I keep seeing threads made that are nothing but negative. I for one think this is by far the best festival of the summer with all the DIVERSITY in bands. Im going to see Radiohead, Buddy Guy, The Refugee Allstars and so many more. Now I want to pose the question, where else are you going to get to see such DIVERSITY. Please, only people excited about the show this year reply because there are enough threads to vent on. This thread will be much like Bonnaroo itself.....nothin but good vibes.
It is going to be a great mix. I would like to see a few more jam bands, but if I wanted all Jam bands I would go to Wakarusa. That is all they have going on. I hope to see someone like the Refugee All Stars right before heading out to see Radiohead.
Dude you hit the nail right on the head. You have so many good acts from different genres and great bands that are fusing genres together. Bands like Radiohead that have brought electronics into indie, Beck combines hip hop with inde along with folk and everything else. Medeski have broght hip hop into jazz, the Streets have brought hip hop with a dance tip. Oysterhead has combined the talents of the Police, Phish, and Primus, who would have ever thought, Damien Marley is hip hopish reggae, and these are just some of the genre-bending artists.
And then in talking about the sheer range of diversity, everything from jammys, cutting edge indie, emo, old school hip hop, new school hip hop, jazz, blues, not classic rock but rock classics (Petty), old school indie, blue grass, reggae, gospel, whatever you want to call Balkan Beat Box's sound, portugese acoustical bowie, folky indie with potential mental problems, hisidic reggae, groovy live house, progressive house, strange psychedelic swedish rock, and I know that I am missing a ton of the many great genres that will be embraced by or introduced to all. To me this line up keeps getting more diverse with each addition but still bringing in consistent quality, which is all you can ask for. I am sure that there will at least one or two more bands that will be added that will make you happy. In the case of others, we might actually get 5 to 10 bands that will just add the cherry on top of the proverbial cake.
Anyways, thats my take. Hopefully with this type of diversity, we should be able to see the type of history making collaborations live and in full color that could become legendary (all to be determined by our varying levels of intoxication). Alright, I have ranted enough to satisfy myself. I am just happy that there was a positivity thread about these additions, because I have thought the last two rounds were nothing short of genious especially with the Tortured Soul, Sonic Youth, and Cypress Hill adds that for me came out of nowhere.

Thank you!! This is what makes me the most excited for Bonnaroo. Of course i would like to see String Cheese added or hear Gov't Mule or the Flaming Lips to sign, if i saw one of them there i think i could die content. The only thing though is i still get to see so many other amazing acts in their place. I would like to see STI in place of Cyress hill but still IT'S CYRESS HILL. What a story to tell around the watercooler either way right? Yea Roo!
I agree with it all. Like I've said countless times now, if you want a strictly jam fest, you have more than enough options this summer. Quit your bitc*ing and sell your ticket if you're so disappointed with the diversity.
Post by somwherbtween on Apr 1, 2006 17:00:23 GMT -5
I just think people had bigger expectations for artist announcements, including myself. But I still have a ticket and I am still fu*king stoked for the festival. I will get my jamband fix the weekend before at Wakarusa and I recommend other people do the same at another festival. If you can't travel as far as Wakarusa go check out the Jambase Festival Guide. There are plenty of festivals in the midwest and south over the summer that are almost strictly jamband oriented.

You know, just as much as some people complain about the lack of whatever you want to call it at Roo this summer, i hear just as many people throwing the "diversity" argument out there trying to silence anyone who is dissapointed with this years lineup... Jamband fans already feel like they're being left behind and theres alot of peeps basically saying "If you dont like it, dont go..." which isnt helping the vibe at all... Im sorry that so many people dont understand why some are so shocked and dissapointed by alot of things changing this year but things HAVE changed, ALOT... I dont know, all im saying is dont judge... Try to hear people out, if you can't get an idea of where they're coming from you probably cant offer any constructive criticism either...

BTW Bonnaroo has always been diverse, its just becoming moreso in the sense of musical communities converging(which is a great thing). Perhaps tension is inevitable but im sure all will be good on the grand scheme of things. Bonnaroo is in a league of its own, no one should expect it to be like any other festival, it wasnt made to be like any other...

^^^^^^ This is what I don't understand.

