I made an impulse decision last week and bought a ticket to see Freddie Gibbs. It was lit, I didn't make it in time to see any of his openers though. He played all the songs I wanted to hear, my only complaint was that he played exactly an hour, was hoping for a little bit more but it was a rap show so I shouldn't have expected anything longer. Also, Fuck The Police.
Last weekend I also went to Mamby on the Beach. I didn't really stay at any act longer than half an hour, did a lot of wandering around between Thundercat, Lee Foss, MK, STRFKR, Mutemath, and Klingande. All of them were pretty interesting, but nothing that made me want to try and get really invested in their set. Plus I went to the Chicago Pride Parade earlier and didn't have as much energy as normal after that. However, I did get close and stay for all of Todd Terje. The new songs sounded great live, and the old ones were just as fun as I remember. My girlfriend thought it was so cute how smiley I was because he was the only act I was invested in. Wish I got to see Cut Copy too, but not mad at my decision at all. At the end of the night we went to see Green Velvet for a bit since Flying Lotus had delays, and stayed for the first half of Flying Lotus who I've never seen before. He kept ranging from really good to really WTF, so it was hard to stay interested in his set for me, but I understand why people love him. It was colder than anticipated so we left early, don't know how he finished off. Really fun weekend overall.
Finally crossed my #1 off my bucketlist with King Crimson in Denver last Saturday. Amazing show at a half sold venue.
Fucking right. I don't know anything after Thrak. I didn't follow any of the Deconstruktion (sp?) albums or really anything else they've done after Thrak. I'm going to have to go look at the setlist.

That's fire as fuck man. 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and shit I don't know presumably later stuff. How was the 4 drummer ensemble?
fuck thats good. ugh. im going to be really sad if they dont extend the tour.
Saw Dianna Ross at Essence Festival tonight, show was amazing. She is 73 and sounded an looked incredible. Def a contender for show of the year. Essence had amazing production, as I figured they would after seeing Prince there in 2014.
John Legend opened and was really good, better than I remember him at Hangout 2010 headlining but I wasn't really paying attention to that set. India Arie (sp?) opened before them. She was really good, I had never heard of her though. Seemed like an Erykah Badu ripoff when I saw her come out, ha.
As for the King Crimson drummer question, they moved it down to three and as a drummer, I have to say it was incredible and the perfect way to experience them for the first time.
Awesome man. You made me look up that setlust and it was great. I looked for some on line but no luck as of early last week. I'm sure that eventually some footage will get out. As for India, she's only a few years younger than Erykah (sp?), but for once in a long time, there is a yes answer to, "Wasn't that chick with Motown?".

Long time off the grid. We've been to a lot of shows since I last posted, last Friday in Indy The Revivalists rocked as usual with Robert Randolph and Marcus King. All 3 are worth the price of a ticket . Returned from Mountain Jam before that , June 16-18th. 1st time at this Festival and it was F--ing Great, it's in the Catskill Mountains in NY. Loved the venue, ski lodge turned into a great place for a festival in the summer. String Cheese was probably my favorite show, but state of mind does that. Tom Petty Was good, But as usual it's the supporting bands that make a great festival, Michael Franti, Saint Paul and The Broken bones, Gary Clark and a great set from Peter Frampton were highlights. Most importantly the sound for every band was F---ing great, and no one disappointed. Highly recommend this Fest. I will be returning, and next year spending 7-10 days to checkout more in the area. Fished each morning, and we caught a lot of Trout. next up Forecastle in Louisville. Still thinking about Voodoo in the fall, I'll let you know if I'm in town for that. Have A GREAT 4TH, Peace Love and Happiness to all.
Last night I went to my first concert of second half of 2017. Arca & Jesse Kanda's live show with opener Total Freedom at Brooklyn Steeler.
Total Freedom's DJ set was very entertaining and fun, honestly had no idea what to expect but it turned out great. He played from 8 to 9 PM, non-stop.
At about 9:10, Arca and Jesse Kanda showed up. He started the set with some loud and bass-heavy noises, almost felt like drone-y sometimes. After that, he started singing from his latest self-titled album with some AV from Jesse Kanda in the back. In addition to the stage, there was a podium extending to the middle section of the venue, where he spent most of his time. There was a lot of theatricality and he changed 3 or 4 costumes throughout the show. (And some very disturbing images on the screen once in a while). It was impressive.
I was tempted to go to the aftershow with Arca and Total Freedom DJing at House of Yes, but was a little tired and ended up heading home.
I don't know if his upcoming performances at Pitchfork and FYF are live or not, but regardless, try to fit his show into your schedules. You won't regret.
Metallica at Suntrust Park in ATL on Sunday. Show was AWESOME. Put a few pics on my instagram @jostpack.
The venue did a good job with getting people in (zero lines) and traffic. Had floor tickets and the sound was incredible. Good production, big ass screens behind the band, pyro, fireworks, etc. Good setlist, the new songs sounded great, plenty of old stuff too.
They played "Battery" which is one of my favorites of all time. This was my third time seeing Metallica but the first time for my wife, and the first CD she owned was "Master of Puppets", so this was a big deal for her. We had a blast.
As usual metal crowds are my favorite. Super friendly. Avenged 7x opened. I'm not a fan but I admit they put on a good show and whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Mixmaster Mike spun while they were setting up for Metallica, it was a cool set but unfortunately they had his levels set at house music level instead of performer level.
Anyway Metallica rocks, everyone should see them at least once, it's a spectacle and makes you feel good.

