When did they start announcing what activities were going to be at Bonnaroo last year? I loved the sonic forest last year, and I hope it comes back. It was a fun little trip in and of itself.
"Another intriguing addition is the Sonic Forest: Bonnaroo, a 1,000 square foot interactive sound and light environment center created by Boston architect, musician and sound artists Christopher Janney. The forest has 16 eight-foot tall cylinders that contain audio speakers, lights & photo/electric cells."
I really didn't remember it having lights, but I guess it must have. What is really cool about it is that the sounds are triggered by movement, so it is always changing as it reacts to the people who are walking through it.
I remember just laying in the grass watching dozens of people just rubbing the poles while entranced by the noises they made. Made for good entertainment. Another fun thing to see (I never participated in this one) was the silent disco.
unfortunately, "sounds" is about the best I can do! Not music, though. Maybe musical in a way (like resounding notes or something) but I think a movement would trigger a sound....does that make any sense? I think I might remember birds chirping, too, but sometimes I remember things that didn't happen! Or maybe there were actually just birds chirping at the time.
I want to say it kinda worked like a thereimin where the closer you got the different the pitch of the sound, or maybe it had to do with how you touched the poles...my memory is a little foggy about it all
Did these things conflict with the shows, and was it worth it?
They were pretty much going on all day, so you could check them out between shows, during shows, after shows, whenever it suited you.
The Sonic Forest, Silent Disco and DJ/Scratching tent were all brilliant additions last year. You could get a quick lesson and scratch some records in the DJ tent. The silent disco was 25 or so sets of wireless headphones with the same music in them. So the people in it were all grooving to the same thing but you couldn't hear music if you were looking in from the outside. Hilarious.
The sonic forest played forest sounds, as well as some chime-like sounds. There was supposedly a puzzle to figure out each day with the sounds, but I couldn't figure out how any one would do it without having the whole place to themselves. It was perfect at night since most of the shows are 3+ hours we just wandered between them all and stopped at the forest to enjoy the trip a little. It must have been hilarious to watch my 2 other friends and I gazing with child-like wonderment at the lights and sounds.
i wandered through it and as i remember it was mostly frogs and insects... it really messed with you if you were altered, last year they had a guy blowing glass, it was pretty cool.. you could pick the colors and shape and he would blow you a pipe... it was expensive if i rememebr right but still cool to see
I googled it to find a picture and could only find this one that someone posted on a myspace bonnaroo forum... it doesn't really do it justice at all, but it does bring back good memories
I found lots of pictures of the silent disco, but it must be a popular festival thing, because most of them didn't look like bonnaroo... and they weren't good pictures anyway, without people moving its just not funny
