Umph was the highlight of my Friday daytime. They rocked the Which Stage and jammed the hell outta the Sonic Stage later that night for almost an hour before doing some autographs. (which was awesome btw, I never thought I'd get the whole band to autograph my t-shirt!!!)
This set was awesome. I saw them at the sonic stage too.
"Sure! give us a Friday afternoon set. no problem. We'll just rock your faces off!"
I love these guys.
I was at both as well, rocked it. Got a bandana signed by them too, that was pretty sweet. I hadn't ever heard Wizard Burial Ground since i haven't had the internet for a while, and it was fricken awesome! Perfect for the weekend, hopefully they play it when i see them next month. Brought someone to this show who hadn't seen them, or even heard i think, and they were pretty amazed by it.
Yes. This show was fantastic. I got about 10 rows back, and it was just amazing watching the guys direct the jams.
i read an article about that not long ago, i think that's really impressive how they orchestrate their jams in a way...
like if brendan points up, they all speed up a certain amount.... etc. etc.
i watched for it last friday and noticed it quite a bit... awesome!
PT has an in depth explanation of Jimmy Stewart, and Umphrey's actually just released a compilation of their favorites from 07'. I was lucky enough to be at the Bridgeless in Columbus, OH. That was a great show.
Never heard them before seeing them at roo this year. Loved them. I made may wonderful discoveries at roo.
I came here to say exactly that. I went in with no expectations, had heard of them but never heard them. I expected your regular noodly jam band. My face is still completely melted off. They were fantastic.

Hmmm. Well, my friend today invited me to see Umphrey's McGee in Burlington next month, for a two-night show. I don't really know anything about them, actually. They have no MySpace or PureVolume, the Wikipedia entry gives more of a general history of the band, instead of talking about their sound.... none of my friends - barring this guy and of course, many of my beloved Inforoo friends - listen to them, so I've never really heard their stuff before. I searched YouTube for some videos. All the individual members seem to be pretty good musicians. Jam band of sorts, I listened to a couple of their songs in the weeks and months before Bonnaroo, but I skipped their set at the farm for Minus the Bear, and have kind of forgotten about them. So, I might go, I might not... it's pretty far away. I mean, I like Umphrey's, I wouldn't say I love 'em, but they're pretty decent. I do, however, love live music.
It's not a ridiculously long trip (4 hours), but quite far for just a concert, especially when I barely know the band playing (of course, I said that for Porcupine Tree ). So, what do I have to look forward to? Besides, y'know, face-melting and the like. So he said it was $35 for two nights or $20 for one night. I told him I'd think about it, depending on my work schedule, how much money I had, etc.

Their roo show was sweet, especially since i'd never heard WBG, but it was sloppy for an Umph show. I saw them again a month after roo and they played a much tighter show. Will being seeing them at least once again in Nov. Jack, go see them, if they're doing a two night stand chances are they will be sweet shows. If Phish would be a modern day Grateful Dead Umphrey's would be a modern day Frank Zappa.
They play plunger a lot. A newer, and awesome, song. And my favorite song of theirs since I first heard them. One of their mellower songs.
You can find a lot of high quality shows of theirs on archives. If those videos don't interest you, that's pretty much their range of music.
Over the past year UM has become my favorite band. Ive seen them 6 times this year and i still have a 3 night run in NYC in October. The more you get into them the more you realize how good they are. Scary thing is they keep getting better and they have a new CD coming out in early 2009 with completely new material. talk about exciting
I'd never really listen to ump much, then this year while wandering around under the influence I was drawn into their show and couldn't leave. It was like the pied piper playing. Since this summer I haven't been able to stop listenin to em. Anchor Drops is tha shiiiiiaaaattttt

If anyone is a WBG fan check out their 9.12 show. Played it as an encore and it was filthy. Wasn't at the show, but its the best WBG I've heard. Now that i'm moving i probably won't be able to catch Umphrey's anywhere on this tour, where I was gonna see them 3 times living Richmond. Oh well, I'm sure next tour they will hit all major OH citys.
Edit: Actually, thats an awesome show all together. Holler at me if anyone wants it.
I saw UM in July with STS9 and it was the best show that I saw last summer. They really are some of the best musicians around and their ability to coherently jam is second to none.
I gotta say, I've seen umphreys like 10 or 11 times and the last 3 shows I saw (dec 06, campbisco 07, roseland 08) really turned me off of the band prob the last umph show I enjoyed was central park 06, way to much shredfest for my tastes in the past 2 years. the roseland show I had to walk out I feel like they used to get into these really bluesy, psycadelic jams and now its just shred shred shred and it gets to be boring. who knows maybe I just need this break from them.

Its about 50/50 what show you get. They still do play that old style of show, but then you get some where its like Wappy/DBK/WBG and so on and so forth. But the show I mentioned has a pretty sweet throwback.
Set One Rocker (part II) > "Jimmy Stewart" > The Fussy Dutchman, Intentions Clear > Kabump > Example 1, Prowler > The Floor Set Two In the Kitchen, Phil's Farm > End of the Road > "Jimmy Stewart" > Phil's Farm, Out of Order, Divisions Encore Syncopated Strangers > Wizard Burial Ground
Old Umph fans would have a hard time arguing with the 2nd set imo.
im catching them 3 nights in nyc oct 14,15,16 along with catching their side project omega moos and tDB side project electron together on sunday night the 12th in new haven.
