Let me begin w/ a big fat "NO" for so many reasons, most having to do with that ego which I don't belive they could check at the gates. It would be a Sting fiasco x10. They would HAVE to headline. They would play for 70 mins. They would drive up ticket prices. They would get preechy. They just might.....gulp......ruin Bonnaroo...... Plus I just can't stand most of their music. I won't say they suck, but they are absolutly wrong for bonnaroo.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

I agree with mighty stallion... They have semed egotistic over the years, ...
Worse than Sting "Whats up 80, 000 Manchesterians!! Where the hell are we anyway, 'Edge'?"
Talk about Tool trying to say cameras were banned! Wait till U2 is booked. Im all for diversity at roo, but "Welcome to teenie bopper land"...what a draw there
I am a U2 fan. I have most of their albums and have even seen them in concert. With that said, I don't think they should play Bonnaroo unless we could time warp back to 1987.

The preachy might be right, and the tix are going to be more expensive anyways, but there's no way Bono would be more irritating than Sting was, and U2 is without a doubt a much better live band now than the Police were/are.
The 70 minutes thing is way wrong. On their most recent tour they were playing 22+ songs, playing around (over?) two hours
Probably not a Bonnaroo band, but they put more into their live show than Tool or the Police
man i hope not. they are like the police. i like some of their tunes but in the end it would likely be another boring, poorly done, expensive waste of a headliner spot.

Bono needs to go where the streets have no name.
^^^^^^^ loved this choice! LOL ;D
I've never been a fan of U2, and I don't want them @ roo. They are definitely a band that would only be there as a headliner. A while back there was a thread asking if any bands were too big for Bonnaroo, U2 might be too big. I think at the time I said I wouldn't care if they were there, I'd have to retract that, cause I do care and don't want them there at all.
In my experience, almost every person I've met who says they hate U2 actually just hates U2 disciples (note I didn't use the word fans). U2's actual production is pretty impressive and high quality, and their performances have consistently excellent responses.
BUT I'm not really for seeing them at Bonnaroo. I have no doubt that I would go to their set and enjoy it. I don't think they'd drive ticket prices up or bring in a bunch of unwanted fans. There are just other acts I think fit better with Bonnaroo than U2 who haven't played yet (R.E.M. and Pearl Jam immediately come to mind).
Throw U2 in the group of headliner level acts that I don't think fit at Bonnaroo (along with Green Day, RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins).

Me neither, I like some of their older stuff, but they have not put anything out worth a damn in many many many years. I just cant stand Bono and their whole pop persona. There are many other acts out there that deserve to headline before they do.
I would give my left pinky toe to see U2. I've loved Bono (ego aside) and his voice since 1983 and after all these years I still think The Edge is one of the best guitarists out there, period. Larry is delicious... grrrrrrr... and well, Adam's a really groovy dude.
but it's not what I go to Bonnaroo for.
If we could go back in time to the "Boy" or "War" U2... thaaat's what I come to Bonnaroo for
Well, I don't like any of their material after the 90's. But pretty much everything from Achtung Baby and earlier are fine fine recordings. Live at Bonnaroo? Probably not, unless the ego can at least be scaled down a bit, if not left at the gates.

If this were really the case, there are very few headlining acts that can play Bonnaroo. And the idea that Bono is more egotistical than Sting is frankly ridiculous. Bono wears shades and champions political causes. Sting left the most popular band in the world to play boring world music, star in movies and do Mercedes Benz ads.
John Lennon often compared himself to Jesus. Jim Morrison's world revolved around Jim Morrison. Pink Floyd wrote rock operas to themselves. Rock stars ARE egotistical.
Besides, the last two major tours U2 has made has featured a stripped down stage show with best of, crowdpleasing playlists. And unlike Tool, Bono interacts with the crowd. And unlike the Police, U2's playing together because they like to not because it's one last pay day...
Sorry for the tirade. I'm not really a U2 fan, but like I said before, I find most criticism of their stuff to be based on personal bias and misperception, and not, you know, reality.

Yes, very well said. Although, to play Devil's advocate, Bono did once insist on a second plane ticket so his hatbox could fly first class.

Hell yeah. I don't think Bono would be down anyway. He's got an appointment helping African children, followed by another appointment to tell the world about it.
At a recent U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, asked the audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."
A voice with a broad Scottish accent from the front of the crowd pierced the quiet . . .
"Well, foockin stop doin it then, ya evil basturd!"
i voted i could go with or w/o them. i wouldn't mind either way. but i love the choice of Bono needs to go where the streets have no name. i think thats hilarious.
i'm not a huge fan of U2 but, id go see them if they were at bonnaroo. i just feel like there are better bands that fit bonnaroo other than them. i wouldn't go as far as to say they'd ruin roo.
i dunno, maybe i could go w/o them because Bono pisses me off. My friend always likes to tell people this... "At a U2 concert in Glasgow, Bono asked the audience for some quiet. Then in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone 'Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies' A voice from near the front pierced the silence 'Well, stop f**king doing it then.'" I laugh every time.
**Edit: My bad Mojo, didn't realize you already told the Glasgow story.