^^^^^^ This, I totally do understand.
I guess I have a hard time trying to swallow both pills. I'm not trying to be aggressive or create any sort of tension with my comments. My honesty with the "if you don't like it, don't go" sort of comments is nothing more than that...honesty. I'm not necessarily referring to any individuals off of this board Lucid, but more so this overall attitude of stubbornness that is clogging everything up. We're all sick of this so called tension.
Post by Lucid Interval on Apr 2, 2006 3:10:11 GMT -5
Im sick of the tension too man... I realize that you dont understand where im coming from and im not interested in fighting... Im just trying to shed some sort of light on the fact that all this "b*tching" isnt always simply whiney childish behavior.... When things change this drastically people are going to speak out, and not all of us deserve to be grouped with people who are pissing and moaning like little girls about stupid crap like the "mainstream", "selling out" and the Bonnaroo is doomed mentality... thas all im sayin... I'll be there in June man...
Oh god im going to wake up tommorow with karma like keiths was after this one...
Yeah things have changed, but that's what things do....They change. I have no problem with people saying, "Oh I wish they'd add more jam bands or newgrass or whatever." What upsets me is when people start b!tching about the fans, of whatever band that's going to be there, and how it's gonna drastically change the vibe of Bonnaroo.
This REALLY is the most diverse festival in the US, if not the the entire world. It started that way, and it will continue to be that way, for as long as there is a Bonnaroo. Maybe there aren't as many jambands this year, maybe there will be more next year, and less indie, who knows. It's all good music though, and complaining doesn't change a d@mn thing. Just contribute to the good vibes, as much as possible. If everyone does thier part, there should be no problems, reguardless of what fans show up.
I gotta agree with you lucid. Everyone who is telling people to stop complaining would be doing the exact same thing if the situation was reversed. If 'roo started out with as few jam acts as this year and was slowly adding more and more each year and dropping the amount of indie bands until it was almost all jam acts like the first year then most of the people going this year would be complaining. Nothing against ANYONE, just saying the fans who are going have changed too. Not a bad thing by any means but its a large reason there is the tension we've seen. Maybe not tension but differences of opinion. I might be the only one who's noticed but in every thread about who everyone is excited to see I would definitely be in the minorty with my choices. I noticed last year and really this year that most people have 1 or 2 jam acts and then a long list of Indie and other type music. I'm just saying that I think a lot of the people going for like the 1st and 2nd time would not even have an interest in going the first couple years and the people who loved the first couple linups are slowly starting to lose interest. While I may not think this year looks as good as years past I DO think it's awesome that so many people with such different musical tastes are gonna get to experience 'roo.
"Everyone who is telling people to stop complaining would be doing the exact same thing if the situation was reversed."
-Um, nope. I went to Roo in the past DESPITE the fact that I'm not a big jam band fan. Am I more excited for this year than say, last year? NO. And that's the point. I am JUST as excited. Before I went to Roo for the first time everyone told me about the vibe and how cool a community it was and how all these incredible, diverse acts and cool people were there-- and it was all true, I was amazed. But now there is this irritating buzzkill vibe that keeps showing up, from essentially the same 5 people, in every thread; and it speaks, essentially, against the very vibe I was sold on and loved so much.
I think those of us who roll our eyes at the complaints can't believe that the same people who can embrace Ozo, Mars Volta, J5 and Tea Leaf Green have a hard time embracing alternative acts known for their improv/jamming (I'm getting into "mainstream" arguments anymore-- Radiohead and Beck are not as "mainstream" as Allman's, Dave and Phish).
My point is, and continues to be: It is clearer now more than ever how conservative part of the jamband community has become. It was inevitable that with how wide the doors got thrown open that eventually you would start closing them- and here it is. Here is a chance for fans of the unique music Radiohead creates to experience and join the Roo vibe and start broadening their horizons, and likewise of those interested in any other groups. And instead they are being met with a very selfish, negative vibe from-- of ALL PEOPLE-- the jamband community usually known for their openness.
If only High Times could have done an article on Radiohead last fall to help smooth all this out.

I am more excited this year because there are more people I want to see; but otherwise, I'm in total agreement with this statement. This is the first year that there are more than 5 bands that I really want to see, but I was never complaining in the past. And, next year, if the lineup goes back to having more jam bands, I won't complain then either.

Dude i am not a spokesperson for whatever you think the "jamband" community is... Im trying to speak out AGAINST the negativity and stupid arguments... Im not closing my doors, and i have no control over anyone else's... Part of what im trying to say is that i dont want to be grouped with the people you're describing above, i really hope people dont take a few internet posters(from anywhere) as a tried and true reflection of the community... Im just as excited as all of you are for the roo', and im all about good vibes and not tension...
It just seems hard to say anything even remotely critical or to voice an opinion without someone pinning me up on the "jamfan" wall of shame and closed mindedness...
I guess i feel a little misunderstood...
Anyway, with all this said im just going to stop discussing anything having to do with the lineup...

