the "early bird" camp spots might be far from Centeroo, but it might be nice to sleep a bit and prepare for the weekend.
This will be my second, so I only have experience with last year. They will annnounce a time that the gates will "open". We live kinda close, so we drove by last year. A guy workin' the gated area said that they were a week ahead of schedule, due to good weather. I don't think there ever was an official opening time. We got there at midnight on Weds. and there were already a ton of people there ahead of us. We were WAAYYYYY in front of most, but were still beat. We didn't have a bad camping area either. We only had about a 10 minute walk. Some people walked over an hour. 600+ acres are BIG. I'm sure when it gets closer, we'll cruise out there again and see if we can see anything. The future weather map says that it is calling for LOTS of rain over the weekend of Memorial Weekend. Hopefully, if that comes to pass, it won't hold them up long.
I've been twice, and both times we left Indianapolis around 11 pm Wed, arriving in line in the wee hours Thurs morning after making a couple stops on the way down to pick up members of our posse, and then getting my official wrist band around 7:00 am Thurs. Yes, the wait in line has gotten shorter, but two years ago our campsite was less than 10 min walk from Centeroo; last year we were 30 min away.
I believe "crapshoot" is the word of the day.
But, if you can swing it, I love getting there by Thurs afternoon to get set up, then get the party started on Thurs evening and night. Thursday night is insane!!!
ok i found out that i have to leave later then expected now. so it is either leave as soon as i could but it would be 3 am thuresday or sleep a few hours and leave like 8 am thuresday ? i am coming from pa like a 16 hr drive, leave at 3 be there at 7 pm thuresday or leave at 8 am and get there at 12 midnight, was wondering if a camp site area or car line will be greatly different based on these two different times ? any advice would help , thanks
