Thanks y'all, that means a lot to me. Here is the status update:
We still haven't heard anything.
I applied for the parent plus loan and the school still hasn't finalized or told us what we are approved for. It is extremely stressful and makes me want to cancel all plans (including Riot Fest) in order to ensure it happens. I didn't get a homestead exemption, the assessor basically said that my house credit is correct and I don't get a tax break because of that. Capitol One would rather lose me as a customer than refinance my car. My AC compressor is starting to go out, so I might just trade in my car since I am not upside down on my loan to get a lower monthly price and APR. We are also stalking TOPS, which is basically free money to public colleges for students who have a high enough GPA and ACT, Kyle qualifies but they just haven't approved it yet. I don't understand how they can keep people in the dark about financing for college. If we don't qualify for the parent plus loan, which is what I am hoping for, we get an additional $2000 in financial aid, which would pay for our out-of-pocket portion of tuition and we would just have to come up with textbook money. I am probably going to ask my dad (ugh the strings that will be attached to that, I can't even think about) to cover the books regardless, because money is so fucking tight.
I know things could be worse, the lady I made friends with found out her daughter didn't even qualify for TOPS and had to come up with over $5000 for tuition, but the being in the dark is stressful as fuck. Everyday we check emails and make phone calls. I just hope they know what the fuck they are doing and everything falls into place with enough time to make it all happen.
For the past 6 months, one of my kids has been back and forth outta observation for autism. One diagnoses him with it, another observer says he doesn't have it. We're finally in that window that decisions have to be made for schooling and decided to pull him from his daycare and place him in a special education class. "You can always remove him if his situation improves", the school says. Sure. Lemme uproot this poor kid ANOTHER time because two adults have conflicting views on what's best for him.
Believe it or not, this I can cope with.
The straw came yesterday when the audiologist called back to inform me his ears are abnormal and will require surgery to fully fix those. So now, right before I put this kid on a bus to go somewhere else (sans brother, which has become a very big deal to the two of them), I have to put this kid through surgery.

Aw friend I'm so sorry to hear this. I know it has been such a long and emotional process for y'all, trying to figure out what's going on w him and what the best course of action to take might be.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

i'm so sorry you guys are going through this. the good news is, you guys are willing to step up and do what is best for him. i've worked with many kids who would have gotten great benefits from early intervention, but the parents were in denial that their child may be atypical. i hope that you get some answers, and that his surgery is quick and painless.

Have you guys considered student loans? I believe you don't have to start payments until 6 months post-graduation (or dropping out, but I don't think you have that to worry about). You could save for the next couple years to pay it off before payments begin...? I may be wrong on how that works. JR took out student loans and we're cracking down this year and paying them off, finally. We decided marriage, 2 kids 16 months apart, JR's college, and finally house was the order to do things...

That is the parent plus loan. Kyle has already filed but the estimated amount will not cover all of his college expenses. The breakdown is as follows: TOPS: $2709 FASFA: $2800-ish Pell Grant: $2000-ish (literally $600 less than we were estimated by FASFA) Leftover we have to cover: $1853 (Can you believe that is only ONE semester?)
When I applied I clicked to defer them for the 6-months after graduation. He is majoring in Computer and Electrical engineering and has told me that any loans that we both incur he will pay back after graduation. That is with the assumption that he gets offered a job, like the 70% of engineering graduates have in the past right out of college.
Freshmen's have to live on campus for the first year, so between that and the meal plan tuition is about $9700/semester not including books.

That is crazy! JR got half his schooling done in the Navy... The other half, he did online, and got about $40k in student loans total. (He had the GI bill, but um, we were using that on diapers)... I'm hearing how lucky we have it lately... A teacher friend of mine has almost triple digits in student loan debt. She said she's not sure they will ever get paid off with her salary. Sounds like Kyle is going into a great field. JR is a Network Architect and does well financially.

The dean or president (I can't remember which was which) of the engineering college told us how much the lowest job offer was to graduates last year and it was over 3x what I make and I don't make very much; one of the reasons I was freaked that FASFA didn't cover everything especially since his father isn't alive, they only have my income to go off of.
A co-worker's daughter just graduated from NYU with an anthropology major and over $150k in student loans (what a waste of money). Plus, the co-worker had to do the parent plus loans as well, since FASFA didn't pay for her daughter's education, and she has over $50k in student loans for her daughter. When I hear shit like that, it really brings it back into perspective for me. Kyle will graduate with between $50k-$80 depending on his living situation after freshman year. Pretty sure he is going to get an apartment with college friends after this year and that will save us $5000/semester and bring tuition back down to that $5000 mark due to not having to pay for the meal plan and the housing. He is doing the work-study if he qualifies or getting a campus job if he doesn't qualify, so that will be all on him decision-wise after his first year.

I'm so sorry you're family is going through this. My sister went through the same thing because her son was missed diagnosed with autism. It really wore on them and he was prescribed medication Je didn't need. I'm sure you and your wife are doing everything you can and are amazing parents. Hopefully the surgery will will go well and he will have a quick recovery. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks. I have removed myself from the driver's seat so to speak and have given the reins to Kyle. We got a bill for $9315 due August 9 and Kyle called them regarding it. We are supposed to hear something next week. Fingers crossed. Since this is his future I am trying not to stress and freak out, but it is kind of what I do. Plus, what mother doesn't want to do everything in her power to make sure her kid can go to the college that they got accepted into?
But thank you. It means a lot. I will post an update probably next Wednesday, which is when Kyle will be calling if he hasn't heard by then.

