I know there have been some threads discussing personal experiences with stolen items, etc. but does anyone have any actual statistics relating to muggings or things of that nature at Bonnaroo? My friend's parents are deciding whether or not to let him go and this is a major aspect for them.

No actual statistics. No way to keep track. I've been 2 years in a row and had no problems. I know some people have had problems (in terms of inner-tent theft, no muggings that I've ever heard of). You take your chances w/ crime every day of the week in everyday life. In terms of violence, etc., 'roo is a Utopia - MUCH less hazardous than walking down the street in Any City, USA.
I think the crime level is quite low. There's rumors of people getting stuff taken, but it's always 2nd or 3rd hand ("I know this guy who was camping next to this girl who heard..."). As far as violent crime, pretty much zero. Don't have the time to dig deep right now but I came across this tinyurl.com/mwhlq , said in 2004 there were NO violent crimes reported, which I know doesn't mean none were committed, but goes to show that it's a peaceful vibe.
you're always going to run the risk of getting something stolen.. but that's true for real life as it is for bonnaroo. just keep all your valuables in a safe place and you should be fine.
oh, and don't ever leave your cooler just sitting out when you're not at your campsite... beer is the most commonly stolen thing at the Roo, as with any festival..
i do have to recommend that you put stuff up. thats the best way to keep it from getting stolen. that being said i always leave my coolers out. ive gone out for hours with my cds and cd player, a nice bong, coolers full of beer etc... and never had any problems. one of the first things we do when we get there is say whats up to our neighbors and we all kinda watch out for eachother. i do recommend putting your cooler in your tent if it is windy. your tent might fall down but it wont blow away.
Our neighbors got robbed but they weren't being very careful with their stuff. They actually got robbed while they were there, asleep but they had the hatch of their SUV wide open pretty much the entire festival with all of their stuff inside. All it takes is to lock it up in your car and the theifs will go for the easy targets.
On a whim last year en route to the Roo, we bought one of those Rubbermaid two-trashcan storage bins, mostly to keep stuff out of the rain; then we noticed it had a place for a padlock. The six of us used that bad boy for valuables & coolers full of food and beer -- needless to say, we're bringing it back.

Yea - even though I don't it's necessary, I lock all my valuables (wallet, $$, etc.) in my car and zip up my tent everytime before leaving my site unattended. We generally keep our cooler in the corner of a shade tent, to keep the cool & to keep them out of sight.
With fundamental precautions like this, and a good attitude, you should have no problems. I've said it before - events like this create a Karmic Nexus (this is just my theory). The way you treat others & the land you are on has a MUCH more defined & immediate effect. Be nice. Pick up trash. Smile. Good things WILL happen to you.
Violent crime is almost nill, but there are pholks who love to "ground score" things - even in tents. Much like the Orcish saying of "If you can't hold on to it, you never deserved to have it in the first place."
I've personally had food and beer swiped from a zipped-up tent, but I hoped (at least for the food) that the person who took it really was hungry. No excuse for the beer though!

What campground was this in, pigs (I mean in terms of proximity to centeroo)? Just curious - I have no guage on these kinds of thing, but I've always thought of BFE as being more susceptible to random swipings.
Thieving is NOT a ground score. Ground scores are things picked up off the ground - I'm all about the ground score, hehe.

I've seen people "ground score" things that people dropped at their feet, while they were still standing there. I'm assuming you're talking about finding something in a general area where no one has been for a while. I would agree that is not stealing. I guess we've got different definitions of the phrase.
I was in BFE for '02, with no problems at all. I was near the eastern side of Bushy Branch Rd (the "back" entrance) in '03 and '04 and that's where the problems occurred. '03 for me and '04 for some buddies. I'm paranoid and usually lock everything I can in my truck, but I got lazy and didn't put the cooler away one time and got burnt for my sloth.
Having your neighbors "look after" you campsite is a nice thought, but frequently the reality is that during the day, when the concerts are going full steam, no one is in the campsite - not even your neighbors. Around dinner time more people return, but my experience has been that even with a group of 15 people, there were many hours a day when no one was around. YMMV.

