Update: The schedule was announced this weekend along with some MAJOR additions like Puddle of Mudd , Los Lonely Boys and, oh boy I can't WAIT for this one....George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic! And North Mississippi Allstars and Dr John will be closing out the Festival on Sunday night....what a way to go out!
I'm going out on a limb and guessing that very few of you know anything about the Big Spring Jam music festival held every Sept in Huntsville, AL??? (Big Spring Park is where it is held, thus the name, it's actually a FALL festival.... ) It's gotten fairly big over the years, if you have heard or been to City Stages in Birmingham, it's similar in size, if not bigger than that now. It's a three day, 5 stage festival (no camping) the last full weekend in Sept. It's usually split pretty evenly between new ALT/Rock, Oldies Rock (which can be anything from 80's back), Country, Contemp Christian, and then just anything local or regional that they can book....you never know what you are going to get! I always volunteer (work a 2 hour shift each day and get in free all three days with free parking, can't beat it!).
Anyway, the first acts were announced this week. I'll try to post as many as I can find. Right off the top of my head I remember Soul Asylum and Jars of Clay, but there were a few others as well...
EDIT: Also Craig Morgan, Cracker, War, Pat Green, Lee Boys so far....MANY more announcements to come
War and Creedence Clearwater Revisited (the original Bassist and Drummer from CCR) have been added.....
Latest Adds Are: Seether, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Ingram Hill, (ok, my personal faves.... except the Seether part....notsomuch)
T. Broussard & the Zydeco Steppers, Brian Jack & the Zydeco Gamblers, and Terry & the Zydeco Bad Boys, (will be fun to go along with Dr John, no???)
Family Force 5, Needtobreathe, tobyMac, Barlow Girl, Altard, This Beautiful Republic, Falling Up, , Thousand Foot Krutch, Sawyer Brown and the Nashville Star Tour, The Road Hammers, Earl Thomas Conley, and Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband.
Just looking around to see what other festivals are going on this summer and saw this thread. I went there either last year or the year before I cant remember. It was an insane drive to Huntsville and it rained the whole time up there (we were only going to see The Black Crowes and Don Williams) and we kept thinking it was a bad idea, but fuck it you only live once. Interesting festival, it was like a smaller City Stages (like you said earlier) or Music Midtown. The only Black Crowes show I have seen stage diving and crowd surfing at. The driver of our entourage got us lost on the way there and I was drunk when we left (sobered up on the ride over only to start it over again once we got there). We stopped at the band Alabama's Fan Club warehouse thing (damn thing was as big as 3 wal-marts).....it was closed......i was dissapointed. Nothing like a spur of the moment trip to Huntsville and why the hell do they call it Big Spring Jam .....its in the fall! Insert one of the millions of jokes I'm sure you've heard about Nasa being in Alabama. Haha damn one hell of a trip (I cut out a lot of illegal activity)!
That is hysterical ;D....But so true! You never know what to expect....it's always an adventure...I can't wait to see what happens this year....was really getting down to Evans Blue last year when a GIAGANTIC THUNDERSTORM rolled in and forced them to cancel the rest of th night....one of the first times ever.....live festivals whatchagonnado??? But a few of the acts went into the civic center and did their shows....it was so cool escape from earth was one.....I am hoping Breaking Benjamin comes in....they were at City Stages....they may make a return appearance at Big Spring Jam....
Yeah, the Rocket Science jokes are a must! No one believes that North Alabama has more engineers per capita than almost anywhere else in the world!
I haven't even looked at City Stages lineup or if i have i don't remember who is playing this year. I wanted to go last year, but it was the same weekend as 'Roo. They had Allmans, Mule, Derek Trucks band and a bunch of other good ones on one day. The year before it was great seeing NMAS, Mule, then Black Crowes on one stage back to back to back exactly a week after 'roo. I think it was two years ago that I went to the Big Spring Jam......I just remember that Herman Hermits were there too.....jesus those crackers were old!

Yeah! City Stages is the same weekend as Roo this year too! Only big deals this year for me were Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace....cross my fingers they will book them for Big Spring Jam...though they tend to get the really new alt bands for BSJ....the ones that haven't really hit yet....but that end up hitting the same year they play BSJ..... And Whiskey Falls is playing BSJ too...they are a pseudo country band....not really into country music...(at all) but I know one of the guys in the band...he is a total ROCK guitarist...played for the Alice Cooper band....played with Ted Nugent in Damn Yankees for a while....but hey, he is a MUSICIAN and he wants to make a living playing...so he finds a band...and this is where the money is now.....sigh...
So you're from Alabama and you don't like country.......you're missing out!!!! The radio sucks for country music, but you can't go wrong with some good ole Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillan Welch.......okay I'm gonna stop, you get the idea. Oh and is you're friend TOMMY SHAW, he's from Alabama I think??

