Hey all, i'm 18, a senior in high school, and really want to go to Bonnaroo, but i'm just trying to figure out what the best way to go is. You think it's a cool environment for an 18 yr old? I think i'll be fine, it's my parents who are worrying...i smoke, drink, i'm not worried about that, i'm just worried about driving up from philly, trying to find a camping spot, not getting beat up haha...Any thoughts, advice, recommendations? Any comments would be appreciated. Jake

Four time vertan with some advice: Have a good tent that has been waterproofed.Take lots of water. It might be hot it might me rainy. Take shorts and long pants for those cool evening. Mud boots are a definate must have. Try wal-mart or Target. Much mud at Bonnaroo. Take exrta $. I have seen the lines at the ATM's and they are long! Don't waste time standing in line when you could be catching a great performer? You can bring food and beer but no bottles. Hope this helps. Have fun!
Cool, i know this sounds kinda lame, but do a lot of fights break out at bonnaroo? I think it's a reasonable question. Everyone is drunk or stoned (i will be too), do a lot of fights happen?

There really aren't alot of overintoxicated folks, really. I myself have never seen a fight break out, ever. I've heard about someone getting mugged but that's all rumor.
Hey thanks for answering my post...I have a ton of questions, i won't bother you with too many though... How early should we get there if we don't want to walk an hour to the stage from our spot? How far are the parking lots from stages? Are most people there real cool, not thingyheads? How's the food there? Is there merch for sale? Thanks, Jake

You may have to walk up to 1/2 mile to get to the gates from your camp, maybe alot less, depending on where they park you. You camp right by your car, they leave enough space for a tent behind your car. Check Bonnaroo's main site under archives and there should be a map to view. There is a very diverse group going there, i.e. different age groups and musical tastes. Some are there to party others to sell t-shirts or beers, or grilled cheese! No matter what just about everyone there is cool (even the jerk who was hitting on my girlfriend right in front of me and her brother in 2004). The food has been good enough for me, but i can live on pizza and pop. If you want you can bring in a coleman stove and food and drink. 2002 (first year) had THE best vending. 2004 had alot, too. Last year had very little. I guess it all depends on who's playing.
you wont ever have to walk an hour. half hour, tops. and the walk isnt bad --- you usually meet a bunch of cool people on the walk, at least i did. my walk was about 20 minutes and worth every minute... cuz i got to camp in the shaaaade.
i have no idea how far day parking lots are from the stages, but as far as campsites(thats where you park your car, too), they're as close as 2 seconds to 30 minutes (walking).
99% of the people there are cool. if you go in with the mentality that everyone is there for the same reason (good music!!!), that number will remain constant.
the food is amazing. there is so much to chose from. my favorite are the veggie quesadillas made around the various shakedown-ish-areas. i had an amazing falafel, too. my meat-eating friends raved about some pork something or other. there's so much good food it's ridiculous. it is, however, a bit pricey --- bring your own snacks, drinks, and some meal-type items. we brought tons of gatorade, water, granola bars, apples, oranges, tortilla chips, salsa, mixed nuts and random non-perishables like fruit roll ups.
there is a ton of merch for sale. walk down any main aisle near your camp site. they "pod" areas are full of people selling shit, and the main shakedown is full of vendors. also, there are tons of vendors inside centeroo that sell a bunch of stuff, too. you'll be able to find everything from batiks to teeshirts to glass to hemp to patchies to artwork to... you get my drift.
Jake, if you go alone, you could also consider meeting up with other solo attendees ... check out the Bonnaroo discussion group, which is all via live email and can be hard to keep up with due to volume, but is full of lots of cool people. A group of Soloroosters meets up every year at the Wal-Mart in Manchester and then caravans in together, so you can make friends before the event and then camp near them at the show.
Here's info on the discussion group (found under Info on the Bonnaroo website):

As others have said, a lot of the info you're looking for is already posted right here in this forum, so search away! Also, nobody is going to 'beat you up.' I've never seen a fight, but even if there was, there are 79,998 other people there to pull you and your assailant apart, pretty god*amn fast. Just play it cool, mang! You'll have a blast even if you go alone, but get friendly with your camping neighbors. They can keep an eye on your camp when you're not around, and vice versa. If they're cool with it, which they almost undoubteldy will be, maybe tag along with them! My first year I spent a lot of time checking out shows and wandering around all by my lonely and I had the time of my life. Keep your head screwed on straight, soak up the sun, soak up the music, and how ever much water you're planning on bringing, triple it.
