Damn it yeshua. I didn't think to ask if you were going to that show.
I saw Dumpstaphunk on Friday, well part of their set anyways. They didn't come on until 1130 or so and I had to get up at 5am. From what I saw, I was impressed. I never knew that Tony Hall could play guitar like that. I had only seen him play bass.
I saw UM as well in Indy on Saturday. I won tickets through FAcebook. It started off kind of slow but quickly picked up. Once the sun went down and the lights came on, it was sick. It started to lightning and the band only took about a ten minute set break because they thought they would get shut down. They played Shine on you crazy diamond. Fantastic. Three song encore included Glory so I went home a happy camper. I missed Rusted Root opening but heard some from the gate and they sounded as good as ever.
The lightning reminded me of Phish last year. It was mostly hoizontal across the sky. I wish I had my camera with me because a few times, Jake was soloing and doing his pose when the lightning struck right behind him. It was beautiful.

Siren Fest on Coney Island this weekend was great. Matt and Kim put on a GREAT show and they were so happy to be there. The weather was beautiful and being on the ocean like that made it a really cool little fest.

just happened to be in Indy and didn't decide to go until last minute, blew some money i was saving for my upcoming Phish run. Totally worth it though. I was right up front stage left.

Last weekend I caught the end of the Summer Slaughter show in town here. 10 bands in eight hours on the main stage... the headliner only getting 45 minutes. That is quite a lot to try and cram in that space, perhaps they would have been better off cutting out a few bands.
I missed the first five bands entirely, caught the sixth with about 10 minutes left in their set, then saw the last four entirely (Red Chord, All Shall Perish, The Faceless, and Decapitated.) The promotional ads were right about it being brutal. Wasn't going anywhere near that moshpit.

if you look i'm sure you'd see that nothing's really as it seems and soon enough you'd realize you promise more than you'll provide the substance that we're hoping for will always leave us needing more we're calloused til we cannot feel the only moments that were real
I saw grace potter and the nocturnals the other night in NYC. It was an invite-only free show that i was lucky enough to get tickets to. It was a beautiful night and it was outside in Bryant Park, and it was also being taped for the PBS series "Live from the Artists Den." I've seen them a few times now, but this is the best i've seen them yet. They were incredibly tight and Grace's voice was spot on. I was unable to find anyone to come with me, but I had an absolute blast by myself. I can't wait till they come around again, and i really hope they decide to play Roo again this year. If you enjoy great music and you haven't seen them or listened to them, I seriously recommend checking them out.
^^I just saw them last night and they were awesome! I'd never seen them before, and I was pretty blown away. I dunno, going in I was kind of expecting a mellow, sit-down set more in line with a lot of their recorded stuff, but they had so much energy.
They were opening for My Morning Jacket, who were amazing, of course. This was far and away the most intimate performance I've seen them do - there couldn't have been much more than 1,000 people there last night, certainly well below 1,500. I was right up front, just left of center and less than 10 feet from the stage. There was no fence between the audience and the stage, oddly enough - that was one of the first times I've seen that for a band that big.
Here's the setlist:
1. Steam Engine 2. Rollin Back (intro) 3. The Way That He Sings 4. Gideon 5. Anytime 6. Mahgeetah 7. Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.1 8. Circuital 9. Golden 10. Tonite I'm Gonna Celebrate With You 11. Where To Begin 12. Lowdown 13. Honest Man 14. I'm Amazed 15. Easy Morning Rebel 16. Wonderful (The Way I Feel) 17. I Think I'm Going To Hell 18. Smokin From Shootin 19. (end of) Run Thru 20. Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.2 21. (end of) Lay Low ---------- 22. Bermuda Highway 23. Wordless Chorus 24. Highly Suspicious 25. Off The Record 26. One Big Holiday
And already I can't wait to see them again.
EDIT: I could say some less than nice things about the venue, though. It makes absolutely no sense to not provide an ATM, not accept credit cards and not allow re-entry. I was going to buy a couple beers, some dinner and maybe a t-shirt, but apparently you don't want my business because you think I'm going to go off and nom massive amounts of corn in the parking lot or sneak in a couple friends

Saw Flying Lotus on Friday night. He was okay, interesting stuff but by no means amazing. I can think of many, many dj's/ electronic artists I have seen over the past 10-12 years who were far better.

It was a really short set as well which was a little disappointing. What I will say is, he was a hell of a lot better than those two poor excuses who opened for him

They were really bad most of the time, with some good moments. But yea they had a lot of problems with beat matching.
I still had a great time at FlyLo but it seemed like he played less of his own stuff. The Coachella set was absolutely insane compared to this one. Don't know what happened.

i'm seeing Thievery Corporation and STS9 at Red Rocks this weekend. If Thievery's set is half as good as their Bonnaroo set i'll be a happy guy. I'm also catching a DJ set aftershow, really eager to see what that's all about.

Saw Crystal Castles last night at a tiny sold out venue that clearly reached over capacity. It was a hot, crowded, sweaty good time.
They sounded like garbage live, as always. Something doesn't quite work. The bass kicks overpower the 8-bit synths and live drums. I think Alice has improved as a vocalist slightly since the last time I saw them (but not by much). And the vocals levels were frequently off, too high or too low.
This sounds like a scathing bad review, but all that being said, it was an amazing show. Something about Alice's stage presence is just awe-inspiring to me. There was quite a bit of crowd surfing and the energy in that place was off the charts. Everyone was jumping and dancing and I've never seen so much pushing and moshing at an electronic music show. It was a great time, and horrible sound or not, I'd pay to see them again in a heart-beat
Saw Ghostland Observatory last week at the House of Blues. A little short - about an hour ten/fifteen - particularly since tickets came out to around $45 apiece. Unfortunately, it was a Wednesday night, but they played with a lot of energy, got the crowd into it and ended the set with a song from the new album. And the lasers were amazing of course.
Hope to see them on the lineup for 2011, especially in a late night slot.

Ouch. That's a rough price. They put on a great show but usually only 90 minutes or so.
Avett Brothers at House of Blues a couple of weeks ago, highest energy I've ever seen with this band. Bras being thrown on stage, stage diving, etc. Insane.
Also caught Michael Franti and Spearhead, excellent show. They didn't have an opening act so MF and a couple of members of the band came out and played 4 or 5 songs, acoustic. Then the DJ kicked in for a little while and then the show. Basically he opened for himself.
Has anyone seen Phoenix in a small setting? They're playing with Wavves next month and I'm trying to justify spending even more on concerts.

Thanks, good to know. I have front row at the Ryman and the man is in so much trouble. Because I WUV him.
How hard is it to crawl up on stage? I need to practice. Going to wait until the end of the show, so that when they evict me I won't miss anything.
