Good points. I guess when I said "not mainstream enough" I meant he's an artist I haven't ever heard on the radio. I know that's not the best indicator, but every other Roo headliner, barring WP, has featured on our local radio in some way. Radiohead, DMB, the Dead, even Phish (albeit only Bouncing Around the Room.) As weird as our music scene is, it's often my only indicator.

I hope to God he doesn't play Which Stage, regardless of time of day. That damn area is already way crowded, and it's obvious by this thread that there would be many, many faithful 'rooers that will want to be up close to see him. It'll be insane and lots of people (myself included) will get pissed.
I think Which Stage would be fine. Which Stage Latenight.
I think Tom would need to play that stage anyway because he would bring in a crowd.
Even those who never heard of him, scratching their heads, and thinking " isn't that the invention guy from Mystery Men " would come in to see the show.

Which stage, late-night wolud be perfect! I can't help but think that by mid-set alot of newcomers will have moved-on, leaving a really comfortable environment for the rest of us. Regardless of where he plays, it has to be night show. Anything else would just be wrong.

Ok, fans... lyrically, what's your favorite Waits song?
The ones that come to mind right away, for me, are: Step Right Up (Small Change), 9th & Hennepin (Rain Dogs), and What's He Building in There? (Mule Variations). All quite different, yet all paint vivid portraits, and all will make you laugh at least once.

Lyrically? Just about anything off The Black Rider. Waits and Burroughs minds both thrown into a blender. I could probably go on for hours about my favorite Waits lyrics.
Tom would definetly be one of those Bonnaroo acts that would attract crowds from other stages. People hearing strange donkey music and wondering what the hell it is.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
Interesting, someone else said the exact opposite, that lots of people would come to see him, but eventually the crowd would thin out as many non-fans would get tired and confused by him (or something to that effect). Alls I know is I'd like to see a wookie try to dance to one of his songs, like "Earth Died Screaming"!

Id be lying if I told you that wouldnt make me happy. Catching Tom and seeing half the crowd walk away would thrill me, probably not so much for Tom. I really can't see that happening though. I think after one Grizzly "Good evening" and a bad ass run through of Hoist That Rag and Jesus Gonna Be Here a bunch of people would be glued to whatever stage he's on. Rooers have been pretty receptive to some non-conventional "out there" stuff in the past. The Mars Volta went over very well in all their Superfly appearances. TMV, the same band that had bottles of piss thrown at them this year because the crowd couldn't handle the sonic force being projected through Cedrics hips.
edit: I also dont agree with the thought that Tom wouldnt boost attendance. I've heard alot of folks say it, but I dont think its true at all. If Tom decided today that he wanted to play 5 different 1,000 cap. venues in the Southeast he'd sell them all out shortly after the onsale.

I don't know if anyone said that Waits in the lineup would not boost sales, he absolutely would. And I also don't think people would be turned off by Waits' show, I think people will come in droves, and that's precisely why I wouldn't want him to play the poorly-planned Which Stage.

yeah, if he plays than bonnaroo should be progressive and open the what stage for a latengiht waits into primus ending wiht mars votla show
Thats the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Waits > Primus > TMV would be like every planet in the solar system aligning.
I'd be extremely happy if I could see Primus or TMV at Bonnaroo this year. I love New York, I really do. At this point in my life there's no other place I'd rather live. That said, a large portion of Primus and TMV fans from NY suck some serious ass. Haven't really seen bad crowds at Les shows as he draws in more dedicated fans I guess. Every Primus and TMV show I've been to in NY has been filled with assholes moshing their heads off. I'm really leniant when it comes to moshing as I see tons of different bands play in alot of different venues. It just pisses me off when it actually upsets the performers and they begin to dislike the area. Both Omar and Cedric never seem too fond of playing in NY and have expressed frustration with the fans here. Too boot Les seemed sincerely pissed after the last Roseland show when the crowd busted the barrier. Most of this garbage also holds me back from having a little fun at the shows. Smokings always pretty standard at a concert, but anything beyond that seems pretty pointless when your surrounded by a bunch of hostile morons.