Oh yea - I'm talking about a ground score in terms of finding something that someone dropped or fell out of their pocket, DEFINITELY not when they're still standing there. I mean I don't scout people out. I pick up trash anyway, and sometimes that trash turns into a ground score (make sure to look inside cigarette boxes).
i dropped some money at a store a while back. i knew i did it but i went about handing my cash to the cashier. i then went to grab the money i had dropped and the 60 year old lady had put her foot on top of it. she tried to play dumb but i cussed her out after i got my change. people suck.

I've been in BFE 3 times and never had any problems with theft. I do recall the first year seeing a car with a hand-made sign on Sunday morning complaining about stuff being lifted on Saturday. But generally if you at least acknowledge the folks around you and use common sense about locking up valuables there's nothing to worry about.
Now speaking of ground scores last year I had the best I've ever found. Friday we entered centeroo through the entrance farthest from the main stage - walked over to whatever smaller tent was closest to us just to sit and take a few minutes. As we're walking I found a fully loaded glass piece!! Nobody anywhere around the area - the shows in the tents hadn't even started yet. I guess somebody had had a little too much fun on Thursday evening.
We have camped in BFE the last 2 year and we never have had any problems with theft. Even thouhg last year we camped by some "shady" people, we just tried to use common sense most of the time.

last year my friend was moving his car on sunday morning....not sure why....strange night, weird decision, so we were riding his truck out to the street and gonna walk back in....well on the way out some wook guy opens his cooler from the bed of the truck and grabs a gallon jug of some sweet tea and just cracks it open and chugs it down....hands down, most asshole move of anyone at any roo I've attended. but in terms off ground scores....this was weird sketch guy was camping by me and me group last year and he was begging me for some somthing and I told him only if sold my buddy some of the crazy hydro hed shared with me earlier so hes soooo spun out and wanting some crap that he just gives my buddy his bag right out of his pocket, deal was done and almost forgot his cash....then upon inspection the bag that was riddled with holes had 3 one gram bublehassh pieces.....that was a major score.

did anyone find my bag of greens i dropped in centeroo sunday last year??
or mine for that matter?
i dropped a bag probably right by the main stage gates in the far right turnstile. probably 10 steps in, i went to smoke a bowl and realized i had lost my herb. we were saddened
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
one time at a Phish show I handed over a bag to a kid who had just been left by his friends and was looking for cash to get a ride home.. I told him I had no cash, but I could give him this bag..he looked at me with these big, watery eyes and just said "Thank you." and gave me a big hug. he offered to pack my bowl up, but I told him he needed it more than I did.. I got more a few minutes later from a chick who saw me do it, and was touched that I did that out of the kindness of my heart.. she sold me a quarter of some heady sh*t for 10 bucks ;D

Last year on Saturday night right before the entrance to Centeroo, I was moving my little stach kit, that contained various substances, to in my underwear. We were with another couple and the girl was starting to get on my nerves, always whining.....well anyways I was so bothered by her I guess I was not paying attention and went into the main entrance and had no problem getting in and then went to pull my stash out of my underwear and suddenly it was gone. I was like holy shit.....So I followed my path out to where we were standing and low and behold I found my film canister. I could not hardly believe it...there on top of all this mud and all the traffic and it was there....It was like Christmas....If some one would have found this they would have been a very very happy person

Back at deer creek 04, my friend found a BIG bag of yayo in the port a potty. We hung out there for awhile, and no one came a lookin, so it ended up fueling the rest of the run....Ive defintely contributed to the ground score myself, she is both a generous and taxing mistress. The groundscore giveth and the groundscore taketh away.
Bonnaroo '04 I dropped a glass jar that contained in the neighborhood of 200 dollars worth of varying substances on Friday Afternoon and realized later that night that my stash was gone. Late Friday night after the midnight shows and Saturday for 30 minutes when I woke up I searched high and low and my efforts were harshed. Then I went to take care of a little light work at the port-o-john. When I returned, One of my buddies from high school from a different campsite asked me if I wanted to buy any mali, to which I replied, I can't. I have to watch what I spend cause I lost my jar. I turned to the cooler to get a beer. When I turned back around, My buddy was holding the jar with about 90% of the supplies still in the jar. He said I had dropped it at his campsite Friday. I am as heterosexual as they come but I have never wanted to kiss a man so much in my entire life. Needless to say he was my best friend for Bonnaroo '04. He could have had the biggest ground score, and trust me he would have done it all, but he is my boy and I definitely dosed him free as hell that day.
