Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I know this is the general sentiment, but I wanted to take a closer look at some of the potential artist conflicts we have on our hands this year. While I'm generally an optimistic person, one glance at this years line-up and you know you can't see everybody. As we piece the schedule together, some conflicts become more and more glaring. The Ump/Disco tent being one of the foremost of these discussed problems.
For me at least, Friday looks like it could be either the greatest day of music in bonnaroo histroy, or the biggest schedule disaster in bonnaroo histroy. A number of the artists we have rumored for Friday are all but confirmed for that day. Oysterhead (due to Trey), Petty, Costello, and RRFB all have other shows to play during the weekend and have Friday posted on their websites. I haven't fully analyzed the validity of the other artists for Friday, but look at how many of the good/major acts lean Friday: Nickle Creek, G Love, Bright Eyes, World Party, Blackalicious, LB, DCFC, Ricky Skaggs, Mike Gordon, and Ben Folds!
Obviously all of those can't be right, but here's how I'd think the day works out: Main Stage: RRFB - Ricky Skaggs - Costello - Petty
Which Stage: Bright Eyes - Nickle Creek - Ben Folds (not necessarily conflicting with Costello)
Tents: World Party, G Love, Mike Gordon, DCFC (?), assorted smaller acts
Late nite: Which Stage: Oysterhead
Some kind of hip hop tent, maybe an "indie" tent.
I hate to speculate this way, putting some of the best hip-hop against Oysterhead, but it looks very probable. This would free up saturday night for less Ump/Bisco conflict. But where does Beck fit in? Before Radiohead? That would probably work out, although I had hoped to get Beck in the dark. Even still, there is going to be some overlap between some of these guys, Friday is going to be a complicated and long day.
Saturday night seems like the likely night for Umph/Bisco to me, as we don't have much stacked up that evening. Dresden Dolls would be something superfly would run against it, an experimental "jam alternative". Saturday also might feature a New Orleans style tent, which might induce more conflict; and it very well could be at night, the optimum time for Dr. John.
Sunday seems to be nice and jam happy, the main stage will probably have jam bands all day long, with the Which stage featuring Matisyahu, Malkmus, Sonic Youth or Bonnie Raitt?
The "intra-genere" conflicts seem to be less likely Saturday and Sunday from what I can tell. And at least IMO Friday has too much stuff to handle.
Waddya guys think? We've talked about the potential (if not necessity) for Superfly to re-arrange how they schedule, what should they do? What conflicts have got you concerned?

I have to agree, Friday is a holy mess! I can see the main stage with Randolph, Costello, and Petty in that order and the second stage having Cat Power(maybe someone before her) Bright Eyes and DCFC. There is a lot of Bluegrass/country that day, so it would surprise me to see a Scagg/Gordon/Nickel Creek/Robinella tent. Ben Folds I am thinking is getting a closing spot as well.
As far night goes I still see Oysterhead doing a late night with Disco/Umphrey's/ MMJ and Blackalicious/Lyrics Born..unless one of these is moved to say. Maybe MMJ..who knows. Its hard what it will be until everyone is announced.

