My point is that the headline is 1 in 4 teenage girls has an STD... and the reality is that...it's 1 in 4 out of 50% having sex...so it's really 1 in 8...and of that 12%, less than 2% have something they couldn't have been vaccinated against...
That's .002%...1 in 500 is a little but less alarming than 125 in 500
My point is it's a sensationalist headline that doesn't mean anything...
the headline might not mean anything, but the issue stands. obviously having gone through the whole cancer thing i'm biased, but i'll be damned if someone is going to tell me that this is not a problem. sorry, but 14yr old girls should not have to go through the kind of crap i did, and i don't even have the virus.
kids are having sex, and more often than not, they aren't doing it responsibly. that's the bottom line. we can either ignore that, and put it all on the shoulders of the parents who probably aren't doing too much to help out in the first place, or we can do what we can to prevent this from getting out of hand.

It was CDC study funded by the government, not a druq company
True, but if you dig deep enough there will be a big pharma company behind it. They either lobbied for it through political connections or they directly applied for the grant to perform study.
Or maybe my distaste for the industry just puts a shadow on anything to do with them, and my conspiracy theories run wild. : )
I do not like corps that have such a conflict of ethics in their business model. Big pharma has a ethical obligation to maximize shareholder value and they also have an ethical obligation to create affordable and safe medications to people who are ill. Those two obligations don't always work too well together.

I did many reports on teenage sexual habits and pregnancies in my broadcast journalism classes and newspaper in high school.
the amounts of teenage girls who are pregnant in mississippi is shocking. My graduating class had 16.
A 12 year old 7th grader in my neighborhood recently revealed she was pregnant.
I don't know if there is a lack of knowledge available to the children, or if having sex is just a thing to do when you're younger.. but it's a serious issue, especially with the concern of std's.

in the end, does it really matter who is behind it if its actually a problem? is it better to just let it happen and do nothing?
I couldn't agree with you more. My issue is that there was no shocking headline from a study that came out until there was a dollar (or a billion) to be made off of it.
Which goes back to what koyaanisqatsi posted. Karma!
It's like that Chris Rock bit (who I can't wait to see btw) about AIDS cures. There's no money in the cure, it's the ongoing treatment that gets you paid.

The stats prove HPV is an issue...I agree...but the schools aren't going to start inoculating kids...ever...no matter who the president is...
This falls on parents and doctors...and it's a shame that that may not be enough...but that's reality.
well, i for one was never arguing that the government should force anyone to get it. would i want to see them highly promote it, yes. but force it on people, no.

its very true. another sad fact is that all the people who seem ready to help are the same people who don't have the money to do "enough"

In Mississippi - you ought to know after all you live here - it is more likely to be a lack of parental involvement on so many levels that lead to teenage girls having sex - and a lack of education that leads to teenage girls having unprotected sex.

As somebody who works at a Planned Parenthood who has a clinic in Mississippi, I can personally state that the lack of sex education in Mississippi is absolutely tragic.
I saw a banner the other day that said: "Their friends. Television. A backseat. Planned Parenthood. These are all places your child can learn about sex. Which would you choose?"....it's a very good point. Comprehensive sex education is absolutely critical to being healthy.
Sorry, but it's an issue that's close to my heart, esp. because of my job.

Listen, I've got it figured out don't steal your gouvernment hates competion besides how do you fight the people who make up the rules to suit there needs and of course thats all kept a big secret until everyone who's anyone is long forgotten or not even mentioned. Want proof of this. Look and listen to all thats said about NY exgouverner Spitzer a LAWYER Spitzer GOUVERNER Spitzer busted breaking the law not just NY law either. Why because of the attitude I can't get into trouble because I am the law. 1in 4 people in the united states smokes marajuana daily and we are still not capable of leagleization. Why? Because we don't get to really make the rules, we're told just follow them or else.
