I am taking a used Isuzu trooper this year. There are 3 of us this year. The previous 2 years I have taken my Chevy cavalier and only 2 people. So the question I have is I am thinking of getting one of those duffel bag roof carrier. Has anyone used these previously? Can you get a lot of things in them? And did security make you take everything out ? I am thinking of getting one and wanted to make sure it was worth the extra cash? I just purchased a new Columbia tent and also a shower tent. So I am trying to watch my money wisely. Any thoughts would help.
I have a Samsonite soft nylon rooftop carrier for my suv that I think is similar to what you're talking about. I've been very happy w/ mine, it holds a lot, it's not too much of a pain to put on, its water resistant (but not proof, a major downpour for hours will get through), folds up small for storage, is pretty durable, and far cheaper than a hard carrier (paid about $80 4 yrs ago on fleabay). I have no idea what kind of search you'd be in for (my gut says not much, but who knows).
I just bought one on ebay, I have not received it yet but I'll let you know when it arrives. Go to ebay and type in kanga zoom. You don't even need a roof rack for this model.
It came the other day, Fits nice on the car(a 4 door) It fits alot of stuff, very tall. with or without a rack. The only thing is the straps are right above your head inside the car. If you can handle that I think its worth it.
we rented one of the hard roof top carriers from uhaul in 04. it was on a cherokee and the uhaul place put it on and took it off. there was four of us. we split it and i think it was 8 bucks apiece. it worked out well and they didnt make us open ours. but we saw them make someon open up theirs in front of us

I just got a water proof one on ebay. I think it will be some added space at least. I am looking forward to using it. Hopefully it is not too much work, I am trying to keep things simple.
I've got a hard-case topper that I bought at a garage sale a couple years ago, and it was the only way we were getting all our gear down there last year (and we've got another person in our party this year). Fortunately, we'll be bringing a few less food provisions due to the VIP hook-up, so it just might work.
Though they had me pop the hatch to rifle through the stuff we had in the vehicle, they never even really looked at the topper.
We use one of the canvas ones, and really like the fact that you can squash it down to almost nothing and store it in the trunk on the way out. There's always more room in the car when you've eaten all the food and drank all the beer.
I have a Thule one that worked great on my move out West. My stepdad strapped it to the top of my Element using the little strap hooks on top. I know da*n well I couldn't have got it to stay up there myself. I jammed a ton of clothes and some other random sh*t in there. It was a 15 hour drive through rain and intense wind at times -- the thing didn't even budge. I think it was about $70 at the local Sports Authority.