I can see where your coming from Lucid, wanting to see more "jam bands" in the lineup cause you prefer it. There are a few bands i cant see how they were added but I don't care, just wont see em. ME personally, not really into the jam scene....although I play The Grateful Dead Live in New York when Im at work at a local video store every night. I was sad about WSP and DMB last year but I didnt mind cause it gave me time to rest for Volta. The people who come for the jam bands are some of the coolest and nicest people I've ever met, but there are also some very nice Radiohead fans and I honestly dont think a lot of people will pay 200 for a ticket to be an ass. So, I think the fan situation will go great again. Oh, I am excited as hell about Oysterhead cause i play bass and it's Les. But I have 20 plus bands I wanna see so I'll probably see 10-15 at best, but I'm hoping for some more "jam bands" like the Lips or Modest Mouse again. No matter if theres any more announcements I think this year is great and hopefully maybe I'll got to check out a band I normally wouldnt and run into ya Lucid and we can party it up man.

I totally agree with this post-- but I'm afraid you haven't come across as "not a spokesperson." I went back and re-read some of your recent posts where you say things like, "Jamband fans already feel like they're being left behind..." and "Im sorry that so many people dont understand why some are so shocked and dissapointed [sic]" you really have stoked part of this. I'm sorry its led to you being misunderstood too if you don't feel the same as the issues you've been defending.
Hopefully we can all go from misunderstanding to just being cool with it and gearing up for a great roo...

I totally undertsand some people wanting more bands to their liking. I made this post mainly just to say i hope a lot of people dont go to Bonnaroo upset theres not more bands to their liking. But go instead happy to be around some good people and are open to hearing some stuff they might otherwise not ever choose to listen to. Also, although i didnt point it out in the initial post I hope everyone will give the new people a chance and lead by example. Last years group of people was so nice to me and my friend. I know the goodtimes are gonna keep rollin. I just like how this years event isnt loaded down with jam bands but has spread it even some. If I was a big jam band fan I'd probably not like this but I'd still go to listen to some things I normally wouldnt. I'm going to definitely catch Oysterhead and MMW and Bela Fleck, I've never listened to any of those bands but am stoked to see em cause some of my friends have told me good things.

Yes and i will be at Radiohead, Sonic Youth, MMJ and Beck whom i normally never would see otherwise, im psyched... Gunna see the flaming lips for the first time at Wakarusa too that should be sweet...
Radiohead and Beck are not as "mainstream" as Allman's, Dave and Phish).
If only High Times could have done an article on Radiohead last fall to help smooth all this out.
those are two of the most ridiculous things i have ever heard and i will leave at that to not be super negative
i would say that the fact the so many poeple are saying things like
"ive gone in the past despite not being a big jamband fan"
"this is the first year that i have more then 5 bands i wanna see"
and dozens more like them should go to show that there has been quite a shift.... and yet these people who make these comments about how much the lineup has changed and then turn around and say that they dont understand what we are talking about

First, I don't know about Allman Brothers or Phish, but I don't think it is ridiculous at all to say that Radiohead is not as mainstream as Dave Matthews.
Second, I said this was the first year there are more than 5 shows I really want to see. I don't recall ever saying that there isn't a change in the lineup. I have said that 'roo has always been diverse, and I still believe that. There were more jambands in the past, but there was also a lot of other kinds of music as well.

Well thank you for showing such restraint. I've proved my point umpteen times now about Phish, Dave and the Allman Brothers. If you somehow think that the Allman's amazingly large adult and young fanbase in some way is smaller than Radiohead's, than there is nothing I can say that will change your mind. I could show you the list of platinum album sales, radio play, concert stats and more for decades, but it probably wouldn't do any good because your definition of "mainstream" would just shift to accommodate.
And your desperation to point out the "shift" just further proves my point about the closing doors of the more conservative jamband community, which goes back to the one question you haven't answered that I have asked over and over: Do you want to see the Roo community grow?

Although I'm a first timer, drawn mainly because Radiohead is headlining (although I almost went last year with a group of friends that I'm going with this time), I still get what you're saying Lucid. Nobody should have a problem with you voicing your displeasure as long as you do so in a curteous way that doesn't throw negativity at anybody.....and you definitely do a good job of that.
I agree that most anyone that saw fewer and fewer of their favorite bands being invited would feel a little miffed. I know I would. All that really matters though is that you take it as an opportunity to explore some new music, and if you don't like the music, just move on to something else -- because I'm sure there's plenty to move on to at Bonnaroo!
And in the meantime, those of us that don't care as much about the jam-band side of things need to quit taking things so personally. This will work, it will be an awesome time, and the sooner we stop over-analyzing things, the sooner we can open our minds to the experiences and opportunities we have ahead of us!
