saw My Morning Jacket tour opener last night. what can i say about My Morning Jacket to inforoo? they are an awesome band.
setlist was an even distribution of songs from It Still Moves and forward. the band sounded great and the production was awesome. lighting obviously made for a bigger theater, so it was extra impressive at the Saenger, which is under 2,000 cap. in continuing with my growing pride in my city, it was nice to hear Jim James say nice things about it. this was his first time getting to really walk around Mobile, he said the city was absolutely beautiful. he shouted out Haunted Book Store and Nova Espresso which got big cheers from the crowd.
there were still some tickets available but it felt plenty packed. crowd was enthusiastic and having a great time.
of course during the show i thought a lot about the upcoming MMJ late night set. it's gunna be awesome. i'll still have to be at Korn but looking forward to seeing the last 30 (or hopefully 45) minutes of the MMJ set.
The Cure were incredible last night. 3 hours, 29 songs, 2 encores. And they still didn't cover a ton of other songs like Disintegration, Why Can't I Be You, How Beautiful You Are, etc. They could easily play 5 hours and have songs left over. Truly one of the best bands of all time. My friend had told me he had floor tickets but I didn't expect it to be the first row! Robert's voice sounded the best in the 4 times I've seen them. It's just getting better with age. And the new songs sounded fantastic! Like they haven't skipped a beat.
like Postjack said yesterday, not much to say about My Morning Jacket around here that hasn’t already been said.
finally got to see them last night while they performed their first show in Mississippi! was a really solid setlist with one new song getting a live debut and some others being a little less common; light show was fantastic and was really impressed by what they put together in a venue that i didn’t even know held concerts. Jim James is such a talent and just held the crowd in the palm of his hand all night.
saw one fan gave their 100th MMJ show last night, had another beside me who was at #43 with his parents who had gone to around 20 shows as well, even had the guy call the opener which was fun!
needless to say, i’m gonna have a hard time leaving their set at Roo at all now when i thought getting to see them here would make it easier for me to not feel guilt about leaving, guess we’ll see what kind of magic Jim and the other guys put on me at 1am
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

our favorite place in the city had their first birthday celebration last night. started with a dj set from documentarian and local legend rick sebak. mekki leeper did a stand up set, then a set from string machine. ended with speedy ortiz, who keep coming back just because sadie loves the venue. it was a special and fun night celebrating a place i've really grown to love in their first year open.

Saw indigo de Soulza it was decent. She was mad at the crowd tho for talking during the openers. Tbh I think she was kinda tripping. The crowd wasn't really being that annoying but idk maybe it sounded bad backstage
twiabp were a shell of their former selves last night, at this point its just weird to see them playing whenever, if ever bc most of the members arent in the band anymore.
hyped for Indigo tn but i wish she would still play Hold U lol imm obsessed w that song

Siouxsie was soooo good last night! it was her first US show in 15 years and we ended up having to wait an extra day because the Cruel World festival was evacuated due to severe weather that never arrived. Luckily they were able to reschedule the rest of the festival for sunday and it worked out great since we ended up with a longer set! her voice showed its age a few times but when she wanted to she showed that she can still sing her songs just like she always has. I grew up listeneing to her but I forgot about some of the songs she played since it's been so many years since I heard them. Iggy was at the same festival, so everyone expected a fun thing where he came out to sing The Passenger with her, but she ended up not even playing that song. instead she dusted off Israel for the first time in who knows how many years.
I sold my tickets to the cure so I could catch this show and I am so happy it all worked out! I was terrified that they would end up canceling sunday due to weather again, but it was a perfectly gloomy day for a goth festival in Pasadena.
Sisters of Mercy were awful last night. I had low expectations but they managed to drag them even further down. Usually when a band has only the remaining singer, that singer puts on a performance. Liam Gallagher for example. Instead, Andrews vocals were dogshit when you could actually hear him when the guitars weren’t overpowering them. Then to have no bassist at all when pivotal songs like Lucretia demand one? Just boggling why they couldn’t hire a session musician to play drums and bass. If I don’t have a free ticket, I would have been pissed.

Shame and Been Stellar were fucking amazing last nigt. Shame are rockstars in the making, so cool to see an up and coming British band in a small venue a month before they play to thousands at Glastonbury. Lead singer has a bit of Rollins meets Iggy meets Jagger vibe. Bassist was insane, doing full on somersaults while playing

billy woods & Kenny Segal were great last night. I think in 10 years people will look at woods' run of excellent albums these past few years the way people now see MF DOOM's in the mid 2000s. The songs from the new album Maps really hit well live, one guy up front kept trying to mosh to some songs which was pretty irritating though. Opener was local rapper Pink Navel who was excellent too, definitely checking out more of their stuff after this
Saw The Cure last night. Incredible. Played for almost 3 hours, 2 encores, Robert's voice is excellent. I've always been a more casual fan but I think the casual days are over now!

