Days are long but the minds are gone In the factory -The Vines
The factory life is, if little else, good for providing ample time for thinking. Just blank the stare before some repetitive task and place the mind in a place kind enough to pass away the long hours. A fine choice of ruminations is something like the upcoming Bonnaroo festivale in Tennessee...the Great American Carnivale. Hands singed by burnt metal is not suitable for focused attention and so my mind leaves for the future, a weekend where every second invigorates with its floating zephyr vibe of pure intoxication. For the merry troupe of Wisco weirdos making this particular trip into the Mid-South circus/zoo the show will start sometime on the afternoon of Friday the Sixteenth. A brand new mother is making her second consecutive voyage to the Roo and as short a time of separation between her and her beautiful daughter cancels out whatever is going on Thursday...and one less day under that torturous Tennessee sun cant be bad for our health. Friday afternoon offers a slew of promising shows with Ben Folds, Seu Jorge, Donovan Frankenreiter, Devendra Banhart, and G Love & the Special Sauce. At four in the pm it is time to get down to some serious business with the first really big performance of the weekend...Bright Eyes on the second stage. I saw Oberst and his buddies last January in Milwaukee...a very cool show that made me look forward to watching againand he is the only guy Ive ever seen smash his guitar on stage (Im not counting the time a Shadows Fall guitarist threw a guitar at a roadie since it didnt actually break).
After Bright Eyes will be a couple abbreviated glimpses of Ricky Skaggs (since hes a legend and all that) and Oysterhead (since they play gigs like every five years). After getting these necessities out of the way it will be time to go back to that second stage for Death Cab For Cutie. Death Cab has gotten some of the same heat that Modest Mouse got last year. First of all is the claims of sellout for moving to a major label, second is the dubious fact that they are not a jamband. None of this should matter with so many good songs. Tom Petty is one of those legends that followed in the trail that old Bob Dylan burned so many years ago. He is in the same category of brilliance as Dylan himself, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Lou Reed and I have seen them all (counting the time I think I met Lou Reed on a sidewalk in the East Village) but Petty. That changes with the Friday headline show. Petty and his Heartbreakers have enough to fill a solid three hour set and, just to add a little something extra, Stevie Nicks will be singing a few as well. Fridays marathon late-night shows will do their best to pound me into a coma. My Morning Jacket, a Roo staple, play three hours. Umphreys McGee and the Disco Biscuits kidnap a tent together until the sun gets around to rising. Best of all, Blackalicious, Common, and Lyrics Born share an all night hiphop tent.
Saturday morning will probably be slept through (unless the Sun of Doom wont allow it) to recover from the previous night of total madness. Nothing is really Absolutely Necessary on Saturday until five-thirty on the main stage but, if possible, before then will be options of the Magic Numbers, Grace Potter, Dungen, Steel Train, Elvis Costello, Buddy Guy, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Rusted Root, Gomez, and Jr Gong Damien Marley. Beck starts a huge evening in the mass crowd at the main stage. Beck will play from his extensive catalogue and shake his wacky whiteboy dance for an hour and a half. Then, at seven, the Saturday (and truly the entire weekend) headliner...Radiohead. With a new cd due out sometime next year they are playing a few dates in American theatres (Ebay tix are going for a mint) and one festival. New songs, classics, magical musical ambience, spastic Thom Yorke, and glowsticks dotting the blackening sky. Fun times. One more round of insane all-nighters will follow Radiohead. Dr John (as the Night Tripper), the Rebirth Brass Band, and Ian Nevilles Dumpstaphunk will represent NOLA...the Dresden Dolls, Balkan Beat Box, and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will mesmerize the braindead (myself included)...DJ Sasha spins some morning beats...and a mysterious SuperJam will rock another four-plus hours.
Sunday is the last day and will probably require a little sleeping-in as well. deadboy & the Elephantmen might be worth making it out of the tent for at two-thirty in the so-often blistering Tennessee afternoon. After that the decisions get pretty difficult before its time to go home (or at least to Knoxville, the first stop on the way home). Bela Fleck & the Flecktones...Matisyahu...Stephen Malkmus...The Streets...Son Volt...moe...Bonnie Raitt...Sonic Youth...Steve Earle...Atmosphere. One of those ten will be our headliner for the weekend as we will miss Phil Lesh & Friends two sets of Grateful Dead material.
Last year the best show of the entire weekend was Saul Williams and the year before it was Damien Rice. Of course, these we just my own personal opinions and thousands of people would probably disagree. I think the show of the year this year will be Radiohead but one of the many great things about Bonnaroo is that so many artists will have a chance to prove that prediction wrong. The bands get to spread their art, fans find new favorites, and people meet new fantastic people. A truly fine weekend.

hell yeah, saul williams rocked the hell out of that tent last year, and damien was super amazing the year before that standing in ankle deep water that lead right into the porta potties, but ive seen damien three times and that was the best in my opinion, and radiohead is going to be amazing this year, but in my opinion oysterhead is going tp rock the weekend

Yeah...going into '04 I expected the Dead to be my fave of the weekend, and last year I thought it would be Modest Mouse...Damien and Saul rendered both predictions incorrect. Thats one of the coolest things about Roo, so many bands with opportunities to surprise and amaze.

I had to miss a day of work at ye olde factory today due to some kind of terrible eye infection. I work twelve hour days so missing one is a big hit to the paycheck...and I want every penny for Bonnaroo! Thought itd be a good idea to re-read my own recent thoughts and maybe cheer myself up...it worked. I can hardly wait out these last days...and my damn eye better clear up soon!
Other people should consider typing a page or two of their thoughts goin into Roo and postin 'em here.
