I'm not a Death Cab fan, but calling them trendy is a little harsh. Maybe some of their new fans are trendy, but they've been making music in this same vein for a while now.

Ok so i'll stop hating on death cab for a second. I just don't get it. Everyone I know thats into them wears dark clothing, is all depressed and sh.it, pops a buncha pills, is all IMO. Maybe thats just my boulder bias. But maybe its like that everywhere. I don't reall know
toubab krewe or moonshine still??? thats creating some issues for me. im thinking im gonna have to go see moonshine still. sucks though i really wanted to check out toubab krewe for the first time
Post by somwherbtween on May 23, 2006 14:18:03 GMT -5
I think I want to see toubab krewe. It seems that I've had a good amount of opportunities to see moonshine and this is the first time i get to see toubab. It's also two different types of music, so take your pick
dude didnt you say youd sell you ticket if OH wasnt late night? haha
glad the schedules up though, and only 2 or 3 conflicts that i care about. i was hopin for some additions though. guess greyboys REALLY not gonna be there :(
i try to never judge a band based on its fanbase. no matter how much i dislike certain "types" of people. i just think death cab is not good. sounds like everything else on the radio. but thats just my opinion. at least there wont be a bunch of people at the oysterhead show standing around unimpressed wondering when dcfc and radiohead are going to play

The people, the scene, the music, its all goes together. I'm not saying I dislike these people. I would just rather not associate myself with that type of scene.

g
i fifguerd id get called out on that. no surprise its by a buckeye ;) and i actually said id give it away. the only thing i can say on that subject is that i am full of sh.it!!!! dr john the night tripper negates the oysterhead thing. i would have been worse off if oysterhead was a saturday latenight. although i still think there is enough time to have an act between radio head and the latenight. there is 45 minutes of nothing before radiohead and there is probably an hour and a half (at least an hour) of nothing after radiohead. seems like an incredible waste of time to me to have all these bands conflicting and the having a couple sets worth of dead time

I don't really care, I'm just saying they've been around for a while. This "scene" has probably latched onto them recently, I'm guessing after Postal Service blew up.

this gives a lot of flexibility to radiohead...hopefully a longer set than scheduled...
well truthfully i dont know much deatcab. i downloaded it when the roo lineup hit and decided it wasnt for me. ive already got guster to fill my wuss rock spot.

juggernaut you read between the lines too much. I'm not going to the oysterhead show because its a one time deal, I'm going because I love their music and its the one chance to see them. If you like death cab more, have fun at their show. See you at Petty when their are no conflicts
ya man its not about how rare they are. but if your torn between two shows. and one is a one time only thing. and the other is touring to every teeny bopper venue in the country i go see the one time only show. besides grand pecking order and gris-gris are two of my all time favorite albums. i wouldnt pass up either of those shows for anything i can think of outside of an axl rose slash reunion
I kind of like the extra time after the Radiohead set. Let you get to the next show ealry or hit up camp real quick before all the action starts. As for the time before Radiohead, I don't get that, I guess you can get a bite to eat...

i'm kind of glad about the big time gap before the headliners. Plenty of time to get back to the camp site, drink a couple of beers, and head over to the main stage.

DCFC is actually high on my list. However, I'll have at least the first 45 minutes of Ohead and if it sucks like Trey's night set last year i'll have no internal conflict leaving. Either way I plan on seeing about half of each.
And yes, DCFC got popular after Postal Service and being aded to the soundtrack for the OC. They've been around since 1999 though so they're not exactly a one hit wonder. Superfly clearly likes to grab best in class for different genres.

I can tell you've never listened to DCFC...not only do they get very little (if any) radio play outside of college stations, they sound NOTHING like anything you hear on mainstream/ClearChannel radio. And that's not a statement on whether or not they music good or bad music...that's up to someone's opinion, but they are definitely NOT mainstream radio.
And for the record, I love Claypool -- I'm very very disappointed that he's playing in the Saturday afternoon traffic jam, competing with Beck, Cypress, etc. I LOVE me some Claypool Band, and Primus. I just don't dig live Oysterhead, at least not the "new" Oysterhead.
And just because it's maybe a one-time only thing doesn't mean anything. I'll see a show based on how much I'll like it, not how "rare" it will be.
The best part of this? How all of our problems stem from having too much awesome music to see. I feel like some spoiled kid trying to decide between a Lexus or Land Rover.

The misconceptions about DCFC on this thread are terrible. Wuss rock? Like Guster? Please, first of all, if all you've heard is Plans, listen to their older stuff. Plans is a great record imo, but not nearly their best and by far their most mainstream. Check out Transatlanticism, Photo Album or We Have the Facts. Brilliant album, and most definitely not "mainstream." This is original, creative music written by one of the best songwriters around. If it's not your cup of tea, fine. But, listen to it first.
i doubt that. from what ive seen they like to come out and do their planned out show and jet. no guests or super jams. i just think that is the show they put on. they seem pretty consistent with their set times. it seems to me that they could have been a saturday second stage latenight and we could have gotten someone that fills a whole headline spot for saturday. maybe something with more of a party festival feel to it.. just my opinion though
I JUST CAN'T DECIDE, MMW OR BECK?!?!?!?!??! AHHHHHH
i hear ya! thats a hard one. after hearing about beck and his not working gameboy show im leaning a little towards mmw. i know ill get a full set of dancing and jamming. with beck you might get half the show doing some gimmicky thing noone cares about. i hope he just plays and dosent get all goofy. even so its a super tough call
I really really liked Beck's cd Guero, but the two times I've seen him before that came out, I was really dissapointed... so I'm kind of leaning away from Beck at the moment.
ya i have been through the whole cutie debate before. i got plans. then i hjeard what you just said so i got transatlanaticism and it didnt do it for me either. just not my thing. i didnt mean to imply that guster and dcfc are the same. i like guster. it is more jammy and less whiney. imo. i just label them both as wuss rock in my own little world. but to each their own
Post by somwherbtween on May 23, 2006 14:55:44 GMT -5
all i've heard from death cab is their live music off of archive.org so my opinions are based on that, not their recorded albums. I really don't like their music, but if thats your thing, have fun at their show. I will be dancing my ass off at oysterhead enjoying that show
Post by skankinitslow on May 23, 2006 14:56:15 GMT -5
wow, IMO they did a great job with the scedual. minimal conflicts. good way to spread out the crowd for the late night shows, esp. friday with the hip hop tent, mmj, and um/db. but man "The Other Tent" is going to be CROWD CRAZY during um/db. i would have put them in a larger tent. whos got my mollies for the sasha set HOLY! i have a feelin the superjam is going to be mind blowing......

Fair enough, to each their own. Just letting you know I've seen both DCFC and Guster live, and DCFC jams more, at least live. They have certain songs they stretch out. I personally don't see how his voice (or lyrics?) are whiny, but again, to each their own.
Either way, this is a tough decision for me. I love Death Cab, I love Robert Randolph and I am really interested in seeing Oysterhead live. God damn.
while i've got no evidence of them jumping in on super jams, they have been moving towards a lot of collaboration with external groups over the last few years. I know two off the top of my head are Johnny working with Sigur Ros and Thom doing the duet with Bjork a few years back. I know there's plenty of others, but can't think of them at the moment.
I almost reacted to the request for a more "party festival feel" but then realized that you're halfway right. A lot of their songs are quite involved and emotional (please not another emo flame war), but others are just a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. For me, it'll be a party no matter what as it has been the last 3 times I've seen them.
I'm still holding out hope for some suprise appearances in the super jam, but I'm not letting my night revolve around those hopes. If it happens, I'll be running to that tent from wherever I am
