RHCP new album is really funky, a lot more so then there other stuff, and if they played mostly off that i would definatly not mind them having a headlining spot. But i also dont think theyd have the wow factor of a radiohead or pearl jam.
He didn't play last year but Ray LaMontagne's profile has been raised quite a bit since Roo 05. (As I type he's on Austin City Limits.) He's now supporting an excellent new album and is deserving of a larger slot this year. If I remember correctly, he played at a pretty inopportune time last time.
Just checked ... he played opposite Allman Bros, Herbie Hancock, Bela Fleck and Benevento Russo Duo w/Mike Gordon. (And in the period leading up the Dave Matthews Band's headlining slot.) Not the best time to be tucked away at "The Other Tent"

As far as the Chili Peppers go Id like to see em, but I saw them with the Foo Fighters a while back and the Foo Fighters were bad ass and much better, but the Peppers were good too, a lotta jammin with Flea and Frusciante...2 of the best
RHCP have been around long enough to catch everyone's flack. I saw them once in an arena-type venue, and they brought the funk as well as the antics. I certainly don't believe that you can blame the woodstock '99 fiasco on them. Alot of people want to rag on them for their incorporation of their slower stuff, using words like sellouts, etc. I think they should be credited with making it OK to have some power ballad material next to some hardrockin' funk. They have been through some rough stuff, and in my opinion, have come through it with some grace. Haven't heard the latest double album yet, but I certainly grooved to "Californication" for a bit of time. And anyone who really wants to credit them with the rough crowd that they have been grouped with ought to give up listening to music and and join the crusade to end violent video games and movies cuz they cause folks to act violently. Not trying to step on anyone's toes here, I just can't buy into the premise that life imitates art. especially to the extent that said art should be avoided or banned.
There is a reason that RHCP have attained the popularity they have. At one time, they were pioneers of a hardcore movement. Then, they conquered the radio. Now, i believe it is their challenge to negotiate the two. And I believe they are handling it well. Travelling a road so long, you're bound to pick up some chucklehead fans as well as plenty of haters.
I don't know if their egos could handle a non-headliningg spot, but I see them as a great Saturday preheadliner spot. Or even Friday at the same time for that matter. Or even in the latenight Mars Volta sorta spot. They've done it with horns, they've done it in just their socks. But one thing for sure, they've outlasted the hype. Props for that alone in this day and age. And I'd much rather deal with their typical fan, than Tool's or Incubus's ... .... but maybe I'm just showing my age !

