Wanted to post this note from a friend for any Wilco fans out there. He's doing the residency/five-nighter in Chicago:
Here's a list of the songs Wilco played last night:
1. ELT 2. A Shot in the Arm 3. Side with the Seeds 4. You Are My Face 5. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart 6. Pot Kettle Black 7. At Least That's What You Said 8. What's the World Got In Store (Pat Sansone on non-ironic banjo) 9. When the Roses Bloom Again (fr. the Chelsea Walls soundtrack) 10. Airline to Heaven 11. Ashes of American Flags 12. Either Way 13. Jesus, Etc. 14. Too Far Apart 15. Can't Stand It 16. Sunken Treasure 17. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Intermission (15 minutes)
18. Misunderstood 19. Far, Far Away 20. Why Would You Wanna Live? 21. Impossible Germany 22. Sky Blue Sky 23. Please Be Patient with Me 24. Cars Can't Escape 25. Hummingbird
Encore: 26. Hate It Here 27. Walken 28. I'm the Man Who Loves You 29. Heavy Metal Drummer 30. Candyfloss 31. Outtasite (Outta Mind)
Holy sh*te, I've never seen them do so much material in one show. They started at 8:30 and went until 11:20 with just the 15 minute intermission and less than 5 minutes between the second set and the encore. It didn't seem like they pulled out too many rarities at this show and I expect tonight's set will stay pretty much within the recent Wilco set list canon, too. I'm expecting more deep cuts at the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday shows.

Great show. When I saw em in Asheville a few years ago they played Being There pretty much straight thru with a few from YHF and Kidsmoke. This sounds like a great show.

I was right up front in the pit area for Wilco at roo last year. They were amazing. Definitely my Sunday highlight. That set is incredible though, I can't believe they played 31 songs in just under three hours.

They do rock live. For those of you who aren't from the Chicago area...Wilco are playing five nights with one break in the same venue. Tonight is #2. Their aim is to play the entire catalogue or damned close. It has been fun thus far.

Last night's Wilco show featured one of the rarest of concert moments: the true encore. As we all know, most bands plan on doing their encore in advance and know exactly what they're going to play on any given night.
After the band had played a killer 30 song set (with a 15 minute intermission), Jeff Tweedy said goodnight and he meant it. The post-show music came up, the house lights were turned on, the roadies switched off the amplifiers and no one budged. The audience was quite literally demanding an encore. Cheering loudly, clapping in rhythm with the post-show music ("Peaches" by POTUSA?!?!) and not going ANYWHERE. The post-show music was turned up a notch or two, MORE house lights came on, Tweedy's wife left her box seat and the backdrop curtain was raised so the roadies could begin to bring out the tarp to cover the equipment. No one was taking the hint. Suddenly, Sue Miller re-appears in her box, the backdrop goes back down, the lights get turned back off and the band reappears to launch into "ELT" and finish up with an impromptu "Hoodoo Voodoo" (with Tweedy taking a moment to jokingly complain that the equilibrium of the residency was being thrown off).
All in all, it was a remarkable show that was even better than the night before. Highlights included Andrew Bird sitting in on fiddle for 8 songs, the first ever live performance of "Dash 7" by the band and John Stirratt crooning his lone Wilco song, "It's Just That Simple" (with Tweedy on bass!) and receiving a thunderous ovation afterwards. People would not stop cheering until he gave a humble wave to acknowledge his shining moment.

I love the way this show started out very mellow with a bunch of songs that rarely get played. Now that we're more than halfway through the residency, there are only three songs from each of the first five Wilco albums left to be performed. There are still five tunes from Sky Blue Sky that remain unplayed and nine of the fourteen Mermaid Avenue selections are still waiting for their moment. Only a few songs from various EPs, B-sides and compilations have seen the light of day. If they manage to fit in "Another Man's Done Gone" (Mermaid Vol. 1) and "One True Vine" (Sky Blue Sky EP), I'll be 100% content.
I'm a big Wilco fan, and lucked into some great seats for their show in Mobile on March 3rd. Can't. Fuckin. Wait.
Oh, and kingofcheezwiz, their set at Roo this year was a great one. You could Tell Tweedy was into it, which makes all the difference between an ok show, and a wonderful one.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
"In more than a decade of making music, Wilco has weathered a tumultuous label change, infighting and lineup changes, drug addiction and depression and emerged as one of the most innovative, influential and widely revered bands making music today. Hear the group perform a full concert, webcast live on NPR.org from Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club on Wednesday, Feb. 27 beginning at approximately 9 p.m. ET."
When he's talking between Jesus Etc. and Hate It Here...he's talking to me about Red Velvet! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
moment of the night, by a mile! i couldn't help but think that tweedy, much like his fans, doesn't "get" RV. regardless, she didn't go unnoticed ;D
both shows were fantastic. first night we enjoyed from the balcony, and last night we were right up front. nice having the varying perspectives. although i still haven't heard "how to fight loneliness," i got to hear a lot of songs hadn't before. super cool.
ooh goodness. getting so excited for their show on march 7th in houston. and, if you guys didn't already know...they're the musical guest on snl this saturday...