Went to both nights of The National at the Greek. They usually mix things up on multi-night stands, but they're really mixing it up this tour. Only 10 repeat songs out of 26 from the first night. (kinda surprised "I Need My Girl" and "System Only Dreams..." have both fallen into rotations) Not sure it will hold up later in the tour, but for now, Matt's voice sounds great and the rest of the band sounds excellent as always. Even the banter was funnier than usual. Both shows approached the 2:15 mark, so if you're not into the new album, you still get at least 90 minutes of old bangers you love.

Had a great run this month, one of my favorites in a while. All great shows but in order from most memorable to least:
1. Suzanne Ciani: Been waiting almost a decade to see her live and Ambient Church delivered. She played a semi-improved set on a Buchla, one of the earliest modular synthesizers, which has been her specialty since the 70s. It was basically watching a virtuoso with over 5 decades of experience. She had a quadrophonic sound set up so it felt like the beeps and boops were bouncing around my head and she'd occasionally get into some seriously heavy sounds that shook the pews.
2. Laurel Halo: Another act I've been waiting for over a decade to see, I was really happy to get a 2 hour DJ set from her. Definitely some unique selections, about as unpredictable as her own work, it was just enough to warm everyone up to the odd sounds before dropping some heavy bangers. Could have went another two hours and I wouldn't have minded.
3. Hermento Pascoal: Dude is almost 87 and had everyone in the palm of his hands. Frenetic jazz from Brazil that easily switched from smooth grooves to Zappa-esque controlled chaos. I want to say this was his first full US tour ever, at the very least his first in a long time. Had a fantastic band supporting him, I've never seen anyone rock a whistle and bust up tin pan like his percussionist. The most flute solos I've heard in a looong time too
4. Green Milk From Planet Orange: Crazy progressive rock mixed with hardcore vocals, acid rock guitar solos, metal drumming, and punk energy from Japan. Super high energy shred fest at insane volume levels.
5. Tim Hecker: Also extremely loud, apocalyptic ambient energy. Others have commented about his current tour and yeah, I agree it really blew me away. I saw him open for Sigur Ros ten years ago and fell asleep, no way was I sleeping through his current set. Helped me finally connect with his music but I wish he played a longer set.
6. Lucrecia Dalt: ¡Ay! was one of my favorite albums last year, and she definitely upped the music's drama live. She has such a lovely warm presence, in contrast to her dark and mysterious music, and her vocals sounded excellent.
7. Brijean: Fun dancey, west coast psychedelic grooves. She's played congas for acts like Toro Y Moi and US Girls, and while her own music isn't quite as memorable as those acts, I really enjoyed the airy and light vibez.
8. Salami Joe Rose Louis: In store performance at a local record store. Feel like these are becoming increasingly rare, its fun to see acts in slightly unusual venues playing unique sets. A bit of a sleepy set, but respect for playing around an hour for a free show.
God these guys fucking rip. Loving touch is about a 500 cap and it was not full, but I managed to get a little mosh going. Honestly I'm no sure if there's a better vocalist in rock right now and I know that's crazy to say but Luke is just so fucking good. What he's managing to do on guitar while singing is also mad impressive. They played a good amount from the new album but peppered in the hits. 5/5 show for me.
Paramore / Bloc Party - Rocket Mortgage Arena, Cleveland, OH
I don't know a ton of Bloc Party's music but they were a perfectly adequate opener for Paramore. Decent energy, good instrumentalism, and fun dancey songs.
Hayley is the best she's ever been, imo. She's all over the stage with some really fun dancing the whole entire show, without compromising her vocals of course. Earnest as ever with her crowd banter. Stage production is sick. The live versions make me like the new album more. She whips out a song from her solo album and they also let Zach feature a Half-Alive song. Setlist leaves a tiny bit to be desired from the old true punk pop stuff, but for a band that's been putting out legitimate hits for this long, that's to be expected. A nice representation from After Laughter which is great for my tastes. 4/5 overall.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Red Rocks was phenomenal! Was originally going to skip them, but found great seats for $20 a piece last minute! Karen O hasn’t aged a day in 20 years
got a little emotional and teared up during Lucy's quiet solo moment.
the venue we saw them at is one of those multi stage venues (2 inside, one big outdoor), and we saw Lucy there in 2016 play the small room to less than 50 people, so seeing her up there on the big stage with this massive crowd was super cool, and I was just happy for her.

Hell yeah! Getting hyped for seeing them twice this month
I think that was my favorite set from The Cure last night. Setlist was basically perfect and the pacing of the show with the long block of slower songs that lead into the dance party of a second encore was perfect. Cant wait to see them again this year. Probably the best show I've been to this year so far.
