i second that. roo aint roo if your not living as part of the community. seriously. if you want the roo experience you should camp... but to each their own. if you dont mind well water there is plenty of water at roo. if you like bottled water you can bring factory sealed bottles into centeroo. and you can buy bottles from people in the campgrounds a lot cheaper then roo sells it for.

Its going to be such a hassle to have to get to and from a hotel all weekend... We've beat this up in other threads before... You're going to miss shows and campground action, you'll have to worry about driving, it'll be alot of walking and more work for less festival...

Actually, my experience was less walking, more shows seen, and less work. The extra driving and less time to hang out in the campgrounds were definitely negatives compared to my camping the previous 3 years. But I was able to sleep in 'till 11am in AC, take showers (if that's important to a person - not really to me), and in general had much more energy when I hit Centeroo due to being rested (the sun coming up at 7am really cuts those 4 extra hours of sleep right out when staying in a tent). I saw more late-night shows due to being well-rested too. Plus the day-parking was about half as far away from Centeroo as BFE or the spots by the "back" entrance. Only a 15 minute walk as opposed to 30 minutes the previous years.
That said, I'm back to camping this year. ;D
I really did miss the interaction in the campgrounds, being able to cook a steak dinner on a grill, and having a "home base" to crash in. I'm hoping a tent fan will extend the hours I can sleep, and I'm not going to use the "back" entrance where I've been stuck with 30 minute-walks to Centeroo the last two years.
But the hotel experience was overall a positive for me last year. YMMV.

As a 4 year 'roo vet, this makes me incredibly sad. Cancel your reservation and camp! A hotel defeats the whole purpose of the 'roo experience. of course it's about the music first and foremost, but the scene runs a close second. Camp, get dirty, meet new people, fall asleep in your tent listening to live music....that's what 'roo is all about to me.
I would leave your brother at the hotel and bring a tent. You will miss out on so much...plus the driving back and fourth is an accident waiting to happen...especially if you are tired, partied out...good luck

I thought the very same thing after last year. And with 4 people the price would be similar. But seeing all those RV's getting searched on the side of the TN interstate makes me a little wary of riding down in one. I like to keep a lower profile than that. If I could rent one on-site, but not in VIP, I would be in Heaven.

I would have to Concur...2 years under my belt and would not do anything else but camp. Its all part of the experience. The lots, the crazy wookies roaming about in the wee hours, having neighbors, just chillin at camp and people watchin, and not having to drive home twacked. Bring a tent!!

I just couldnt imagine having the thought of driving to some hotel in my head all day long... When i let loose i want to let loose... I dont want to be thinking about driving anywhere... Just me, all depends on what you plan on making of your Roo adventure... After seeing shows all day and night im not going to have energy to do much more than wander to tent only and crash before another round...

yea, some people say its all about the music, but thats not true. if it was all about the music i'd wait until austin city limits in september and only have a 2 hour drive and stay at some friends apartment.
its all about the experience for me; sleeping in a tent, waking up with not a care in the world other than what band to go see first / which one of those guys walking around muttering weird words to approach / i wonder if i should eat a dank veggie burrito or a grilled cheese?

Nope, I can't say I've stayed at a hotel....I'm just thinkin from the perspective of how much my experience would change if I weren't a part of the community and I was just showing up for music and then leaving. I love everything about bonnaroo, and I wouldn't have such an incrediable time if I wasn't 100% immursed in it from thur to mon. To each is own though..

I'd personally feel kind of weird laying in a hotel bed after being at the Roo all day... It would be a very broken up weekend, i like the fact that the whole weekend kind of bleeds together into this one incredible experience, if i stayed in a hotel i dont think i'd catch the vibe as well... Plus i'd be pretty preoccupied the whole time, thinking about driving and whatnot... Just me... Im sort of a minimalist, i'll spring for a hotel when theres a show in the city at a normal venue, but if they're gunna give me a patch of ground included with the price of my ticket thats where i'll be...

Exactly...bonnaroo is a mix of every and all the experiences blended together. Whether your searchin out your campsite at 5:20am or testin our incrediable brews...its all good
I think your brother should bring an orthapedic back pillow, his tent, and his vagisil and camp out! There is no way in he** I would ever go to a festival like this and not camp. You will miss at least 60% of an awesome experience with great people all around you. If you are really a virgin to Bonnaroo and want your cherry popped right, I Emplore you, PLEASE camp out. I don't even know you, but I don't have to to know that camping is definitely the way for you to go.
I'll be doing the Roo with a hotel too. I appreciate what everyone has to say here about being part of it and not being concerned with when to leave and come back BUT....I think by the 3rd day of being woken up from the heat and sounds, I'd be worn out. It's not that I would never camp....someday I may lose my home or be stranded on the side of the road, then I'd camp. As it is, I'd prefer some real sleep and just be worn out from the partying Heck, I've got 3 days in Nashville afterwards for more music, I have to save some energy. This is my first Roo though.......so it's pure speculation. I may not sleep at all. 10 days....can't wait!
This will be my first year and I would not even think of a hotel - like someone else said - in a city at a normal venue - sure - but I am looking forward to the COMPLETE Bonnaroo experience!
Complete Bonnaroo experience....hmmmm... is that: sleeping on the ground, getting all your stuff drenched in a thunderstorm, waking up in the blazing sun or being woken up by people yelling, not being able to sleep because of a drum circle without any rhythm, bugs, not using a flushing toliet or shower for days and "getting your inner hippie on"? I keep reading posts in which people are bashing staying at a hotel as not a true Roo experience. To each his (or her) own, I'm going to have a rip-roaring time and nobody can tell me different (and I don't have to get stinky to prove it). Not everyone can get a hotel, but by no means should it be glorified to camp out at the Roo. Everyone's experience will be different, I propose we return to this post afterwards and relay ours. When you catch up on your sleep, that is Smell ya later
I sort of agree with what you're saying, and I could certainly afford a hotel if I wanted to, but I don't think I would want to leave the concert.
Even with the unpleasant conditions you described, I think you find yourself more connected to the event if you experience it like 99% of the attendees.
That said, I am a little annoyed I didn't spring for VIP camping tickets...but $10 showers outside of Shakedown sounds fine by me.

My husband and I are flying from Alberta Canada to Roo and seeing as how the planes capacity and patience for luggage is limited, we decided months ago to do the whole hotel/shuttle thing. But reading all this makes me think again. We are bringing our little 2 man tent to set up in tent-only so when I'm tired/need a break I can go lie down, plus this way we get the best of both worlds..
