Alright, i'm new to roo this year. Very exicted.
Out of the long list of bands that have been posted, how many would it actually be possible to see? 20?, 25?, 30? (Provided that you were to arrive on thursday and leave on monday morning).
I know that it is easy to burn yourself out at outdoor festivals but i am excited to see as many bands as possible.
Could someone give me an example of how many acts they were able to see in the past years?
Depends on your viewing. Do you mean whole sets? I've gone the last three years and end up set jumping. I'll catch some of a show and depending on how much I like it I'll either leave early or stay for the rest.

I normally commit to full sets, but I might do some jumping this year. For the acts I'm REALLY interested in though, I feel like I need to stay for the whole set or I didn't get their entire experience.

I'd say during the day, FOUR full sets is what you could get. There's usually four a stage during day. I'd rather pick one or two full sets, and catch 8 half shows or even 16 1/2 hr segments of all the artist. (stages are close enough to do so) At night, you get 6 bands playing, where you could see two( one short, one long) set, or break it up, and see mini shows of all six!
I seen more music last year then any other year, just because I' went out to ROO with the mindset I was a photogropher. Bounced from each stage, to take a picture of the band as close as i could get (front side, then work in) Well, You hear music on your way to, while your there, and as you walk away. The best way to do it. Map out your top five, and then just bounce around the other 75 bands!!! YEAH ROO
I've seen between 20 and 30 bands from Friday through Sunday each of the last 4 years. That includes bands that I just caught a song or two and bands I saw whole sets of and everything in between. Years where I tended to stay at sets longer ended up totalling closer to 20 bands, years I bounced around more were closer to 30. There's actually quite a difference between 20 and 30, maybe more than it seems. Those numbers don't include Thursday but definitely include late nights, which I never miss.
After the first year or two, I made a conscious effort to try to catch a lot more bands. At this point I think I might be ready to swing back the other way and try to get better spots for longer stays at sets this year. The best thing to do is plan a few acts you want to see whole sets of once the schedule comes out, maybe plan a time where you will try to bounce around a lot, and just go with the flow. I always ending up doing something quite contrary to my plan every year anyway. It can be fun to camp out at the main stage all day or fun to bounce around and see a dozen different bands in eight hours.

I found it helpful to skip around as much as possible, but it really depends on the schedule. I highlighted shows on the schedule and mapped out where I would be at EXACT times and it actually didn't seem to help much. If you go in there saying "I'm gonna catch every minute of all the action", chances are you will miss more than you bargained for. If you go at it with a "I'm gonna bounce around a bit and see where it takes me" attitude, you'll probably be more satisfied with what music you experienced when Monday rolls around and it's time to leave. It is a pick-and-choose thing here, but 80 bands, three days, and sweltering heat doesn't make it easy on you. Stay longer for the shows you want to see the most (obviously), but don't forget about what may be going on in the other areas also. Have fun!
I'm a festival infant (only been to this year's Coachella), but I agree with a lot of the comments here. Creating a minute-to-minute plan may seem like the most logical thing to do beforehand, but it's really not that fun when put into practice. Jumping from stage to stage only catching a few songs from each act is really fun.
This might be difficult if you're in a group of a few people, however. At Coachella I pretty much went on my own for both days and I had the time of my life. While it would have been nice to be with my friends the whole time, I would have had to compromise choices in bands. Make plans (place and time) to meet with your friends to get food, watch a specific band, etc. and you can go off on your own and see all the bands you want.
im gonna try and hit up mad acts this year, its easy to get an attack of the lazy's in that tennesse sun and miss some sweet music though, im gonna have to try to keep that to a minimum this time but whatever, gotta just go with the flow and see where it takes you.
yeah, I had the same problem last year. damn heat! haha but yeah, I'm not going to let it happen this year. so many great acts to see and so little time. I'm with you terrapin, let's clone ourselves so we can see every single full set
never been, but there are sooo many bands playing that I've wanted to see, so I'm gonna try to catch as much music as possible - whether that means bouncing around or staying put...well i guess we'll just see...Friday is stacked in my book, so I want to catch as much as possible (i'll take it easy during petty though)...saturday, we'll need to see how it shakes out....i want to be up front for radiohead, so i'm hoping I can still catch some of my other saturday must sees before parking myself in front of the big stage...sunday, i'm planning on taking it easy...milling around a bit...i will make sure that i catch son volt though as I've been into them for 10 years now and have never been to a live show...and sonic youth...oh god....release the schedule already so i can put myself out of my misery (schedule conflicts is the best kind of misery though)

plan on seeing a set, then skip the next 30-45 mins so you can get to the next set. This is what I found last year to be true. None of this ok we go to the which tent and then thats over and we go to this and then this and then we crashed.....
