It seems like some folks I talk to are hung up on the unjamminess of the headliners this year. I try to tell them that the headliners do not make the event- that the variety, the options, makes Bonnaroo what it is. I try to tell them that it is quite possible that skipping the headliner time slot to nap and recharge for the late shows may even make your experience better.
I try to make a metaphor out of the concept , and I just think I can come up with something much better than "the headliners are like the icing on the cake" or "the tip of the iceberg"
For you Roo vets, what is the headliners' position in the whole spectrum of Bonnaroo experience, metaphorically speaking?
I would say that it's like when you order the sampler platter for an appetizer at dinner and end up wanting to eat the whole thing but its obviously way too big and you'll be way to full if you try to finish it. With that in mind you have to make a decision if you will just pick at it knowing that you may waste food, or dive in acknowledging the fact that you may be too spent and not get to the rest of the meal, yet still be completely satisfied.
This will be my first year seeing a headliner. Much less two. I'm not a Dead, Panic, Dave or Phish fan. So the headliners of past years didn't do a lot for me. I go becasue of the other bands mostly. I go becasue I always walk away with more Cds to last me more than a year. I go because I like the fact that I can party my rear off see tons of cool bands and chill with 80,000 of my closest friends. The headliners usually are a time to head back to camp catch some Zs, eat, and relax before the late night sets.
I'm going for the people, the vibe and chances are if both of the headliners came to my area I would buy tickets to see them. And also their are going to be 78 other bands if Petty and Radiohead don't float your boat.
Of the twelve nights I've spent at Bonnaroo, there has been one time where the headliner was one of the highlights of my weekend (Trey '02), about 6 or 7 times where I've either taken a peek at the headliner scene for a while and then pursued other interests or just chilled towards the back of the lawn on a blanket, and four or five times where I've skipped the headliner entirely (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not).
The late night tents are the main event for me. One thing is certain: there is no one right way to do Bonnaroo.
Well, I do. This will be the first time since the first year that I'll be seeing all of the headliners.
Do they make the festy??
No, not at all. The late night sets are where it is at. The day sets you can relax and have fun at. The headliners are rageable, but beware... you could spend all your energy there and be f'ed for the late night shows.... this is why i'm glad that radiohead is playing friday... this is the night you have the most energy. I plan on sitting for most of petty's set, and raging at the late nights.... anyways.... just make sure you save your energy for the shows that you want to see the most.
I think that the headliners are where it's at, but the late nights are sweet too. All of the people at the headliners and late night shows and the glowstick wars make it incredible. I'm planning on bringing some glowsticks and filling the air when Oysterhead goes into an intense jam.

It is about time the got some form of the Dead playing a headliner, Radio Head.. hey i am open to knew things i expect to be blown away by them, Tom Petty as for as old timers go i was rather dissapointed in Dylan in 04 at the roo i was waiting and waiting for the Jack of hearts to be played but he played aobut every song off Spanish Harlem, it was sub par to say the least, Late nite shows to seem to be the best, Mars Volta, Umphrees, Moes legendary late nite set at the first roo, I my self usually take it easy during the day unless it is raining or atleast over cast, man the sun is really funking hot in Tenn.
