you were referencing fans in the sentence just before that, so I honestly wasn't sure which one you meant, but it doesn't really matter....you listed 9 "mtv" bands
Okay, I'm seeing some of the argument gel, and it's really an interesting one.
One side is saying that Radiohead et al is more mainstream than, say "Allman Brothers."
But I'd like to posit a different spin. See, when I see Phish stickers and fans plastered everywhere, I might say, "wow, the fact that every drunk frat guy at my college loves Phish, they must be mainstream."
And the fact that my Dad has several Allman Brothers albums- I would call them VERY mainstream when you look at the size of their adult fanbase. My parents have fucking_Yanni records for chrissakes. I've seen administrators at colleges brag about the Dead and Mule and the like and they all think Phish and Dave are horrible-- and they would NEVER say Radiohead is mainstream, they'd say it's indie noise.
Meanwhile, my father, and millions like him, wouldn't be caught dead listening to Radiohead or Beck.
Primus used to be on MTV all the time. Same with Petty. MTV has been grasping at straws to be relevant again and every now and then some decent music shows up and is quickly ushered off because it doesn't feature naked strippers and a bottle of champagne.
The MTV argument is exasperated. The "mainstream" argument is getting really, really tired.
It really comes down to it just being different, and for my tastes I like that it is getting away from the mainstream jam-band scene (two nights of WP and one of Dave was about as pandering to a mainstream audience as you can get). It's getting more experimental. With some great classics. But the real heart of it, and I've said this before, is that this is about artists at the top of their game. I mean come on- fucking Sonic Youth? Elvis Costello? I love that this lineup means that fucking_ johnny greenwood and Dr. John could end up in a catering tent shooting the shit. THAT'S what Roo is about. Can you imagine Warren Haynes complaining in a corner about how there aren't enough Jam Bands as fucking- Buddy Guy and the Dresden Dolls walk by?
Again, do you want to see a community that appreciates Roo's vibe get larger?

I asked for your list of mtv bands...you listed 9 mtv bands....at the end of the post you said so there is 9 or 10 by my count.....how in the world are you going to contend that you didn't call petty and blues traveler mtv bands?
well i would say it because i specifically stated that i would not generally call those bands mtv/mainstream... i said that when coupled with the mtv/mainstream bands(dcfc, bright eyes, matisyahu, dresdendolls) they are a considerable part of the draw... noone would pay 200 to come see dcfc and matisyahu..but you throw in radiohead beck and petty as headliners they become a big part of the draw for that crowd... it makes it worthwile for them to come see the mtv bands because they get to see these groups too... dosent make theses bands mainstream but they are contributing to the mainstream fans showing up....do you think that there would be as many people coming to see dcfc, dresden dolls and matisyahu if the other headliners were sci, wsp, and phil lesh... i dont think so..... so for the last time i am not throwing these bands into the mainstream group only that they contribute to the mainstream draw... and they certainly are a lot more mainstream then sci and wsp i hope that makes mor sense then that trainwreck of a quote and if not well just go ahead and believe whatever tickles your pickle

Just for the record, The Dresden Dolls are hardly MTV/Mainstream. I'm not a big fan of them, but they aren't even well known in the underground indie scene. I could say the same about Bright Eyes not being MTV/Mainstream, but I think I'm beating a dead horse at this point.
actually your right, theres no reason to be laughing. cuz for real, who really cares. I mean come on its the fucking NIT. dunno why i even wasted my time watching that. maybe next year you'll be in a real tournament.
Sounds like the worry is not so much the bands, but the people they would bring in. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Which leads me to a question - last year's lineup of Dave and WSP was a big draw to the "drunk frat guys" as you guys like to refer to - and wouldn't they be considered troublemakers? Won't that element be reduced with this lineup?

Perfect......here's a little karma for you..... ;D
I hate the fact that there are people who don't like music just because it is "mainstream" and other people like it. get over yourself...good music is good music. I hear people saying because of bands like Radiohead,Beck,Tom Petty ect. are making Bonnaroo too mainstream. F*ck that...all of those bands kick serious ass...I really don't care who ends up at Bonnaroo...I'll be to busy rockn out.
right.. not to be poopy.. but didnt you start that ultra flattering thread on my chemical romance???
and again i dont think anyone is really calling these bands mainstream (deathcab and matisyahu are) noone in there right mind would say that petty or beck are truly mainstream and i am hella excited to see them....lots of people try to boil it down to hating on bands and that is not what it is... as first time rooer i dont really expect you to understand what the vibe and community are all about... you have to experience it....and that community is undeniably changing... for better or worse i dont know...but i have a feeling it is for the worse
yea i did start that....haha although it had nothing to do with my chemcial romance nor was it intended to turn into that...i just knew it would be a good laugh for how many people got effin pissed ready to give their rant to find out the thread has nothing to do with them. and yes i do greatly dislike my chemical romance...but not because they are mainstream...because they suck.
not you..or very many on this board...but on other boards and what not I have heard many fellows boasting about the headliners being to mainstream for bonnaroo. true this is my first time so i can't say first hand...but i hope its not for the worse
yea and im just getting sick of the work "mainstream" period..blah

