I’m getting the itch. We’ll be going to something soon.
Yeah man. I feel like I'm not really mentally right without live music. Maybe it's ocd or just a need for working my brainwaves, stimulation or engagement, IDK. It's probably a lot of things. I see everything from hardcore to rap to jazz to metal to street brass to rock to jam, folk, funk, bluegrass, EDM whatever. So I get a lot of different things out of the variety of types of shows I go to. Those are all missing components of life. Like my response said, I feel like I've been robbed out of a year. (blaming the former president for ignoring the pandemic and spinning it political for why it's taking so long for shit to work through).
Got the itch too, but I'm going to play it safe and not go see anyone until I can get vaccines. Hopefully that will be solved in the next couple months. I'd like to salvage some cool shit out of 2021. I'll mostly be over here, so it'll be Soul Kitchen in Mobile and Vinyl in Pensacola most of the time with mandatory trips to New Orleans every month - though unfortunately that means that I won't be able to get that many multiple shows a night/week since I won't be living over there like I'm used to. I didn't even look to see if anyone did a favorite shows in 2020 parody (or not) thread. Mine was Tool making them a repeat of opening night 2010 tour as favorite show of the year even if I only got in 7 or 8 before the pandemic.

when you hit up SK or Vinyl let me know. i've specifically got my eye on Vinyl and would love to catch a show there when it's as soon as it's safe. i'll go to almost anything they book when it's safe just to catch some live music.
Word. I'll let you know after I get my vaccines. It's a really cool venue with good sound. I haven't seen anything there in a couple years except a couple local acts. I'm pretty sure Filter and Coal Chamber was the last major show I caught there. I saw Living Color doing an anniversary show of the first album a couple years back too. But it's been a while. I know Longinus and Sgt. Blotter hit the Soul Kitchen, and I haven't been there or ever out in Mobile. So if they have some cool jam shows or freak shows, I'll try to hit those up and look for those guys too.
Ryman has some live shows. Next Monday will be two weeks after vaccination and at 95%. Probably going to go to a show. By myself. Sitting away from everyone. Wearing a mask.

So I was home in Philly last week and caught this band Lady HD outside at this new venue called Sunflower Philly. I think they're a pretty new band without a lot of material, but they absolutely killed it. Gave me strong Pond, early Tame Impala vibes, but if you listen to them on record they give me more of a Khruangbin vibe. The opener, a band called Rubber, was also pretty good. Lead singer has a very strong kind of Sam Smith like voice.

A massive country music festival in Kentucky this past weekend started off on rocky footing: Police found meth, marijuana, and an open bottle of alcohol in the first vehicle they stopped at a traffic checkpoint. One of the people in the car had two active warrants out for their arrest.
“We were like, ‘Well, this doesn’t bode well for the weekend,’” Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

I forgot about this thread! Should’ve dropped my Goose love here. Worth reiterating. They’ll be showing one of their recent Ohio sets on their YouTube channel tonight at 8 PM ET for anyone who missed my alert in the lineup discussion thread that it’s worth the time in!

This is right on the verge of relevant, but I went and saw Craig Robinson and a handful of comedians last week in Cincinnati.
The three openers were tolerable, boring and pretty funny in that order, but nothing could have prepared me for Craig Robinson. He came out and was struggling to stay upright on his stool. Immediately got on the mic to ask for water and just generally acted trashed for the first 30 minutes. He didn't really perform so much as allow the audience to do karaoke while he played keyboard riffs. This went on for a long time.
Eventually he did a few more shots on stage and got a little tipsier. One of the openers (the funny one) came out and sang while he noodled on the keyboard for a little longer. The funniest part of the whole night was when he asked a guy in the front row what his name was, and the guy said Dangus. For my first live show in 15 months, it succccccked.