I kind of doubt they'll run Nickel Creek and Ricky Scaggs at the same time, too much genre conflict with very few bluegrass acts out there this year. Look for Nickel Creek to kick the day off on the Which Stage, and Ricky Scaggs to play a big tent later in the afternoon.
I see this scenario as likely:
What Stage:
Robert Randolph and the Family Band Elvis Costello Tom Petty
Which Stage:
Nickel Creek Bright Eyes G. Love and Special Sauce Oysterhead
This Tent:
Seu Jorge Donovan Frankenreiter World Party Death Cab for Cutie
That Tent:
The Cat Empire Andrew Bird Cat Power Ben Folds
The Other Tent:
Robinella Devendra Banhart Band Bettye Levette Mike Gordon and Ramble Dove Ricky Scaggs
I hate to say it, but I'm afraid that Ben and Death Cab are going to clash and that's going to kill me. I'd love to see Bright Eyes play an earlier set, Ben Folds mid-afternoon, and Death Cab pre-headliner. Will it happen?
I actually think that the date breakdown we have in the schedule thread might be remarkably accurate this year. The number of bands for each day breaks down pretty perfectly as is, and if you fill out a hypothetical schedule (I confess I've done this.....more than once. Yes I'm an impatient dork), it fills out almost perfectly in terms of the number of bands per day.
I'll stick to my Friday thoughts for now:
I've noticed that year's past have always had the main stage starting around 3:00 rather than noon, with only two acts preceding the headliner. I'll assume they stick with this year, and that Oysterhead will be late night. Although some people seem to disagree, I think Costello is an obvious choice for the slot before Petty. I'm really not sure where else they would put him. Anyway, I'm thinking:
Main Stage: RRFB Costello Petty
2nd stage: Steel Pulse Ben Folds Bright Eyes DCFC
If you assume Oysterhead, Umph/Bisco, Quannum MCs, MMJ late night (obviously a huge and probably not entirely accurate assumption), that leaves exactly twelve acts from the schedule thread list, which fits perfectly into three tents, four acts per tent (this has been the scheduling pattern with increasing consistency over the years). The Preservation Hall tent is supposed to be going all day and would be a fourth tent.
The twelve tent acts in this scenario would be: Seu Jorge Devandra Banhart Donovan Frankenreiter G. Love
World Party Nickel Creek Mike Gordon Ricky Skaggs
Andrew Bird Bettye Lavette Robinella Cat Power
This is admitedly a bleak landscape for the strictest definition of the "jam band" genre (with only RRFB and Mike standing out), but for me its a landmine of conflicts. If it shakes out this way, and conflicts allow, I'll be checking out Mike, Devandra Banhart and Seu Jorge for sure and hoping to catch some Ben Folds and Bright Eyes, while wishing I could see some of every single act.
EDIT: OK I (somewhat randomly) broke mine down into three tents because Attornaroo did. I think your list looks more plausible and thought out than mine Attornaroo, but a couple nitpicky points: I don't think any tent has ever had five acts in the daytime (not including between set DJs), I think Cat Empire might be playing Thursday as their tour site says because of the math, and where's Steel Pulse?

ka mai,
We're on the same page here. (I think I fill out a new schedule every day). I've seen the potential for Steel Pulse to open up Which Stage as well, as reggae just works better outdoors. If this does shake out this way, I'll spend my whole damn day outside which will be warm to say the least. I have a hard time seeing Ben and Death Cab playing outside for some reason. They both seem like tent bands to me. What say you to that?
I'm still not sure Oysterhead is going to play late night. I'd probably miss them if they did, as MMJ takes precedence over everything but Radiohead.

i agree about friday. with good scheduling i can already say that friday will be my greatest 1 day lineup ever! im really dreading the latenight situation. i have a feeling i mihgt miss lyrics born for oysterhead and umph/bisco. i really wanna see lyrics born but i cant skip oh and um/bisco to see him. i am really hoping to see some changes in the schedule. i think they should play later. the dead and marsvolta showed that people will still show up at 3 or 4 am. i also think you might see beck as a double headliner kinda thing on satrday. i forget who but onf the radioheads looked up all of radio heads past festival shows and they only do about 2 hours(1.7 hours the shortest and 2.1 hours the longest). so that leaves plenty of time for beck on the mainstage. sunday is lookn qute good as well... dont forget the codetalkers at 1 with their record release party. that should be great and should definetly be tossed into sundays jammy goodness.
What is the census on Sunday Main stage? We know Codetalkers have the one slot..maybe Codetalkers, Bela,Bonnie and Phil with Moe closing out the 2nd. Though the played the main stage in 04..so not sure how that will work. Bela could close out the 2nd stage as well.
2nd stage: Codetalkers Refugee All Stars Common Bela Fleck
Leaving 10 artists for the tents: ????? The Streets Atmosphere Superjam
deadmen & elephantboy Sonic Youth Son Volt Stephen Malkmus
Jerry Douglas M. Doughty Soulive Shooter Jennings
Notice that when you throw the Superjam in there, there's only room for one more artist in the tents, which suggests again that our date information might be pretty close to right and there's not much room for additions(?).
I'm sure I'm pretty off with these, the tent breakdowns especially aren't very thought out and aren't too plausible as I have them. The more I listen to Refugee All stars, the more I hope they get the big field full of people in the sunshine they deserve (for my tastes, their stuff is the best reggae I've ever heard that doesn't involve Peter Tosh or Bob Marley). I know the Codetalkers info mentioned "main stage", and I think the 1:00 info is definitely confirmed from the band, but I think it was worded in a way that could have been understood as "one of the main stages", which could mean the main stage, one of the two main stages, or one of the five main stages depending on your perspective. For Common, we don't even have a date yet, so that's just a guess on my part. The moe. spot does seem kind of redundant from the '04 schedule, but I can't think of where else they might end up. Maybe we have their day wrong?