To stick to the question:
Is Bonnaroo too mainstream?
I still have this whole "the more, the merrier" notion about shows/concerts and whatnot. You can feel the passion in the air - that's what I'm hoping for.
I dunno about it being mainstream, but I know that if you know about it, make sure you tell the Right People.
I said no, for the simple reason of when I talk about Bonnaroo to people I come in contact with they look at me and go "WTF is a bonnaroo?"
Yeah, if I bring it up in a casual conversation it could be confused for some sort of tapenade, wood polish, or air purifier. The average person still doesn't have a clue about this festival. For what it's worth, I'm going to try and bow out of a few more of these tit for tat "mainstream" arguments. They've become far too widespread (no pun) and repetitive to the point where it's making my head hurt.
Props to Ka Mai for trying to reign it all into one thread.
I think the majority might just be at 10klf or something. Relix had a similar poll, "dude where are the jambands" was by far the most popular option, with like 600 votes, "still waiting for panic" and "radiohead? no thanks" each had like 80. "best lineup ever" "tom petty, mike gordon, whats to miss" and "good but not as good as last year" all came in at around 150 or something if i remember correctly. i tried to find it but its no longer up.
i would say that the inforoo poll itself is a sign of the changes of roos visitors...... if you had this lineup in 2003 and did this poll i think that the results would be incredibly different....i think the reason alot of these other sites have results oppsite of roos is because the people who went to roo for what the lineup has traditonally been arent going this year, but they still visit sites that deal with the music but are not showing up at inforoo because they are not goin this year and roo isnt a "jamband" event anymore

It's popular to hate on radiohead in some circles it seems. Can't fault that fully, b/c I'm sure there are bands that I hate on who I haven't FULLY given a chance to. I try my best to give everything I hear an honest listen, but a lot of times I pigeonhole stuff in advance. And a lot of times, I'm right - but I'm sure I'm wrong every now and then.
I just hope all the Radiohead non-believers give their set at least a little chance and don't use the time to prep for the late nights. This set has the chance to be the biggest "I had no idea!" moment at Bonnaroo for the thousands who haven't experienced them live.
Again, just try to trust us radioheads. All the jam band fanatics will love this show.

Amen brother...
This whole discussion makes me sigh... people are so protective of their particular "scene" it's funny...
I think the people that live here in my house are like a little sample of what this years bonnaroo demographic will be. There's a couple of us that are into mostly indie/alt rock (and are coachella vets) and 3 others that are mostly into Phish, Particle, WP, etc...(and are bonnaroo vets) but we all get along great (all 5 of us went to coachella last yr, and vegoose) and there's a lot more music that we agree on than we disagree on... so don't worry people, our house has been an experiment on how these two "different" worlds can co-exist, and I'm happy to report that we all get along swimmingly ;D
oh yeah, it's also funny how I keep hearing from some of you how Coachella's vibe is so drastically different from Bonnaroo's... I hope that's not true, because I absolutely love the vibe at coachella... for the fact that it's NOT "mainstream" (OK maybe if you just look at the headliners, they are more well-known (gasp! ), and don't even try to throw "madonna" back in my face... that is an anomaly... and besides, she's going to be in the electronica tent, not even on a stage) Everyone gets along great at coachella, and from what I've seen and heard about bonnaroo (from people who have been to both) the crowds are made up of pretty much the same types of people: cool music lovers who are friendly to each other and wouldn't be caught dead listening to top 40 or MTV.
awww dude, I was gonna try to stay out of this discussion... "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"
i have never been to coachella so i dont know their crowd....but i know it used to be that bonnaroo and coachella were 2 very distinctly different events...and now they have become the same thing.... i think your statement above would atest to that....i guess it just boils down to whether you like the new stuff or the old stuff..... i have come to the end of my rope....bonnaroo IS different then it was and im convinced that there is no going back.....i have come to the conclusion that i am just going to have to deal with that fact...it will never be the same and i will just enjoy it for what it is..... would i go to coachella?? hell yes i would....but i would never have been as fired up about it as i was about roo... and now that is how i feel about roo...10klf is where its at...but im not wealthy and can only afford 1 or 2 festies a year and bonnaroo used to automaticaly fill a spot without even seeing what the lineup is...but they have lost that automatic bid from me and alot of fellow rooers that are not pleased with th changes...i am sure that a good time will be had by all.... will the scene or the music be the same as in years past, not a chance..it will pop up at cetain shows but for the most part i expect alot of differences from years past...luckily i go with a large group and i am positive we will have a great time...albeit a different time then years past....i have gone through anger, denial, etc... and now i have finally reached the acceptance stage... sorry it took so long... i was really addicted to roo