Tangentially related to Dale's story: We went to a comedy show last weekend when we were in Asheville. One of those things where it popped up in Facebook events and we said why not? The two headliners were Drew Morgan and DJ Lewis. At multiple points in the evening, it was referenced how country DJ Lewis sounds like. The last bit of the evening was DJ telling a story while Drew translated it into comprehensible English. As you might expect, both the lady and I followed everything DJ said all night without difficulty and could completely picture the story in our heads. It made me think about my ATV story from a couple weeks ago, and I laughed thinking about how crazykittensmile probably would not understand him or the story (there was an ATV involved). Anyway, if you want an example of the accent, this is from his twitter.
Had a busy week; it was one thing seeing some great DJs perform but it was another thing to see a band again:
Saw Ganser on Saturday and FACS today; I'm grouping them together here because they're both phenomenal Chicago bands and both at least dabble in post punk sounds. But their approaches couldn't be more different: Ganser have a bit more groove and FACS turn up the volume. I saw them both at the Empty Bottle, a club where it's difficult to *not* stand right next to the stage, and the whole time at both shows just stood there entranced. There's a certain physicality to seeing shows like that in a small club - seeing the strings on a bass vibrate, having a singer call out a guy smoking in the club because "it's not the 80s anymore", watching a drummer's sweat drip off his face and bounce off the floor toms, and *feeling* the noise vibrate through your body - that I really, really missed.
I also won tickets for Hoobastank and Everclear on my birthday. I was quite drunk at the show but was kind of shocked with how good Hoobstank was; the singer said he injured his leg and was still bouncing around on stage like crazy. The singer from Everclear's voice was *rough* live so I didn't enjoy that as much. Sadly, I missed the opener Wheatus so I am unable to have an opinion about them, and I'm kind of upset I missed them because it seems like they've just been adding more and more members over the years and are now inexplicably a 7-person band. Buuuut overall it was nice to be able to see a show with some bands I don't really listen to a whole lot and it was a nice surprise to find out that Hoobastank is Good, Actually!
I'm so happy I've been able to full cap shows again.
First show back in a year and a half was American Aquarium at Gruene Hall (sorta talked about it in shuck 's country thread) and it was fantastic. They are such a tight live band that it's not even funny. I think they played for two hours and the interaction between BJ (their singer) and the crowd was just awesome. Video attached below for my favorite part of the night:
Also went to see Randy Rogers and Wade Bowen's acoustic tour last week and having seen both individually multiple times, their acoustic tour is still a much better experience in my opinion. They're a lot looser and you can tell that they genuinely enjoy being on stage together. The stories they tell and their interactions with each other make it such a great time.
Saw ZZ Top tonight in my hometown with a couple of family friends. It was really good but the highlight was when Billy Gibbons came on my mom turned to me and said “Your grandma has a sparkling denim jacket just like that.”
Japanese Breakfast Sat. night was great. Hadn’t been to a show in 16 months. It was a good one to jump back in to. Mannequin Pussy had the worst sound problems I’ve ever experienced in all the shows I’ve seen. I think it was the 5th song before they switched mics so that we could actually hear the vocals. After that she begged them every song that she needed her vocal effects fixed and no one ever did anything. Never seen anything like it. They still powered through and played their whole set.

that sucks about the sound. glad you had a good show though.
i always wonder what is going on when i'm at a show and one of the band members signals after every single song they need more volume in their monitors. i know i'm not a sound guy but i know how to turn the volume up on things.

It was more than just turning it up. But like I said no one even attempted to fix it till 4 or 5 songs in. But all they did is switch mics. The new mic didn’t have any of her vocal effects hooked up to it and no one ever came to fix it. She asked for help after every song and got nothing. It was crazy.

I caught that tour on Wednesday. It felt extra good as it was also the kickoff date for the bands, so it was the first-time for both performers and audience members. Definitely recommend seeing them if you get a chance.

Bright Eyes and Lucy Dacus were lovely last night. I was enjoying myself so much I didn't even care about people talking through the show and my normal pet peeves. So nice to be back at a show!

It was crazy how quickly the old pet peeves returned. Why do people in front of you constantly want to move back into your space? Also I’m on the soundboard rail. I literally can’t move in any direction.

I was just happy it didn't thunderstorm, and we got Poison Oak!

Yea it was good to be at a show annoyed by people again.
Orville Peck!! I know I’ve said he doesn’t have the…you know what, but I did not know that live he plays all his songs about 20% faster, which adds a much needed jolt to some of the dreamier ballads. Plus, the sequencing of the set list is excellent and there’s also occasional choreography which never hurts. He did a really good Waylon Jennings cover but the encore was his “Born This Way” cover, which I’m personally not a big fan of. I wish he’d have done “Fancy” instead!
A parting quote: “I love truckers. I wish there was a FarmersOnly, but for truckers.”
Gonna guess just Born This Way; the Waylon cover was really good but I can’t see how it fits into an hourlong set.
Damn it. That's what I was thinking too. It's unfortunate bc he has a bunch and nails them in general.
My best guess at an Orville festival setlist: Summertime/Roses are Falling/Turn to Hate/No Glory in the West/Big Sky/Nothing Fades Like the Light/Drive Me Crazy/Queen of the Rodeo/Legends Never Die/Take You Back/Born This Way
(But also, it’ll be identical to whatever he plays at Lolla in an hour.)