Sunday is gonna be nasty with conflicts for me ... Moe., Lesh, Bela Fleck, Malkmus, Doughty, Sonic Youth, Soulive... I can' imagine missing any of them

for me i think sunday is the day that will work out best for me. my main worry is probably shooter jennings. i have a feeling he may conflict with bonnie raitt or moe and i really wanna see those shows. but shooter jennings is really good. and i dont like country hes just that good
im sorry guys but i see bands like death cab, bright eyes, ben folds, and sonic youth in tents not main stages...with the exception of death cab really cause theyre all mtv'ed out of it and laguna beach trendyness.
Thanks for this discussion. It's why I'm not getting too wracked about the next round of additions.
Ageed, I'm more excited for them to announce the schedule than additional artists. At this point I wanna know exactly who I am actually going to be able to see and who I will just hear stories of.
Last year we got 23 "stage" shows, and I suppose 60 or so acts in tents. I went with the simple rationale, the first 23 artists or so on the line-up will recieve big stages. Since the addition of the Codetalkers, I get the feeling that was probably some bad rationale.
As far as Ben Folds goes, I'm almost positive he'll get the second stage, he's going to have a big crowd. I'm undecided on Bright Eyes and DCFC. Both have grown in popularity tremendously over the years, and will likely have semi-large audiences. It would make sense to me that they follow one another, or at least play on the same size stage. I'm hoping they both get a tent, as I think it would be more condusive for Bright Eyes, as well as saving room on the big stages (I don't anticipate I'll see either of their sets, Bright Eyes if I'm free, but certainly not DCFC). However, the size of their audience (at least DCFC) might force a stage show. Frankly, I hope they put DCFC up against Costello, and Bright Eyes on around RRFB. I know this would be a bad conflict for some people; but these are very different artists, and it would make sense to polarize the genres. I'm praying for a Friday mainstage that goes something like RRFB -Costello - Petty; I'd park myself DFC all day, urinating in a jar if need be. Then I jet over to Oysterhead late nite. I could accept missing Ben Folds, G Love, LB, and Blackalicious if its for a day like that.
I don't think there is anyway that Ben Folds gets a tent. He'll be on the Which stage, in the Jack Johnson/J5 slot of last year. He is much too big for a tent.
Also Friday is going to be musical bliss and a nightmare, there will be very difficult decisions to be made..

So long as Ump/Bisco isnt up against Oysterhead i'll m anage, i have no problem making any other sacrifice to see my bands but that would absolutely tear me in half....
Look, I love Ben as much as anyone--- but Ben has been playing auditoriums at best, and medium-sized clubs at worst right now. His name alone could not fill an amphitheater in the same way that Jack Johnson has in the past two years.
Maybe the J5 slot stage-wise, but I would still say tent.

have you been to any ben folds concerts? he sells out everyone i have ever been to. outdoor shows included where there are thousands of people. i am sure ben folds will be on the second stage. he is going to have a huge turnout. personaly i dont really care where he plays i will be up front. but i cant see him pleaying anywhere ohter then the second stage. if ben folds dosent get as big of a stage as dcfc ill cry. if i were making my own schedule ben folds would be on the mainstage for sure

Uhh that might work at Coachella or something, but I don't think it would be a good decision to have him at the main stage at Bonnaroo. Would be a waste of space. I do enjoy Ben Folds, and there is a good chance I might catch his show.
my guess is death cab and folds will both be on stage #2, along with nickel creek and either steel pulse or g. love. i see bright eyes "headlining" one of the larger tents, right after cat power.
Oysterhead and Ump/Bisco will almost undoubtedly both play Friday. Whether or not they're at the same time will be the deal breaker.
The best shows of bonnaroo are the late nights. I've seen some amazing bands during the day, but it's always the sickest bands pitted against each other at night. That is all you people should be worrying about. The day time stuff will sort itself out.
And yes, I've been to several Ben Folds shows. They have all been sell outs. But they were not all the size of a major amphitheater and even the ones that came close he was not the sole draw. And I've never seen Ben be the headliner on giant arena tours, except for possibly a single date or two in Europe or Australia.
And the big tents at Roo also hold "thousands of people" - including one that holds more than 10,000.

i truly didnt notice that it was you who had said that. but i will respond to any post i read. im not going to keep playing the flame game with you but i will respond to your more reasonable posts. i think he will get the second stage an you think a tent. good. thats conversation. if you have off topic comments for me about my postings then once again heres the thread.
ii think that he probably get joss stones spot from last year only with an hour and a half instead of an hour. i expect he will draw a larger crowd then joss did. alot of people have been waitng a long time to see mr folds at roo, just my opininon though

As for the Ben Folds factor... I hope for his sake that he is still popular enough for second-stage. But i feel that it's a relative argument based on what other second stage possibilities are. I merely think it is in the realm of possibility that he ends up in a tent if the announcements keep including headline-like bands.
