So I'm going to Bonnaroo for the first time with my buddy. He's been a few times and has become quite festive in recent years. He plans his vacations around festivals like I plan mine around fishing trips. He always told me how cool roo was and that I would love it and that "it's so you".
Since work travel has granted enough miles to fly to the moon and back again getting to TN was no problem. How could I not go? Besides, all my vacations for the past few years have involved driving somewhere and fishing non-stop for a few days. Usually by myself. So why not do something different and social?
I thought that it was just a big music fest; lots of bands, people in varied mental states, folks walking around naked or otherwise attempting to recreate their impression of what Woodstock was supposed to be like.
I knew there was a ferris wheel and a fountain and figured there was some other weird stuff, but I had no idea....
Every time I read a new thread here I find some other wacky thing that I only half understand what it could be. The Silent Disco? Burlesque? Bonnerouque? I can't even think of all the strange crap I've read about here.
I must see these things.
What else is there that has nothing to do with music? What's the freakiest thing to see?
Will I actually have time to see the performances with all this bizzare activity to explore around me?
Seriously, what have I gotten myself into? I am starting to realize more and more that I have no idea what is about to happen. The suspense is killing me.
^^^^LMAO - the first year I went - we pulled into the Wal-mart parking lot and that was my first thought "What the hell am I getting into?"
It'll all be good - just pace yourself - think of it like Disneyworld - there is no way you can see or do it all - just one or two things you don't wanna miss and go with the flow about everything else

This is my second year....even after having one Bonnaroo under my belt I have the same feelings you are having. All I can say is pace yourself. Try to determine the "must see" acts you can't miss, then beyond that just let it happen. I promise that before the weekend is up you will have a new band or artist that becomes one of your favorites. You will have seen some craziness the likes of which you have never seen. Just realize that you have 4 days so don't sprint through the first day or two or you'll be hurting.
Definitely check out the packing lists on here. I was super prepared last year all because I heeded the advice given by veteran roo'sters.
I'm glad your going and so are the fish of the world. ENJOY!!!

My fourth year going. I've seen some weird stuff. Guys sitting on the ground kicking dirt with their heel for a half hour was kinda odd. But There's a lot of cool stuff they got. The silent disco is cool to watch either from inside or outside. The sonic forest (which isn't there anymore I believe) was fun to see.
Check out the art of such 'n' such, they blew me away after tool last year. Comedy tent is fun as well.
It's my fourth year and I've still never been in the comedy tent or the cinema. There's so much to do and see, keep that in mind when you are marking up your copy of the schedule.

^^^^
It's def nice to relax inbetween acts in the movie tent or comedy tent. both air conditioned and entertaining. Definitely worth checking out, even if only for a little while. I've slept in the movie tent just to keep cool and relax after being in centeroo.
my advice off topic advice: avoid the cinema tent during peak heat hours. you will have to wait in the hot sun for a long time and eventually when you come out of the tent the day will only seem hotter.
my on topic advice: while the big things around (ferris wheel, silent disco, art of such and such) are neat, the real strange and amazing things that you will see are the people around you.
Last year. I'm wondering around after midnight. There are these guys in asbestos suits melting iron in a huge forge. They would pour it into these molds that looked like pads for some giant sculpture. I watched for about an hour. Strange.
Definitely check out Shakedown (the REAL one...the Fakedown is ok..but the REAL one is worth finding! )....it's defintely an experience just to walk around and look.....
^There is a pond with a 300 pound catfish apparently you could have a go at that . I think you will be pleasantly surprised though Once you are in all your troubles will melt away for 4 days. It is the biggest party in the US and everyone there knows that, and just wants to share the experience with you.

Ooh! Oooh! Ooo! Noodling! Noodling! Noodling! Or grabbling as it's called in TN.
As I was told go and let loose! There is much to see and do, even in the camping areas!!! Wild stuff, shaking tents, things that we cannot speak of here. Have a great time. For me, it all started at Wally world and then went wild from there.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
Just walk around. Venture out into the camping areas, talk & meet people. While the line up is pretty damn cool, it's the entire vibe that keeps me coming back.
Go in to it with no pretenses and expect nothing but an awesome time.
it's just like anything else important in your life... as you are pulling through the gates, you get the butterflies in your tummy and want to jump around and dance like Hacksaw Jim Duggin
my suggestion is to see some bands thursday night and then go exploring... and just wander around for a while... see everything you can the first night... go get some rest and then the rest of the trip just let it flow... if you feel like the ferris wheel is calling your name during your favorite bands set, go ride the ferris wheel... if some random small stage act catches your ear, take a break underneath a small tent and have a listen.

Cool. ;D
Is there realy a pond?
Well a fenced off cow waller anyway I wouldn't put my feet in it much less my arms. There are good spots around though PM me and I will give you some starting points.

I camped next to a "pond" last year. It was so dry it looked like sludge puddle, not to mention i watched alot of guys piss in it. Best advice, avoid the water !
Another piece of advice is to stay away from those walls around centeroo. I know they look very tempting for shade when it is hot out however after dark many people who do not want to walk to and wait for a port-a-john use the area next to the wall instead.
^^ saw many people sit against those walls right before the Flaming Lips last year, only to come up with soggy bottoms. I tried warning them before they sat down, but they would look at me and think I was giving them bogus info and sit anyways. The worst one was this guy and his girl went to sit, and I told them not to and the guy looked at me like I was going to steal his girl and told her to sit and then he sat and they both stared at each other, then me and took off. I tried, I really really did.

now if you had said... MAN DON'T SIT THERE, I JUST SAW SPACE ALIENS TAKE A POOP WHILE SWORDFIGHTING... i might have ignored you and sat down...
but i probably would have asked why and given you some party favors for saving me from sitting in pee. the safest place to sit down is in the middle of any field there... never next to the walls!
what is not normal in the babylon is the norm at the roo! It's like alice's looking glass! oh yeah and heed warning of your fellow roosters!! It is wise as i have a great pics (somewhere) about 4 years ago with like 7 guys lined up beside the sall right behind the vendors at the which stage...all with no hands showing and feet just a couple steps apart.....icky icky boys!!
