Hey guys, I figured I'd start this out. There are bound to be bands we are unfamiliar with. This is a great place to give recommendations for the best albums to pick up for people looking to get into the new Bonnaroo bands. We've done this in the past and it's been very helpful. Post away!
I'll start with an easy one.
My Morning Jacket.
I'd recommend getting your hands on everything eventually, but I feel that It Still Moves and Z are a great way to engross yourself in their catalog. Then I'd say move onto At Dawn and finally The Tennessee Fire.

Respectfully, I'm going to disagree and say that the absolute best way to get into MMJ is either the CD or DVD of Okonokos, their live album. I think they are defined by their live performances, and this CD/DVD does NOT disappoint.
As far as other bands, I think Death Cab's best is Transatlanticism, and is also a good introduction to/combination of their current vs. their old sound (for those unfamiliar).

I agree and disagree.... I got really into MMJ but progressively listening to their albums in order... it allowed me to really gain a respect for how they've evolved and where they're going.... of course, MMJ live is the reason they kick so much ass, but a wholehearted respect for their music helps take them to a way higher degree.... Okonokos is freakin awesome, don't get me wrong... but I think the studio albums helps gain more perspective on the band......

Those are the only two I have by them, and they are two of the best albums in the past ten years.
Iron & Wine The Shepherd's Dog - one of the best albums of 2007, in my opinion. Sam strays further away from his simple folk beginnings. A great way to see what they'll be like at Bonnaroo. Woman King EP - the precursor to Shepherd's Dog, this is where we saw Sam start to write for a full band. It is fantastic.
The Allman Brothers Band You should already know their stuff, but just in case you don't: The Allman Brothers Band - contains the songs "Dreams" and "Whipping Post." Idlewild South - contains "Revival," "Midnight Rider" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." Brothers & Sisters - contains "Jessica" and "Southbound." Live At Fillmore East - the quintessential Allmans album.
Jack Johnson On & On - my favorite of his, though all this albums sound pretty much the same. Not a bad thing, since they're all incredibly laid back.
Sigur Ros Takk... - their newest and most joyous album yet. Ethereal, beautiful, and inspiring. Unlike anything else you've ever heard. ( ) - their completely untitled album. Just as incredible as Takk...
Anyone who only knows Pearl Jam by their first couple albums, I recommend listening to "Live at the Gorge"7 CD Set That has most of their catalog on it and shows how good they are live!
Guys, this is a great thread. I've been lurking since nov. this is the first time i was inspired to add something.
Here's my 2 cents:
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - 100 Days 100 Nights I can guarantee everyone who goes to see her will be dancing their butts off. She plays motown style R&B/Soul music.
Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates
!!! - Louden Up Now
Jose Gonzalez - In Our Nature
Avett Brothers - Emotionalism
and...i totally agree with the above posters about Battles. They dominate everything.
This bonnaroo will dominate everything. Hopefully we get some more solid additions.
Also, i think www.allmusic.com is just about the greatest resource on the internet. They have the most fair and unbiased record reviews that i've ever seen.

Gotta agree. Saw her at Langerado last year and she was tremendous.
and i LOVE Against Me!, saw them a couple months ago, they are great live.
I love their first three albums, their new one is alright, i HATE their single Thrash Unreal, it's so poppy =(
But here are some song suggestions from their first three albums:
Reinventing Axl Rose - "Reinventing Axl Rose," "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong," "Baby, I'm an Anarchist."
As the Eternal Cowboy - "Sink, Florida, Sink," "Turn Those Clapping Hands into Angry Balled Fists."
Searching For A Former Clarity - "Miami," "Don't Lose Touch."
this guy is all over it
i got to see against me! with cursive and mastodon last year. what a show! against me! played every song you listed....plus a boatload more. that show probably ranks in the top 10 that ive ever been to!
Just in case some of you don't know about old school Metallica, you should definitely check out Ride the Lightning. Really good, from their "pre-sellout" days.

yeah i've seen em twice, once at warped tour. but that mad short set at warped tour had nothing on a couple months ago when they were headlining their tour. and it was general admission, and i drunkenly moshed for the first time, fun as hell. and I got a drumstick from the drummer! Karma when i can

Don't forget Kill 'Em All and ...And Justice For All either!!!!!
We gotta deal with em....might as well have fun with it!

I was actually gonna ask that. I have the Black album, but am unfamiliar with their early stuff. I know it's been a long time since then, but I still need to understand why they were once great. So "Ride the Lightning"... any others?