Day for Night got the full birth of a goat multiple times it seemed like, easily beat out the surgery footage from Butthole Surfers.
but still, that was easily the 2nd best set of that weekend, if you get a chance go.

Yeah, I think there were way much disturbing images than D4N at the very end of Brooklyn show, which I think I should not even mention here. (If anyone is still interested, just look at the last paragraph of this article.)

You think? I know his pedigree and some of the production work with Bjork. I think I understood it for what it was, but I wasn't a big fan. It was too dancey-pop-Latin-dramatic or whatever. I had it Bjork VR, Tycho and Welcome to Houston (and maybe RZA) were my favorite sets. Asterisk goes to Aphex Twin because everyone I was with was freezing and wanted to go inside. Psh
Idk about second-best necessarily, but Arca was one of my favorites at DFN, as well. It was up there with Aphex, Squarepusher, Tycho and Kamasi (which probably would have been the best had it not been half a set).
I'm at a free House of Vans show. I can definitely say that Downtown Boys is the shiz. Next is Sheer Mag, and then Kelly Lee Owens in another venue.
Edit: I can confirm Sheer Mag was super fun as well. (I was also a bit drunk, but whatever.) I didn't wait for Royal Headache and went to another venue for Kelly Lee Owens. An electronic musician called "Via App" was the opener for KLO, and her set was amazing, will check her album soon. After the first song of KLO, there were some technical issues, and I dunno why, but they couldn't fix it for almost half an hour. I got a bit annoyed and left. I'll try to catch her set at FYF.

I was so close to buying tickets for their upcoming NYC show from Stubhub, just for $54. I thought I should wait because it would drop further, but no, the cheapest is $81 now. #fml
Roger Waters in NOLA last weekend was amazing. The political stuff was annoying but it was fun seeing people get butthurt about it. Guess they never listened to the lyrics on Animals. lolz
Seeing him with my Dad was pretty special, PF is his all time fav band by far.
Waiting in Priests show to get started. One of the guys from the venue brought up Folk Implosion while setting things up. Good sign for the night.
Priests were pretty great. They played about 45 and hit multiple songs from releases previous to Nothing Feels Natural which was nice. Both openers were local bands. I liked Caps more out of the two. I would link something of theirs, but it appears they don't really have a social media presence as of yet.
Fun fact: some of the singer's family are from Tennessee. Her aunt and cousin were actually at the show last night.

Waters was always hardcore anti-corporate/anti-capitalist pig. A bunch of one of my kid's friends called it the top show they've ever seen. I also laugh about the butthurt of the Trump followers. Like come on assholes, what did you think he was going to do, not be political? Did you never listen to the lyrics beyond "bullshit" in Money? Stupid mfers.

I saw Kelly Lee Owens last month at a festival. Dug her music, but she played below her set length and thought she ended just after establishing a nice groove. Worth keeping an eye on for the future though.

I'm not sure why I have doubted tedeschi trucks band, but for the longest time I've known about them but never really given them a good listen. I saw them for the first time last night and I was blown away! A full band of first class musicians. Finally seeing Hot Tuna was great too. It's been a long time coming for that.

Tedeschi Trucks is one of those acts that the records don't do them justice. Great live performers.

If you're considering buying a ticket for one of the Phantogram/Tycho shows, do it. Wasn't sure how Tycho would work being outdoor in the daylight, they def pulled it off though. Phantogram was everything I thought it would be, plus more. Love Sarah Barthel.

DJ Shadow was extremely good last night. He mixed everything live, did his own scratching and live drumming on some tracks. Visuals were awesome and evolved throughout the show. Played several from Endtroducing and his new one. Six Days sounded great. I really have no complaints.
Main set was 1.5 hours and I think he came back out for an encore but I had to bail to be at work at 6 this morning and it was already midnight. But he was extremely humble and gracious, talked to the crowd multiple times. Really an impressive show.
He's in Nashville next Friday, make it happen if you can.

yeah the fly-lo esque front sheet 3d thing was tight, (looked like it was some leftover visuals from the shadowsphere, but that thing was fire so no problem there), and he was DEFINITELY humble and gracious. Almost to the point where you could maybe think it was a farewell tour, but he's probably just blown away that people still want to watch him live scratch 20 years into his career.
