Have you tried GiMP? It's free, and very good. There are tutorials here, here, and here. I hope it's what you're looking for!
i will give it a shot...thanks alot man.
No problem. I love that program (and most open source alternatives), and they're all about sharing. This tutorial will teach you how to use their interface really well. I learned that and I started doing some fun things.
I did this Mars Volta wallpaper about two years ago when I first started using GiMP. I have always been fond of it.
I stopped using that program for a while, and recently picked it up again and re familiarized myself with it. I did this as a test to see if I could take the swastikas (that were originally black) and match the white of the stripes, size them the same as the stars, and place them in the correct spots.
Please note that that image is merely art. I am not attempting to mock or in any other way denigrate the suffering of Jews. I am merely attempting to make a statement at the similarities between Hilter's rise in Nazi Germany and the current near police state we live in. If it offends anyone horribly, please let me know and I will remove the image.

I used GiMP a lot when I was in a band. I would make all the fliers for our shows with it, I designed our EP cover with it, and our T-Shirt. Some of them I worked a lot harder on than others (as is somewhat evident).
This is the cover art for my old bands EP. It too was made in GiMP.
