I'm at a party to celebrate our friend getting his PhD. There are 4 four lokos floating around.
I'm also the ONLY person to not have gone to RPI at this party. I kinda hate these nerds. They can't function in normal social situations. All they talk about is their research. They don't know anything else. It's sad.
I'm drunk though. So yay!!!!!!
Edit: "My Heart Will Go On" is on at the bar we just came to. Oh god. It's awful.
Edit 2: THEY ARE STILL TALKING SHOP. AT THE BAR. fuck.
I've been wearing the lady friend's Kavu bag for about half an hour. It's surprisingly comfortable.
Right after I posted this, two ladies in the line for the bathroom asked if it was my bag. When I stated it was my lady's bag, they told me I was a good man and a keeper, so I got that going for me.
Drunk Patrick buys a bunch of tickets. Sober Patrick may regret this tomorrow but it's too late to worry about that now.
Kamasi Washington > Snarky Puppy > Buckethead > Claypool Lennon Delirium > Silversun Pickups > The Arcs > Camp Lo/Digable Planets, all over the next few months. Might try to add more later. Let the summer series begin!

Absolutely unforgettable weekend with my love, showing her about town.
Thursday night, we started out the evening checking out a photo exhibition in the rear foyer of the Opera House, by a guy called Kevin Cummins. He's shot all the greats of Manchester / late 70s & early 80s punk and post punk. Bowie, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure, Patti Smith, you name it. Unfortunately I spent a little too long checking out the exhibit and not enough time lining up to get a book signed - the people at the front of the line got a proper chinwag with him, but I just felt fortunate enough to tell him how much I appreciated his work. Probably for the best because I might have gotten somewhat tongue-tied! He autographed his book for me (Manchester: Looking for the Light Through the Pouring Rain), which is an amazing portfolio of photos and stories of back in the day. Already treasuring it.
Then we headed into the main hall of the Opera House, where we saw New Order crush it! As backed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra - what a treat. There were a few sound issues in the first half of the show (it being the first show w/ the full orchestra), but all in all still a great performance. For Vivid, they do a lot of the crazy kind of exterior lighting inside the SOH, on the roof and sides of the Concert Hall - so combined with New Order's own light show, it made for a very immersive experience (especially in a certain... state).
Afterward we wandered around the Botanical Gardens to more Vivid-y stuff, then cabbed it across town to meet up with some mates of mine for our hip hop jam nights and drinks. Well... missed the actual jam, but still had fun. Monie said my friends are such hippies, and I told her those are my hip-hop friends, not my hippie friends. Just wait 'til I take her to a camping festival to meet my real hippie friends!
Friday we went back to the Opera House and saw an interview with Poliça (well... mostly the woman. The dude was like Silent Bob), and she talked about the inspiration for a lot of the songs, and how the project came together. There was a New Order talk on at the same time that I had also wanted to catch, but I would have been so lost in Poliça w/o hearing her explain it. And it was interesting, and also a great show. Monie has had a few "almost saw 'em but..." experiences with them, so it was nice to cross them off together at last.
Saturday, well... we had planned on some things. I wanted to see a local psych rock band (Los Tones) who were doing a ticketed house party. I've seen them open up for King Gizz a couple times. Also some more Vivid stuff. But the best laid plans of mice and men, as they say... recovery day.
Yesterday (Sunday), it was raining so we decided to do some indoorsy stuff (and maybe enjoy another nom or two of the special corn). We had entirely too much fun messing about at the aquarium, checking out dugongs and manta rays and clownfish, and getting all too excited for our trip north next weekend. Then we had some food and went on to watch Through the Looking Glass... in 3D... on the largest movie screen in the known universe. Also quite *ahem* immersive.
All told, one of my best weekends in a hot minute.
As many times as people have yelled homophobic or otherwise unnecessary expletives at me on the street, I don't know if I'll ever get used to burying the desire to stop and beat them half to death.