isaac, I remember that the Flecktones and Nickel Creek were the two confirmations before the announcement. the Beck/Petty/Radiohead info might also have begun as a confirmation, but I heard it as a very likely rumor. In fact, if we could just track down where that info originally came from... I think we'd find some gold at the end of that rainbow. (stupid analogy?)
in my opinion, MMJ has blown up since this past Bonnaroo. They had a fairly large fanbase prior to roo 06, but since then they have begun playing 3-4000 seat theatres and even arenas. I could see them in a Bela Fleck like slot from last year.
Eh, I heard the same thing about Radiohead last year.
Maybe I am along on thinking the RHCP could pull it off though.
Those radiohead fans were hardcore. My hat's are off to them for being so dedicated though. To me roo just wouldn't be the same sitting in the same spot all day. Then again they were all up close for one of the most (if not the most) mindblowing sets of the festival.
My girlfriend camped out because she was a huge Beck fan and she stayed on for Radiohead. For me, though, it's just not worth it. I'd rather catch a few songs from a bunch of different artists in that setting. Plus, you know, go to the bathroom and eat dinner : )
I ended up seeing 36 acts when all was said and done in addition to other "attractions" last year. In retrospect, the constant travel between artists contributed to the blur that is bonnaroo as well as a pair of swollen legs. For memory's sake as well as my physicality, I'll go back to picking a few must sees each day, catching whole sets when possible, and wandering when the bug hits me. I rarely camp out for a good spot, though. Rather, I just move up and fill in the gaps when folks move on.
Props on the Ray Lamontagne mention cdevaney. That guy has real soul in him, and I think you're right in that he has grown in size since Bonnaroo 2005. He would be a great performer to see, any time of the day.
Steve, your idea about going back and tracking down last year's source is a good one. I don't remember one source in particular, though, just a myriad of places. The bigger music blogs will probably have stuff starting after the new year, or some performers may slip up and post something on their tour schedule. Pollstar had lots of early information for Austin City Limits, so hopefully they'll pop up with some Bonnaroo stuff.
My Morning Jacket has increased in size, I haven't found anything about the headlining saturday at Langerado though. Maybe I'm just incompetent in handling flash sites. Their tour opening for Pearl Jam was pretty big though, although I don't remember if that was before or after Bonnaroo. A similar set up at Roo, with MMJ leading into Pearl Jam would satisfy me endlessly.
And about to camp out or not - I'm in agreement with you guys that it's a totally personal thing.
For some people, it's their one chance to get the best spot they can fight for (for) a favorite artist. At a festival you're in control of your own spot, whereas oftentimes only the very lucky will get a front row/area seat at an arena show. I've met lots of people who have done that at ACL waiting for Coldplay or such because it's nearly impossible to get equal seats at a regular venue.
I prefer to find artists that I know I enjoy and relax and enjoy full sets. However, there are gonna be times where you don't really have a preference, and that's when the full beauty of a festival comes out, as everyone says those surprises. Even better is someone you see in a little tent becoming big or getting a break after you see them. At ACL this year a friend and I were stumbling around and wandered into the tent, the only seated area and the second smallest stage, and found Ian McLagan and the Bump Band. It ended up being one of my favorite shows of the whole festival, being able to sit in the shade and listen to some sort of blues/rock/60's pop hyrbrid from a couple hundred feet away. The whole show was great and afterwards I was able to walk right up to the stage and talk to the band. We also stumbled across Guster, who in my opinion are very enjoyable and have a very pleasing early afternoon sound.

i think it's high time for the Arcade Fire to play Roo. I would like to see them in a Bright Eyes or Death Cab like setting, but on sunday. If the Sunday mainstage will be dominated by mostly jam bands (which is asolutely fair) then i say Sunday's which stage lineup should consist of more indie bands (i hate using labels). I'd also love to see Band of Horses open up Which stage on one of the days of the fest.
Kind of off topic, but speaking of getting a good spot for artists, i will never try to get close at What Stage again. Last year the people around me and myself nearly died in between the Costello and Beck rush. I wasn't even crazy close, maybe 15-20 rows back. I'm suprised no one got seriously hurt during the stampede for Radiohead.
I think the Arcade Fire would fit in well. Whereas they are definitely more of an indie band, they also write gorgeous songs, are excellent instrumentalists, and put on amazing live shows. I think they would not only make a good group of people happy who already knew about them, but that they'd win over a lot of people. They do have a new album coming out, and if it's anything like the first then if they aren't huge then it's a real injustice.
I've gone through a very similar thing at Austin City Limits several times. I wasn't really close for Coldplay in 2005, but when they came on there was a huge push. It's weird because ACL audiences are usually very calm but there was a group of fratboys who had smuggled in a fifth so it wasn't the best group to be near. Also, when John Mayer came on this year it was crazy. I like the guy, and he's got some neat songs, but nothing he does it worth pushing or being rude for. One particular girl literally put her shoulder on me and pushed me two or three feet over so her and her friends could get into the tiny pocket in front of us. It's kinda hard to enjoy a performance as much when someone treats you like you're worthless to see them. We ended up leaving after 6 or 7 songs.

The Langerado site has the list of artists for each day (but not times) if you click on "tickets" and then "single day tickets". In there you can choose buy single day tickets and they have the list of who is playing on what day so single day buyers know what day go. MMJ is listed at the top for Saturday night.

I think the Racontuers have a good chance at being there as well as the Decemberists. Both bands came into the spot light last year. Gnarls also has a real good chance, thou personally I don't enjoy them much.
Really its so hard to say cause the Roo has such a wide spectrum of bands. Sometimes you get little bands that are, well, little and not heard of. Thank about Be Your Own Pet last year, very small band a few EP's and a full length. Radio play in my town but we have a real independent radio station.
I would really love to see Arcade Fire there. I have watched there shows streamed on the Blue Room and they were awesome. I think there new album will have them "Gettin' Big"
