At the risk of sounding naive, I just don't understand how marijuana can be illegal when there are other substances that are responsible for more crimes and deaths that are legal. I've never taken an active role in trying to get it legalized so I don't know the reasoning as to why it's illegal in the first place.
I totally agree. I just don't get it. I personally don't smoke, and my ex husband is a 24/7 pot-head so I don't really condone it because of my personal experience, but I really think it should be legal.

Yes, it does show quite a bit. Most politicians come from a secluded bubble of the rich white world, and dont realize there is much past that. Unfortunately, even for the few noble politicians there are, they have the same concerns. Its not like the voters think too far in the future either (hence the idea of "pocketbook voting"). If you were a politician who truly was trying to help your town, city, state or country, it still makes sense that you need to get re-elected. How are you going to help if you aren't elected? Its sort of a built-in problem. That's why Supreme Court judges have no terms, so they can actually make decisions based on whats right, not on whats goign to get them re-elected. Talking about politics upsets me because i feel like its a lose-lose situation in so many ways. As i've said ten times today, the only thing we can really do is try and educate everyone, then slowly good changes will come.
I had a similar conversation with my father last night about EZPass. He commented on how convenient having the EZPass express lanes are. Some people refuse to buy it still because that means that our cars can be tracked.
I too held off on buying one of those devices back in Illinois and am doing my best (or using my girlfriend's ) to avoid picking one up out here in Colorado. While I'm obviously not trafficking heroin or anything, I have similar beliefs as your father.
Good luck dmbfan! I hope you are able to find a new job and place that makes you and your wife happy! It would be nice to look forward to visiting Manchester instead of disliking living there year-round.
aquarium, it is kinda creepy knowing that out there somewhere someone can look up where I've driven. It's kind of funny the sacrifices we make for modern conveniences.

My dad's friend refused to get one because he thought they were going to give him speeding tickets for getting from one place to another too quickly. Its theoretically possible, but the logistics would be hell. I'm a big fan of privacy, but i'm also a big fan of convienence. I love EZPass! BUT, if there were some things I was doing that I didn't want peopel to know about, ticket lane all the way.

Hey thanks for the vote of luck, but unfortunately, it is not something we are actively pursuing at the moment.
We are pretty much planted here for now! We are on the "Dave Ramsey kick" right now and are trying to become debt free.
Maybe in a couple of years when the finances are in order we will be looking to make a move. I have only 7 more years until my youngest is off to college and I think we will stick around til then.
Besides, if we did that, we wouldn't have much to bitch about! ;D
Fortunately we don't have to worry about speedpass type deals because, as far as I know, TN doens't any toll roads.
I gotcha, I moved back home after college and am trying to make a dent in my debt before I get my own place and make more bills for myself. It seems like the debt will never go away, but I guess the best we can do is be reasonable and organized!

It's so true and sometimes it makes me queasy just thinking about how it's such a foregone conclusion for the vast majority of this world.
Tell me about it! Most of the time I pay my bills, do what I gotta do and go on my merry way. But right around this time of year when it comes time to "lock in those low rates" for my loans, I'm foreced to review what I owe and it's nauseating. I try not to even look at my credit card bills, I just pay and look away, haha.
I can promise you one thing guys, if you stick with it, you can get out!
We have been on a, pay off everything, finance nothing kick for about 3.5 - 4 years now and are almost there, as far as paying off everything (except the mortgage).
I am 33 and Cheryl is 31 (married 14 yrs, do the math!) and we have never been finacially stable, we are almost there. We have no credit cards any more, or balances, both vehicle are paid. It takes time patience and perseverance!
In about 6 - 8 more month is will all be gone and then I will put 15% in 401k and we are gonna start hammering our saving account. The goal is to retire at 45, 50 is probably more realistic!
dmbfan, that's so good to hear! There is hope! I don't expect the loans to go away for at least a decade or two, but I've been told that can be considered "good debt," (is there such a thing??) As for the credit cards, they're getting paid slowly. Those damn credit card companies are impossible though, after paying the bills on time for at least a year I called and asked to have them lower my rate. They said they can't because since there has been no activity on the card they see that as a sign of financial stress. How absurd!
Retiring at 45-50 is a wonderful thing if you can do it, good luck! I would love to be able to do that. We all have to start somewhere
It is just such a slow process. I have reached a point where I could care less about my credit rating, because I do not finance anything anymore, and you know whats funny, my credit is better now than it has ever been, AFTER I stopped giving a sheet.
I hope to retire that early, but you know life has such a funny habit of getting in the way of your plans!
The road financial freedom has been long slow and windy and we ain't to the end yet, but after 4 years, we can finally see the end, maybe!
The best thing anyone can do, is cut up those damn credit cards RIGHT NOW and never use them again!!!
Avarice IS NOT the root of all evil, credit card companies are!!!!
Oh, and non-activity IS NOT a sign of financial distress, it is a sign of business distress for them.
Why would they lower your rate, if your not increasing your debt with them, that would take money out of thier pockets, because all your doing is lower your principal balance.
lower principal balance + lower interest = less money for the card company!
We have good heads on our shoulders, we'll be alright Especially as long as there's always a little bit o' extra cash for music...
Amen!!!
CAN I GET AN AMEN?????????
ain't it funny how sometimes you get to talking about something and completely take over a thread and end up talking about something completely different that what the thread was about? ;D ;D ;D
Hhaha does that make me look like an inforoo loser? I think I'm every other post in a few threads now. Work is so slow! I sit here and refresh, refresh, refresh, haha...

I agree that it shouldn't have ever been made illegal. Or, better yet, maybe alcohol should be illegal too! (Not that i'd ever want that, of course.) Like I said before, there's jsut too much hypocrisy, and everything is a web of lies at this point so its practically impossible to fix it without creating lots of problems at least for a little while. And politicians by nature can't think any further than their term, so its hard for them to have any urge to do these things. And then think about other things. Its impossible to test if MJ is still effecting your body, so how are they going to work DUIs? And then what about, say, teachers? There would then still have to be tons of professions that would have to drug test you, because there's no way parents would let their kids be taught by "reefers." It would just create so many problems. Simply just saying its illegal unfortunately simplifies a lot of things.
They already can bust you for a DUI for thc metabolites in your system. so that joint to smoked 2 weeks ago could make that accident you got into today, while sober, grounds for a DWI/DUI and possibly worse if someone was hurt.

You COULD be busted for a DUI with something like that, though its never happened to anyone I've ever known. I've heard of a few people getting it becuase they were caught smoking in the car, or somethign like that, but never for simply testing positive to a drug test. You'd have to do something that really pissed off Mr. Policeman and Mr. Judge to get that sort of treatment.
They can do that? I had no idea. But how much is it actually enforced? It's in no way reasonable to believe that a joint smoked weeks ago caused an accident days later.

i totally agree - however, the fact that it can happen is disturbing...

I agree. If they ever come up with a way to test to see how recently its been in your system i'd say legalization/decriminalization would be more likely. That being said, i doubt there's many people pushign to come up with this technology because "nobody but potheads would benefit".
