I thought this thread would spark an interesting debate. Both Umphrey's McGee and My Morning Jacket have Bonnaroo to thank in part for their popularity. Not to say that either band wouldn't be popular without 'Roo, but each has benefitted greatly from their past Bonnaroo performances. Each has also been a staple in the Bonnaroo lineup for years to the point that the two have come to define what 'Roo is all about.
Here's my question (it's a two parter!): 1. Which of these bands better represents Bonnaroo? 2. Which of these bands is more likely to headline the festival first?
My vote goes for My Morning Jacket. Their set last year was one of the best of the weekend (and second only to Radiohead's for me). Now for your opinions!
1. MMJ. 2. MMJ will headline in the near future because they have proven themselves over and over again and they appeal to the Jam community, the Indie kids and pretty much everything in between.
My vote is for My Morning Jacket to headline first, and I think they're more indicative of what Bonnaroo is.
I think they'll headline first because they are headlining saturday night of Langerado, which isn't near as big as Bonnaroo, but it's a start and the other headliners are past Roo top dogs.
They are also more of the Bonnaroo band because, as iknow said, they have more of a crossover appeal. They are with the roots of the jamband community that Roo is founded on, and are also a part of it's forward progress.
That being said, Umphrey's does rock and I think that in time they too could headline. I'll hope for both.

My Morning Jacket by far and away represent the festival more. They are almost a bridge between the hipster and hippie worlds. They are accepted by both. That being said, UM are more just for the jam crowd.
Anyone who went last year already made this choice, as MMJ and UM were playing against each other late night. I was at MMJ, and for me it was the best show of the weekend (Radiohead being number 2).
MMJ will be headlingin shows, including Bonnaroo within their next 2 albums. UM will never headline Bonnaroo. They will get big, just never quite that big.
I love both bands, they both rock. But I dont forsee them "headlining" Bonnaroo. Look at all the bigger bands that havn't headlined, Govt Mule, Primus, Allmans,SCI. I could see them on the main stage in the future but not headlining. But personally I would rather keep on seeing the late night shows in the tent. There seems to be so much more energy at the late shows. It didnt seem right in 2005 with them playing in the daytime. But I gotta say Umphreys is my choice
damn. i dont even see a comparison. i cant get into mmj at all. i sat through their roo set in 04 i belive. maybe 05. and it was a test for me to stay for it all. they put me to sleep. and alot of people say that mmj was the best show at roo. but thats because they were at mmj and not at the umph show. i think umphreys will be headlining soon. i dont know if it will be before mmj or not but it should be. imo. they rock more. they jam more. for me they are the best show out there. but its just much more my type of music. and as far as contributing to the scene. just look at the amount of shows they each play. umphreys must play 10 times as as many show as mmj. and they play more festies too. id say its an easy call.

I wish I could have seen the umphrees show, but we skipped because I absolutely loathe the disco biscuits. I saw them on Beale and they played the same four-chorded trance sequence for forty-five minutes. No solos. Just chords. Not my scene at all.

Ding Ding Ding! You got that stated absolutely right.

i know people claim MMJ was the best show of the weekend, but i didn't go to it because i was at Umph, but Umphrey's was defnintely the best show of the weekend for me (maybe second to moe.)
i notice that most people say 1. radiohead, 2. MMJ for best shows of 06 i hated MMJ in 05 and radiohead was my biggest disappointment of the weekend
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
ya i noticed the radiohead mmj thing too. although i thought radiohead was great. but i think its the hipsters loving it and also overestimating the jam communities like of mmj. im not saying noone likes them. they are good. just not for me. but all of the jam fans were at umph. amd i know very few people that enjoy mmj. but i know alot of peopole do. just noone i know. i just cant figure it out. ive listened to there roo set to see what tthe fuss is all about. i didnt want to judge them off of a daytme show at roo. but the 06 show does nothing for me either. the new album did nothing for me. i think mmj is at the top of their rise and umph is just starting out. 10 years from now i think umph will be the biggest band in the scene. and mmj will probably be doing something elses. just my thoughts.

well then who will be????? somebodys gotta headline 12 years from now. i doubt its going to be wsp, trey, and the dead. umph definitely sits at the top of the list for future headliners in my view. especially seeing how they practically are headlining now. but if not them or mmj im curious to see who you think will.

