do think that empire is obviously better than new hope, but on a sci Fi level it really didn't add much to the already established world
*as I typed that I feel like the whole cloud city/Carbonite thing was a sick add
I mostly agree, if only because of my appreciation for the overall story of how Star Wars came to be and how it was doomed to fail and then went on to change the cinematic landscape forever with its success.
But also so much of the franchise's success is because of Empire. It is the perfect sequel. It's more original in concept and affects the story in ways that make the audience more invested in its characters and its world. If Empire had failed, then Star Wars would just be a blip in film history. We'd probably still have blockbusters, but perhaps not franchises, at least not in the way we do today.
I like Star Wars more than Empire, as I think it's a little more fun and I enjoy its simplicity. It's just such a shame how damn difficult it is to find the original cut. Disney releasing the original cuts on Disney Plus would be a nice olive branch to all of the people they pissed off with the sequel trilogy.

Given that releasing the original theatrical cuts of these films would basically be a license to print money, I have to imagine Lucas is the reason this doesn't happen.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount
Short read on how much Ridley Scott admires 2001 A Space Odyssey, and how it and Blade Runner were both maligned by critics and ignored by audiences upon release but were then later appreciated over time to where they are regarded as the the two most important sci-fi films ever.
Curious what other films will have garnered more success over time. I think in 20 years time if Star Wars is still relevant then, The Last Jedi will be more appreciated than it is now. Even in 2021 I think it has a lot more defenders than it did in 2017/2018.
In TV, I hope The Expanse eventually gets the love it deserves. I can't believe it is ending this year with 3 books still to adapt.
there arent enough big great original sci Fi movies coming out that I feel like Nolan's non batman's will have a pretty large shadow, tenet came out at a weird time being first block buster during pandemic, could see that having a moment down the road
matrix 4 has a chance to either elevate or water down the franchise

It'll be interesting to see what kind of legacy Villeneuve's Dune has once Part 2 comes out. About the only serious criticism most people I know who've seen it have leveled at it so far is that it just kind of ends and obviously is only the first part of a two-part story.

FINAL FOUR. Most lists I found to qualify films had these in the top 5, so I think this is a pretty appropriate final four. Also, every one of these films won by one vote.
#8 Star Wars (1977) vs #29 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

So earlier this year I was commissioned to do a re-scoring film series for a venue. I did Blade Runner and re-scored it with like Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Caribou, Floating Points, Kelly Lee Owens etc
Here is the link if any of you want to check it out
