I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the Variflex Instant canopies they sell at places like Sports Authority and Dicks. I think they come in 8x8 and 10x10. I am thinking about buying one because i want an easy and sturdy way to stay out of the rain/heat. It would take up some space in the car but it can be set up almost instantly. Any thoughts?
Not for the sides, but as an extension of the roof. The more shade the better and when the sun is anywhere but 10-2 in the sky, you will not have shade. We had 2 of the 10x20 tarps and 1 30x30 tarp last year and it was great. We kept the car, tent, seating area and the neighbors in the shade the whole time. It helps to keep everything out of the sun from your tent to your coolers.

I have an EZ-UP. They sell them at Sams Club for around $199. I really like it. The only thing is they become a kite in the wind so make sure to stake it down good. & they are not totally rain proof. I camp dried mine and it still leaks in a good rain storm. I took it last year to bonnaroo & our neighbors hung out with us cause of the great shade.
I bought one of the varaflex ones...i think its called a quick shade? What does the Camp Spray do? Make it more waterproof? I am guessing that even though these things are mainly designed to keep the sun off of you, they are probably somewhat able to keep you dry? I am sure i can rig something to the top to make it more waterproof too? Any suggestions?
We've been using a 10x10 canopy for years and it works great. I put a truck tent in the back of my P/U truck and put the canopy behind my truck. I hook it all together with a 20x30 tarp, some stakes and some dollar store clamps. I've made sides for the canopy out of 8x10 tarps with velcro along the top and sides so if the weather gets bad I can put up a side in the direction the storm is coming from and stay totally dry. The sides are also great when you leave your campsite, we always put them up with everything inside. Out of site out of mind for the borrowing for good types. Bill

You can't take a canopy into the music area. I brought in an umbrella the last two years with no problems. I have fair skin and that umbrella saved me from a world of hurt!
BigBrant~if you buy one of the variflex things or an ez-up the poles come with it. It just opens up like an accordian. If you don't want to spend the money just get tarps and tie them to your car and maybe to a neighbors car or stake it into the ground.
waterproofing the canopy~ yes I camp dried it to make it more waterproof. It is somewhat water proof but I was vending at a festival with it a few summers ago and it rained really hard & I found out it wasn't water proof. The camp dry helps but you could always through a tarp over it.

Erica -- a regular fold up rain-type umbrella? And nobody complained about seeing over it? I get sun poisoning crazy bad and I'm trying to figure out how to stay out of the sun as best as possible.

Umbrella ?~ Nope no one complained but I am 5'3" so I don't think anyone would have a problem seeing over me! Plus I mainly stick to the back where I have plenty of dancing room. I have one of those small umbrella that is like 4 or 5 inches long so the people searching me didn't notice it. I don't know if you are actually allowed to bring them in or not. If you hold it right over your head you are not going to be blocking anyones view. Well no more so than if you were just standing there. Bring it! Being out for the count due to the sun would really suck!
Stick to the misting tents as much as possible. Shade and hydration for your skin. Mmmmmmmmmm......
That's what I did. They actually were pretty conveniently located last year from my perspective. And the "wetness" generally varies under the tent, so you can get wetter or not as you choose.
Mmmmm. Misting. Hope I don't no Ebola or nuffin'...
I'm loading up on the SPF 40. Misting tents sound really good. Sun poisoning seems to be cumulative. I'm good for a couple of days, and then get this nasty, itchy rash that's like poison ivy. It's more of an allergy than anything. I'll bring plenty of benadryl gel and tablets. That helps. Maybe I'll borrow a big bedouin gown and turban thing from somewhere . . . if it works in the desert it should work at bonnaroo, right?