I think mmj represents more and is more likely to headline just because they have a wider appeal. I greatly prefer um. I also think mmj has made a lot of their name off of bonnaroo, a lot more so then um. For um its basically just another show, at a sweet venue, they put on plenty of good shows other places, but the only mmj show you really hear about is at bonnaroo.
I tried to see UM's late night last year but the friggin arcade had the base pumping so loud it bled all over the sound. Why they put them in The Other Tent I'll never understand. So I went to MMJ's show and it was, in my opinion, very mediocre. The problem I have with them is that they try to make every song into some big epic performance even though they're really just using the same chords over and over again. I think they should be at Bonnaroo, but I wouldn't go to any festival based on their drawing power alone.
Well my handle on here pretty much says who I'm gonna pick. I think MMJ would be more likely to headline in the near future, they just have that mass appeal and are more accessible to people who aren't familiar with the material. I'd take Umphrey's over them any day of the week personaly, their musicianship is unmatched and just blows me away every show. I just don't think the casual listener will enjoy Umphrey's as much because there is too much to wrap your brain around. MMJ is pretty straight forward rock. Umphrey's, like a lot of jambands, weave in and out of songs and it's hard to know whats going on if your not a fan. However, I do think Umphrey's has more appeal to fans outside of the jam scene than a lof of other bands. Any fan of prog rock can get into Umphrey's usually. I think MMJ will just be more popular and they have been at bonnaroo forever. Umphrey's has set the bar for latenight shows however with that 5 hour non-stop gem of a show in '04.
umphrey is the future of the scene. maybe mmj headlines first. maybe not. but they are a roo band. thats the only time i see them as a part of it all. outside of roo they seem to rarely play a festie. i know langerado. but that hardly counts. umphreys is at nearly every fest. they are constantly playing show everywhere. it seems like mmj plays roo and does a few shows openng for mainstream type bands. umph is by far ans away doing more for the festival scene. and i think it will show 10 years from now. the festie scene is much larger then roo and mmj does very little outside of roo and umph is tearing it up every fest plus at a local bar 3 times a week in front of 800 people just tearing shit up!!!!! not opening for a more mainstream band a few times for people that hardly know or care who they are and only came to see pj. i not saying that noone went to see mmj but coeon. people are there for pj.

ok i will admit that i didnt know they played that much. i guess we just dont hear about it much. but they are still slacking on the fests. outside of roo they only played high sierra. also lolla, v, summerfest, but those are citified more mainstream fests. id like to attend any of them but they arent festivals in tha same sense as roo, all good, gotv, 10klf, etc... which is where its happening. and just to raise the point. umphreys had nearly as many shows as mmj had in the whole of 2006 before the time roo rolled around. and was close to doubling them for the whole year. phantasytour.com/um/shows.cgi?year=2006

I don't want to sound like a bitch, but man you're wrong. MMJ also played the Rites of Spring Festival and Coachella, not to mention all of the many foreign festivals they played. They are festival heavyweights, especially with their Langerado headline.
However, all of that goes out the window with Umphrey's playing "di(k in a Box" on NYE.
well again im gonna have to throw those in to the mainstream category. i dont feel that those festival represent the "festival scene" at all. madonna???? lol actually im not familiar with rites of spring. ill have to check that out.
its really a mute argument. mmj may headline first because they do have a more mainstream appeal. but to say that ther are more important/influential then umphreys in the festival world is insane in my view.
At the end of the day, this is an apples and oranges thing.
MMJ = Southern fried rock, critically acclaimed studio albums, fabulous songwriting, anthemic hooks, and able to blow the roof off most venues. That said, if you're looking for constant improvisation, it might not always be your bag.
UM = Classic prog rock, live for improvisation, jazz fueled songwriting, not as much acclaim for studio efforts, but also able to blow the roof off most venues. In this situation, those looking for a song to really sink their teeth into might get bored with their tendency to take the longer route.
You can enjoy them both, but they're hardly comparable bands. I realize this isn't a "versus" thread, but it has sort of devolved into one, so of course I had to stick my di*k in the mix. :-D
