Saw Earthless at a recordshop/bar in LA last night. Super small venue only around 100max cap. Fucking slayed!! I love how they played for almost an hour and a half but I think we got 3 songs maybe 4 lol. Got to hang with John Dwyer at the bar, he was cracking jokes and having a good time. Got to say hi to the band afterwards.. overall a great night!
Friday is Bon Iver and Saturday is Chicano Batman, should be a hellva weekend!

Saw Wilco last night in Santa Barbara for the first time since 2013. I'm a casual Wilco fan, so a big incentive for my attendance was Faye Webster opening, as I really like her latest album. And honestly...eh. Not the most compelling performance. You can blame it on her softer style, but I saw Phoebe as a support act in the same venue several years ago, and even Phoebe filled the space's sound better.
As for Wilco, tight set as always. I admittedly haven't kept up with their last few albums, so I appreciate how deeply they dig into the back catalog. Highlight was "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", a song which I very much did not expect them to play, especially at a venue with one of the strictest curfews around (I've seen bands get the plug pulled there).
Saw 100 gecs tonight. Aaron Cartier opened; I wasn't impressed. The show was 95% him bouncing around on stage and 5% rapping, with the audience doing 100% of the work to bring the energy. Also, it got painfully loud (like, honest to god, close to MBV doing "You Made Me Realise" live level loud) towards the end.
But 100 gecs themselves were very good. They played for 45 minutes, half new stuff, half 1000 gecs. I've got a feeling the new songs will somehow be even more divisive than anything they've put out before; about half the new songs were basically straight up pop punk songs with voice modulation. There were two new ones I liked: one was an instrumental that setlist.fm helpfully calls "instrumental", the other was a song called "Billie Knows Jamie" that had a lot of clear nu metal influence and Laura Les doing a pretty funny spoken word part about Matt Damon. I liked all the 1000 gecs songs but also I've listened to that album countless times so I'm biased. Also, I appreciate Laura and Dylan always throwing in a couple surprises, like a musical interlude that involved smashing xylophones or an acoustic version of "gecgecgec", as well as their continued unwavering commitment to wearing wizard robes in public.

She said that she played solo in Copenhagen and that caused her to chat more. They got like 4 songs aswell lmao. Kinda feel bad for them tho.

IDLES was great in Nashville last night. Played almost everything I wanted to hear, had a ton of energy. I assume they will wreck the stage at Shaky Knees this weekend.
Dan Snaith: Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun Sun
Great showb from caribou and a great crowd, took some of their new songs in a direction I didn't expect. The production on the vocal samples were lost a bit live but allowed for more mind blowing jam outs

How long was Caribou's set? Debating whether to see them again after Firefly.

90 minutes plus? just guessing as my phone was off
saw Action Bronson last night, pretty terrible crowd but he was awesome. He got strongman level fit during the pandemic and as a result his breath control was crazy and he rapped almost every word to his songs. glad that he started taking care of himself

I was on the fence about going to that. When I saw him at OSL a few years ago, he sucked. Good to hear he's doing better now.
Does Jungle have a bad song? Not a single moment of last night's show did I think "now's a good time to grab a drink." It was just bop after bop the whole set. I know not everyone likes how strikingly similar their live shows are compared to the albums, but I really dig it. It's such a level of craftsmanship that not many bands can do. The only fault to their set was how early "Keep Moving" was. Thanks to work, we barely got in in time to hear that one.
No. They do not have a single bad song. I saw them on Friday for the 4th(?) time and it was so goddamn good. Their live shows started fucking excellent in 2014 and they're still fucking excellent in 2021. The set and lighting setup has absolutely leveled the hell up though, dear lord.
I've had a really great run these last couple weeks of MMJ> Sylvan Esso> Future Islands> Sheer Mag> Orville Peck, some of the best shows I've seen in a loooong time too

Last week of Rocktober round-up:
Found a cheap last-minute ticket to the Bon Iver self-titled anniversary; paid more for parking than I did for admission! First time checking out the new YouTube theater, and Los Angeles has needed a new indoor amphitheater with quality sound (i.e. not the Shrine) ever since they tore the Gibson down for Harry Potter World. I'm happy to report it's a good venue, although I'm sure much credit goes to Justin Vernon and crew for their very catered sound production for these shows. I first saw him on the self-titled tour, so it was neat to see that same stage replicated.
Next, Bat for Lashes did a special one-off piano show, which was neat. Show was short, but it felt special to hear what she explained were basically the demo versions for these songs before she would bring a full band into the studio. Also surprisingly my first time at the Lodge Room, and I always appreciate a venue in a part of town with free parking.
Lastly, Soccer Mommy last night. I'd been wanting to see her for a while, and "Color Theory" was my quarantine soundtrack for several months. So while these songs didn't quite have the fondest of associations, they were nice to finally hear live (the "Crawling in My Skin" outro goes off). Honestly, her backing band is the best part of her show. Much louder than I expected, and really adds some extra oomph to her songs.
Tame Impala next week is the final show of 2021 I actually have tickets for (monitoring Caribou prices, though). I have Courtney Barnett tickets for December, but I think I'll be out of town unfortunately. If that indeed marks the end of my concert year, it's been a damn solid last two months returning to regular show attendance. Here's hoping for more consistency in 2022!
Chris Stapleton absolutely ripped last night. I was worried he'd go a bit lighter on his voice and the setlist given he just got off of vocal rest but nope, that man fucking SAAAANG. Setlist was awesome, the people I were around were great, and this being my first time seeing him, I'm already very much looking forward to the next. (also Morganne wasn't there on stage with him unfortunately, he told us it was because she was nursing a sick kid back home.)
This is also the last show I have tickets to this year although I might end up seeing the Toadies while I'm back home for Christmas. This is the most shows I've been to in a month ever since I've started regularly going to shows and I didn't have a bad experience at any of them. Super excited for 2022.
Benny The Butcher was really fun last night, Westside Gunn came out for an appearance too along with some others (Rick Hyde, 38 Spesh and some others I didn't know)

