Yea....I could see that Thom looked a little bored in Meeting People is Easy. Radiohead isn't one of those bands that you...sing to while they perform. Actually..I wouldn't know...I've never seen them. All I can say is....I will be in total awe...i'm sure....way too amazed to be singing. Everyone I know who has seen them in concert says it's almost a "religious experience". I did read that thom got pissed off because they were playing '15 step' and no one was clapping. I guess he figured that real RH fans would have already got that song down. So...everyone...let's not piss Thom off...let's learn the clap to '15 step'!!...lol
I can't help but sing on some of them. It'll piss me off if people are loud during songs like Exit Music though.
On the whole singing along concept, I think the singing along bothering Thom is more likely related to their feelings about Creep. It was their breakthrough track in the mainstream and I think in their eyes they don't want to be known as "that band that played that song Creep that was on the radio years ago."
That said, I've been listening to the '06 London show a lot lately and it's very clear that the crowd does sing along. Karma Police is a perfect example of this. Starting with the first chord, the crowd is on it, every word. It even sounds like Thom let them start and then joined in a bit.
I read one review on ateaseweb a few weeks ago about an American fan who went to Europe for the first show. He commented that the most amazing difference is how into the songs everyone is there. Radiohead is "the rock band" in Europe and people really know the songs through and through. He said everyone was singing.
At one show, can't remember which but I think it was Houston for Kid A tour, Thom did the holding out the mic boom over the crowd to provide some sample material for Johnny to play with. I thought it was pretty impressive.
Every show I've seen, they seem really into interacting with the crowd. The only exception I can think of was Thom swallowing the bitter pill that Clearchannel sponsorship was the only way they could play in St. Loius and bitching about the sea of VIPs in the front row. He dedicated There There to the people on the lawn.
As for the comments about 15 step and people clapping, I'll be going bonkers during that song, it's one of my favorite new tracks

i saw them last week and there was 2 kinds of people there, the ones who would sing along and dance like idiots (me) and the people who would just stand there almost comotose just taking it in. i have been in both camps at a rh show and they are both great in thier own way..i just cant stand people who are always screaming during the quiet songs (exit music, etc..) mainly because pointless screaming is different than singing along..plus it kills the bootlegs.
but i would never tell someone to not siing or have a good time..its a rock show for crying outloud..people (including the band) sometimes need to not take things so dang seriously (especially considering many of the people seeing them at roo are not hardcore fans, just there to have a good time and party..if you get worked up about people singing along you are going to have a bad night.)
Oh...I'll be singing along...in my own quiet way. And...I will be flailing around like crazy...dancing to most of it I'm sure. I'm...most worried about the screamers...like you said. Or the people who sing too damn loud...and get in the way of me hearing Thom. He's a bit quiet. Everything I've seen...on Meeting people is easy or elsewhere...the band is loud....the crowd is loud...Thom is soft spoken. I want to hear him! As long as I can hear him singing....I'll be happy. I can't help but sing the words...at any concert...especially if I know them well. But I generally keep it to lip syncing. I'm so damn excited....I leave in a week...every day is going by SO SLOW! I want a magical 7 day sleeping pill....sleep through this damn week.
Everything I've seen...on Meeting people is easy or elsewhere...the band is loud....the crowd is loud...Thom is soft spoken.
That's where the fun concept of sound reinforcement comes in. Thom may be soft spoken, but he's got a mic in front of him and a professional (extremely professional from my experience) sound engineer working on making sure it's coming out right from the giant PA system. Meeting people is easy is a DVD that you've likely seen on a home theater system of some kind. It's much, much different booming from a giant PA system, I promise

i agree..nothing can prepare you for the sonic explosion that is radiohead live..i dont care how good a bootleg or dvd is, they are just one of those bands that need to be exprerienced live..
that being said, i thought thoms vocal levels were a little low at points, but his energy makes up for it..he has been gettin down on stage.

radiohead is amazing live. i think the crowd at bonnaroo will be unique, not everyone there will know every single word to every single song, BUT people will be blow away and allow the music to take over. i think the band will be able to see what a great audience we will be. i am a radiohead junkie, but i think that people who have barely heard them can enjoy the hell out of the show. dance for sure, especially during 15 step, idioteque, etc. its SO much fun to dance like someone might if they'd never seen anyone else dance.

No EIIRP tonight. First time since it hasn't been played since it was introduced (excluding solo performances).
Down is the New Up was played for the first time though. Brief description of it...."Thom is beatboxing with Shaker while Jonny has drum set, mid way through the song, Thom moves to piano while Jonny remains on the drums. " I'm sure we'll hear a bootleg of it soon enough.
It sounded a little rough, but I definately like the idea. It's different, in a very good way. Don't really know what you'd compare it to. I like the little drum jam at the end.
So, I thought this kind of fit this thread. It's a remix of Creep with Fred From "Fitter Happier" on lyrics. I got it off the remix disc "Me and This Army" some cool stuff on that disc, but I really love this track especially
Well, now that you opened the remix can of worms ...
I've got the attempted Paul Oakenfold remix of Street Spirit on white label vinyl. I can say I 100% understand why he somehow could never get a license to release it.
I did hear a white label remix of Everything in Its Right Place a while back that seemed more authentic to the actual song, but can't remember any details about it (I was broke at the time and couldn't pick up a copy).
Any of you looking for "all" the new songs that have been played out there there's a torrent of just them so you don't have to go looking for all the bootlegs if you're just interested in new material

....uh yeah.....and if youre intrested someone has posted the show for download somewhere around here, and its damn good too!
They should play Creep. It is a great song and it would get everyone involved. Especially those that are not big Radiohead fans. Also I have seen them play it twice live and both times Thom really seemed to like playing it. He really seemed to like how everyone sings along with him even though he changes the words up a little bit.
I may be wrong but I swore that they hated it when the crowd sings along, thats why they hardley ever play it...Its considered an insult in other countries to sing and yell while bands are expressing their souls onstage....I may be wrong but thats what I heard.
They hate playing this song because it's success nearly destroyed them. While contractually obligated to tour for nearly two years, they were unable to record any of the new material they were writing, and found this extremely frustrating. During one show, the crowd kept shouting for them to play Creep, even though they'd already played it. It was the only song they were known for, completely over-emphasised, and they found this very stifling. They grew to resent the song. And it was this drive to get away from it that brought us OK Computer.
A good book to read on Radiohead is "Radiohead-Hysterical and Useless" by Martin Clarke. It gives lots little tid bits, as well as some pretty good insight into how they actually became such world-class musicians.

i dont know about all of those 'facts' about the song, creep. contractual obligation? how would one song, before it was popular, per se, have a band sign a contract to play that song... i dunno, its all rumor.
the best one i've heard is that johnny hated the song and that the guitar noise thats so uber popular was his attempt to sabatoge the song. duh-nah duh-nah... cause i'm a creep

It is a fact. The contractual obligation I was referring to was the tour they were to perform for two years. They could therefore, not record any new material in the studio.