Crystal Ball......is that the one w/ Lady Jennifer on it.......damn parents vinyl!!!And how sure Gillian is kinda folky, but how can you not see the country in her too.....caleb meyer, if that aint country!!What most people think of as country nowadays is what I call "pop".

LOL! OK I'll go with Gillian being country/folk....and Styx Crystal Ball is OLD AS THE HILLS.... Didn't say I bought it NEW! LOL! But I wouldn't call it out as COUNTRY.....Hee! Maybe pop-ish. though more classic IMHO....though I admit I'm an acoustic chick.....
WHAT??? acoustic country versions fo styx songs? I think I read that last one wrong. I wasn't saying Styx was country, but if tommy shaw playing show me the way on a dobro is your thing then by all means.....go ahead!! I was referring to my paretns shitty vinyl collection, I believe they have Crystal ball on vinyl, theres also Barry Manlow live and even some Rupert Holmes!!

Ok, my copy of Crystal Ball is NOT vinyl...LOL! You callin' me OLD?? And I own NOOOOO Barry Manilow. And who the heck is Rupert Holmes ??? Didn't he do porn movies or something?
For as long as I have lived in Huntsville, I still haven't attended a Jam.
You really need to fix that this year....I volunteered last year and had a blast! Even though musically it was one of the weakest years ever I am hoping they bump up the rock and alternative lineup - they usually do a decent job on the newer alt/rock acts....

They've had some bands I really really wanted to see, especially P-Funk but there's something about partying downtown at a HSV sponsored event that I can't put my finger on, that keeps me from going.

LOL! Yeah, not quite the "ROO" atmosphere I'll give ya! Laid Back just isn't something HSV knows how to do.... Too many Type A personalities (and just flat out A-holes!) But there are some cool people involved with the jam....that helps. I tried doing Panoply and - no way. Whole diff vibe. Panoply was all Right.On.The.Dot.Exactly.As.Written. engineering-like detail driven crap. The jam was like "come early for your shift and hang out, enjoy! do your shift, stay late, enjoy! Have fun! That's the point! No worries!" Mucho Mejor!
I actually have a good friend who lives in Huntsville who told me about the Big Spring Jam. From what he told me, it sounds like a pretty cool event. The line up for this year looks pretty good, although I don't really know how to feel about Creedence Clearwater Revisited. I don't see how they can call themselves CCR when John Fogerty was the only reason CCR had such great success and so many great songs. Sorry for the mini rant, I would probably see them anyway if I was going, but CCR without Fogerty seems pointless. Also, didn't the Big Spring Jam get canceled one year due to weather concerns?

Rupert Holmes doesn't do porn.........at least none that I've seen! He sang escape......that song about Pina Coladas......if you like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain, you know you have his greatest hits on 8 track.
But anyway, that lineup aint half bad. NMAS, Dr. John, The Lee Boys....I might actually go again.

Yeah, I agree CCR w/o Fogerty isn't going to be nearly the same, but I'll at least give them a chance. That'd be like saying Rage can't be Rage w/o Zach, and I couldn't do that to Tom! LOL! Even though it wouldn't be Rage it would still be awesome....
It has never been cancelled, but last year most of Sat night got washed out due to a really nasty Thunderstorm (I was there, I volunteered from 3-5, then was checking out Evans Blue when the nasty hit....) They made everyone get to a parking garage or the civic center or the Embassy Suites hotel. Most everyone left, but for the diehards that stayed, some of the bands played in the civic center or the hotel....and the people that stayed (I left since I was closer to the parking garage than the civic center) said they had a blast! Sunday went off without a hitch.

Nah, the victrola don't play 8 tracks.....just 78 rpms....
Yeah, I'm psyched about Dr John, LOVE NOLA music! Come on down!!!
I really do think I'm gonna go back to ole big spring jam......how far is huntsville far Nashville??
Not even an hour and a half via I65 - easy drive....better than from B'ham IMHO.... yeah, those Styx 45s gonna be tough dude! Gonna have to call Tommy in on those LOL!
Shit thats nothing! I'm definetly going now!!! When do they usually annouce the actual schedule....hopefully Dr John and NMAS are on the same day, but I ain't missing FOREIGNER for anything....cold as ice, jukebox hero, I wanna know what love is....I'm gonna go put on Double Vision and drink some really cheap beer!!!!

Unlike Bonnaroo, they keep the actual schedule posted at www.bigspringjam.org so you can know when everyone is playing. So the acts that are booked are booked for the times and days they are already booked for. And I'll buy you a beer dude, just for driving down and supporting us!
Hell yea....but its gotta be a cheap beer! PBR and Foreigner go hand in hand! And maybe I'm just an idiot when it comes to the internet, but I dont see where it says when they are playing, all i can find is this www.bigspringjam.org/_frames/lu-schedule-frame.html