Saw Stapleton a little while back. That man has a quacking voice and equally amazing songs. Tuesday is MMJ for me. It won’t be late night Roo, but I will be completely razzle-dazzled the entire time. Haven’t seen MMJ since they last played Roo. And that self-titled album is growing on me like a giant cyst of love.
Wolf Alice last night were incredible. New songs sounded even more fantastic live and the crowd knew every lyric. Ellie vocals are something else in person. How this band isn’t bigger in the states escapes me. Easily best show of the year.

?? Where was Benny playing at?
Patio Theater off Irving Park. Fucking sucks, it'd take someone real good to get me to go back there
First of all, every time I come in this thread, I find it remarkable that it's been around for 17 years (tried to find a way to work a Ratatat joke into this but couldn't. I'm sure you're all disappointed). Also went back and checked and I've been in this thread now for six years as well. Just kind of wild how time can fly!
Anyway, had kind of a crazy Halloweekend. I'm just going to go down the list:
-Aaron Raitiere: A solo acoustic guitar country guy. No complaints, he was pretty enjoyable and he had a very strong commitment to holding his guitar at a constant 45 degree angle, which I appreciated!
-Hailey Whitters: So the whole reason why I was at this show in the first place is that I won free tickets for it. The headliner was Midland, a band I do not care about at all, but I am a huge Hailey Whitters fan so I was very excited that I could make it out for this! She was fucking great, she's got a lot of charisma and her band was really great. And she didn't even do "Janice at the Hotel Bar"! (Which was a disappointment tbh but oh well.) Also she wore a denim skirt with rhinestoned corn on it which was insanely endearing. Met her after the show and had a quick chat about what a shame it was that Bonnaroo got cancelled etc. etc.
-Djunah: Made it across town for this show. Djunah is a Chicago band that call themselves "noise-rock" but at least live is kind of a lot thrashier than they might let on. Frontwoman Donna Diane sings, plays the bass parts with a Moog foot pedal (??) and does that insane thing some people do where they play the lead and rhythm parts at the same time. Just an utterly insane level of performance and pretty easily the highlight of my weekend. All the metalheads here would love them.
-High on Fire: ...but I really know you animals would love this shit even more! This was my first time seeing them; I know you guys love Matt Pike, and yeah of course he was great so I'm not even going to mention that. Instead, I'd like to highlight drummer Coady Willis, who apparently just started touring with the band this year but was putting in serious work and sounded like he'd been with them forever. Honestly for whatever reason a lot of times at shows a solid 50-70% of my attention is on the band's drummer and I would not have been able to tell that he was a new addition! You know what fucking sucked though? Before the show they had these incredible knight-themed t-shirts (that aren't on the online store, I've checked!) and then magically once the show was over they were all sold out. To whoever bought all these shirts *during* the show: fuck you.
-Lido Pimienta: I don't know why I assumed she'd have a full band but she very much did not, just her and a drummer. Great voice, great enormous fucking dress, and some great, kind of over-the-top stage banter between songs.
-Sylvan Esso: So, it turns out that if your show's instrument budget consists of just two microphones and an Ableton controller, you can spend a shitload of money on some crazy-ass lights. To be clear, I loved this band's surprisingly intricate light set-up; it was really what made it more unique than the WITH show I saw last month (still only last month somehow?). The WITH show was better, but I also now think a significant portion of that was due to the fact that because of their limited time frame, they basically had to play all their high-energy songs right up front. Without a time limit and with only two people, they're basically able to play all their songs, but that also means they're going to play all their slow songs too. Like, whenever they play "HSKT" live I kind of wish they'd just play house music all the time or whatever but the stylistic variety is probably what makes them interesting in the first place. But! I always like seeing them so I can't complain too much.
All right that's it. I have basically no shows this month (somehow I still haven't bought an MMJ ticket yet despite threatening to do so for a while, someone yell at me to do that within the next 75 minutes before I pass out) so I'll see you all on the other side!