I would guess he would be elgible for the federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans which would be preferable to the parent plus and should cover pretty much everything the pell grant doesn't.
Its possible they just haven't processed those offers yet. At Arizona those were always the last things to be processed and sometimes I wouldn't get the money until the second or third week of classes. Definitely something I would ask about at least.
Either way I would almost guarantee he can talk to the financial aid office and get a hold on his account that will prevent any issues with paying after August 9th. Just tell them there are some issues getting aid in order and they can probably push it back at least a month.

Everything has submitted, the estimated breakdown was based off our financial aid submissions. We have called every other day for the last two weeks and finally got movement today. All financial aid is received and satisfied but they have not offered us any awards. So we still don't know if we are approved for anything. I got Kyle to call in regards to the updated status and they are still working on his awards package and he should receive an email before the end of the week. I am assuming that the package will include qualified student loans, TOPS, pell grants and whether or not I got approved for parent plus loans to cover the remaining amount.
They have already told us, that there is no extension on the August 9 due date. If the award doesn't come in, or if he doesn't get any awards (or we still owe money after the awards) he will have to pay the balance if he wants to go this semester. All payments are due August 9. If we get approved for any assistance AFTER that date, we will get a reimbursement for the funds paid.

That's seriously fucked up. Is there some kind of minimum threshold you can pay to be eligible for classes, or is it the full amount?

I can setup a payment plan and pay a fourth...you know $463.25.
It is ridiculous. I am not really sure what is going to happen at this point. I am sorta hoping that my dad comes through in the clutch, but we won't know until August 7.
EDIT: As of now since nothing has been approved we technically owe $9753 for the first semester, which we received an invoice for already and is due on August 9. A fourth of that is $2438.25.

I honestly don't know. The school has told us repeatedly that he can only get a loan if he is turned down for financial aid and if I don't get approved for a parent plus loan. I personally never went to "college" I went to a vo-tech, they did everything right then and there when I applied, so I have no idea of what we can or can't do other than what the college is telling us. I am honestly just hoping and praying that the package (which I am assuming is the award offering) comes in by Friday like they told Kyle.
I have not done anything today, since it is his birthday and I am giving him a day off of hounding the school over financing. So I am unsure if TOPS has emailed him his award because I know that they are definitely one of the holdups. If they don't get the TOPS award amount by Friday I am assuming that they are going to push all other financial aid through and we will know what we owe and if we can do this or not. It really sucks that it is coming down to the wire like this, but I have talked to friends that have put their kids through college and they have all told me it all happens last minute.
This is probably one of the most stressful things that I have ever had to do. Everything for school in the past has never been this much of a roller coaster and worry. It is the pits.
EDIT: I am a bad mom, I hacked his email (he gave me his password) due to an email that I received. Still nothing, but he has several job offers on campus. One of the emails talks about getting all financial aid stuff in ASAP (we already have). I hope this means we will be fine. Fingers crossed.

What an absolute nightmare!!! If it makes you feel any better, you have given me some real insight on our future planning. <3
Just learned last night, that my best friend's son's girlfriend, just had to push back her enrollment to next semester due to the same issues. This is really starting to freak me out. I was doing ok until I was told that.

Supposed to have kidney stone procedure tomorrow. Find out today they are expecting $6000 at the time of procedure. I do not have this money. Going crazy trying to contact insurance and doctors and employers who handle my stuff....very stressful and frustrating. Grrr

I am so sorry that you are having the surgery and the insurance issues. For my MRI and my colonoscopy I had to pay upfront because the companies didn't know what my insurance would end up paying. They ended up reimbursing me later on. Neither were over $1000 but both were close, nowhere near that insane amount of $6000. I mean who would be able to come up with that much green? So ridiculous. Hope everything works out for you.
Kyle just got all of his shit in for the financial aid! They have not added my parent plus loans on it. The financial aid office is inundated with callers, meaning that they just did all this for everyone that is outstanding. We have to come up with even more now. This is a fucking joke.
EDIT: Still can't get through, but I noticed that the estimated amount has transportation and books and supplies so that is not correct. The amount we owe is about what they said it would be, just a little more. Trying to find out about my parent plus loans which will end up covering the rest even if not approved, since they throw in $2000 additional financial aid if I don't get approved. We would just have to figure out books.

Hopefully they get their shit together soon or they're gonna have a lot of pissed of parents on there campus. Also, this is a real shitty first impression to make on a first year freshman. Edit: Woops, just saw your edit. I'm glad that you are feeling better.

I agree, but I think their thinking is it is the parent that is one that is handling most of this, and like me, most parents will do everything in their power to make their kid's dreams come true. I am just really glad that they have awarded him money. They have updated the invoice to reflex that the pell grant and TOPS (free money) have come in. Now if they will update it with the financial aid, so it shows the real total and not $4500 left over.
I feel like we are kind of in the homestretch and hopefully my dad (I can't believe I am saying this) takes care of the rest, since I can't. I will take whatever strings he attaches to doing it I guess.
UPDATE: I spent all morning trying to get in touch with financial aid about my parent plus loans, since we still have to come up with monies for tuition and books. I was on hold two separate times for over an hour each (I had to hangup the first time because I am at work). I started calling at 8:40am and finally got on the phone with a real person at 11:30am. The conversation lasted less than 5 minutes. They don't have my parent plus loan on file, the person that handles those is in meetings until at least 4:30pm, they will call me back after 8:30am tomorrow morning hopefully with some news. Fingers crossed it is all good once they call me back.
Also, I don't want to ever sit on hold with them again due to the fact that they play zydeco music while you are on hold.

Rent textbooks from amazon. I'm sure you know this already. Especially for the classes that he'll never touch the book again.
