And if you are 6'4"; don't push deep into a crowd and then stop right in front of someone 5'4"
I happen to be 6'4" and I must admit, my height comes in very handy at concerts, but there have been times when I find myself standing right in front of a short girl... when it happens, I always apologize and try my best to take a half step left or right so they can kinda see... but sometimes there's nothing you can do and people get pissed off... but hey, I'm not about to give up my primo spot just because you can't see over me. I try not to be a d ick about it. I have even had instances where girls have climbed up on my back to see better. I don't care.
I never realized how big a difference a few inches can make until I recently went to a few shows with one of my roommates who is only 5-2 and I stooped down to her eye level for a while to see what it was like. wow, i went from seeing the musicians' shoes to barely being able to see their heads...
At the Radiohead show in Chula Vista 03 I was right up front in the pit, and the guy next to me passed out twice, so I picked him up and dragged him out to a security guard. I then wormed my way back up to the very front, pissing off several people. sorry, but it had to be done.... ;D
...and another thing i have going for me (besides height) is an unusually large bladder it seems... because I always seem to be able to go a long time without needing a bathroom break. my friend used to call me the "ideal concert-going specimen" because of this. At coachella 04 I parked myself in front of the main stage and sat through Sparta, Wilco, Pixies, and Radiohead without ever leaving for a piss break. it's one of my proudest accomplishments...
ironically, all my best friends throughout HS and college seemed to be the complete opposite, telling me to pull the car over every 10 minutes so they can whiz on the side of the road. dime-sized bladders every one of em... it's my curse
I would suggest getting there when the previous show ends, if you want to be up close. I got to see Bela and the Acoustic Trio front row center because I showed up just as the previous show was ending. Afther the previous show, everyone cleared out because Bela and the trio were not due for another hour or 45 minutes. I walked up front staked my claim and waited. As an added bonus Bela and his bandmates came out and did a jaw-dropping soundcheck (for about 15-20 of us) for about 20-30 minutes prior to the show. It was like getting two bela shows in one.
I've got to be up front for every show it seems like because its like you can just feel so much more energy being right up front or pretty close up front. Last year when we switched time zones, my phone didnt. So my phone was an hour ahead and to top that off i was already trying to get there 30min before the show started. So I ended up being an hour and 30min early for each show and I'm sitting there wondering why every band has started so late. Then, sunday I finally realized why! It was real cool being up front for all those shows though.

I was totally confused on the time change last time too, deloused. No more, though -- I'm bringing a separate cheap watch so I don't have to carry my cell around, and I'm setting it to Central before I leave.
im not too worried about being up front. id rather be a lil ways back, able to claim a spot and chill out without people on top of me. I guess everyone has their preference how theywant to enjoy a show. i guess im just used to being in the 'lawn' for shows, and have grown to love the dancing around in the open grass with my beer and bowl

I feel the most energy when I'm behind at least some people that I can see getting down. Too far back and you lose volume, but I don't like being all the close. And room is crucial - but you can always make room if you act crazy enough.
Yea thats what i do i just get crazy and people make way. One year at a show i saw this guy just barging through the crowd yelling "I HAVE A WEEPING ANUS!!", that cleared people out of his way real quick...i might have to try that one.

Yeah I love leaning down add seeing what normal people see. THen I smile and say, OK I guess its cool to be tall. I am not that big on seeing but I don't know what it would be like to stand and stare at some heads for an hour.

i only feel bad about it when i am trying to squeeze up to the front and i finally deem myself close enough and have to stop in front of somebody. i know i hate it when ive been watching a show for an hour and someone squeezes up. then when you step back to give them room to squeeze through they just make a home there. at least i can see over most people. it would suck to be short though
I like being in the back for the more crowded stage shows, you can just chill out on the grass and take in the music. But for the smaller tent shows I was up front for quite a few last year and it was AMAZING. For such a huge festival it felt really intimate. And it wasn't hard at all to get up close, there are so many tents shows etc going at once, I only found you have to arrive about 20 minutes early and you're good.
As far as not burning out during the day, the only rule I have is lots of water during the day, and no drinking alcohol till night time. Everything else is fair game It's worked so far!

ya... i only pick a couple of shows to go up front for. i was perfectly happy for dave at the middle of the pack. chilling on a blanket, smoking and drinking in comfort, just taking in all of the lights and glowsticks flying around. it was perfect. but i plan on being on tired puppy on friday night/sat. morning. i wanna be up front for oysterhead and umph/bisco (especially if they are doing the rumored floyd/hendirx show for their get together jam)
The only one I was up front for was Neil Young, and we were there for about 5 songs. That was enough for me, he is one of my idols so seeing him play that close was a dream come true. I mostly sit back and enjoy the show, sometimes the people are just as entertaining as the music.
I always prefer to sit back on the lawn during the headlining shows. You can still enjoy the music and totally relax and save energy for the latenight sets. When there is that many people at a show I have no desire to get up front.

I was up front for Trey in '04. What a waste of my energy to push to the front. I'm debating trying to wait all day for Radiohead this year, but there's just so much good music that would be missed.
