wouldn't calling someone an idiot kind of be the same thing?
"Idiot" originally referred to a "layman, person lacking professional skill", "person so mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning". (from wikipedia)
id·i·ot –noun (from dictionary.com) 1. an utterly foolish or senseless person. 2. Psychology. a person of the lowest order in a former classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25.
so as long as it's playful, i have no problem with name calling. when people insert malice and hateful tones into their speech along with other types of violence, that's when i get upset. you can call me anything you want to. i would make a list.... but i know alot of it would be offensive to many others.
well what do you call someone who is talking on their cellphone, driving without their lights on in the rain, 15 miles over the speed limit and cuts you off in heavy traffic?!
we can all blame Beavis and Butthead for this. remember when it was not ok to say "SUCK"? like, "that sucks"... i remember when that show came out and my parents would ground the crap out of me for saying that. It doesn't make much sense now, but that's the way it went.
elusiveboz, I was simply saying that I believe the context of a word is far more important than the word itself. By misinterpreting my example of the N-Word (to paraphrase I was saying that I don't think people should use the word and that people have every right to be offended by it, but that Bob Dylan used it in a context that is widely considered acceptable, backing up my point about context) you have apparently somehow fallen under the mistaken impression that I'm a bigot. And you used the phrase "southern baptist" to describe that. I'm sure a lot of southern baptists would be offended by that. How is it offensive to call someone you find stupid 'retarded' because it implies that mentally retarded people are stupid, but it's okay to call someone you think is a bigot a 'southern baptist' even though it implies that all southern baptists are bigots? Like you said, can't have it both ways brother. For the record, I'm not a southern baptist.
I don't use words like the N-Word or others that offend the vast majority of people (myself included), but I'm not going to censor my use of every word that might offend SOMEBODY. A lot of people are offended by the F-Word, but I'm sure as F not going to stop saying it.
