So I was trying to think of a way to make some extra money to help fund my many shows and festivals this year. A fellow inforooster suggested babysitting.
My question is, would you go on craigslist to find a babysitter? I'm usually done at work by 3, and i have weekends off, so i'd have plenty of time to help someone out all week. i'm just not sure if most parents would trust someone from craigslist to stay with their kids.
I know in my town a lot of people advertise on the bulletin boards in the cafe and grocery and any kiosks. Also the local paper does really cheap ads and lots advertise there.
One person in town uses a picture of her on the flyer she has on kiosks and on the community listserv many have commented that they have used her because they could see she looked like a nice and non-psycho person and that made her ad more appealing.
Speaking of which... find out if there are any community Yahoo groups, listservs, especially for parents (Mommy & Me, etc.). I know my community has a weekly Mommy & me at the cafe in town; good time to show up, pass out some cheapo little pieces of paper or business cards (recently at vistaprint.com for $5 incl. shipping I got a box of business cards - google for promo codes before checking out and you can get an amazing deal there on paper products!).
hippie - YES - do it - I am on a message board with about 40 moms - most of them use craigslist when they need to find a babysitter - 'specially if it is for several weeks or so - they will interview and then make a decision

awesome!! i will definitely do it, then. what is a reasonable price for a babysitter?
^^^I think the going rate is anywhere between $6-10 an hour - depends on if you are doing just childcare - light housekeeping - transport of children - playrgoups - that kinda stuff
reliable sitters are worth a fortune. My daughter used to get so many phone calls I considered quitting my job to be her agent (sounds better than child-care pimp). If you get the business cards I always thought a great slogan would be: "Satisfaction Guaranteed or Double Your Children Back!"
craigslist is a good idea. also talk to friends. one of my friends got me a job. $15 an hour for 2 kiddies and i basically watched them for about 2 hours and then watched tv the rest of the time.
